was crowned the 43rd 

Miss Temple City Ambassador 

at the annual pageant Thursday 

June 2, sponsored by the 

Temple City Chamber of Commerce. 

Esther Wong, 16, was first 

runner-up, and Yan Chen, 16, 

was second runner-up. They 

also attend Temple City High 

School. The three young ladies 

will comprise the Miss Temple 

City Honor Court and attend 

various community functions 

during the 2011-2012 Chamber 

program year. 

The pageant was staged at 

the Parish Hall of St. Luke’s 

Catholic Church in Temple 

City, before an enthusiastic 

crowd of approximately 300.

Recreation Dept. is seeking donations 

for the second annual 

“I Love School Supply Drive.”

needy elementary school students 

kick off the upcoming

For generations, nothing represented quintessential 

all-American summer fun more than packing 

up the family and enjoying a movie at the 

drive-in. Most drive-in theaters are gone now, 

paved over with subdivisions or shopping centers, 

but there are still movies under the stars in 

Temple City. 

So come and enjoy Movies in the Park at 

Temple City’s Live Oak Park. Popcorn, candy and 

drinks are available for purchase. 

In keeping with the 2011 Hawaiian theme, the 

Parks and Recreation staff will be showing the 

“Sounds of Summer” Concert Series now performing 

The Performing Arts Pavilion set the stage for 

a parade of musical hits every Wednesday evening 

during the summer at Temple City Park, 9701 Las 

Tunas Drive. Concerts begin at 7 p.m., but we 

recommend you arrive at 6:15 p.m. to take part 

in pre-concert activities with Shape Up TC, raffles

Platinum Academy 

School is out and our parks 

are filled with kids and teens 

enjoying the beautiful weather 

and time off. 

However, for teens who are 

12th graders this Fall, they may 

already be thinking about and 

dreading college applications. 

With the college application 

evolving into a complex package, 

many teens tend to procrastinate. 

It is important for parents to 

talk with their teens, and help 

them get ready for the college 

application. Parents’ support 

during this stressful time is extremely 

valuable. Here are some 

tips for parents to help their 

teens. 

1. Review Your Teen’s Progress 

Many colleges, such as the 

UC and CSU campuses, recalculate 

the GPA based on 10th 

and 11th grades in A-G classes 

only. This UC/CSU GPA is typically 

higher than the GPA you 

see on report cards. Also, review 

your teen’s SAT or ACT results. 

2. Make a list 

It is a good idea to make a 

list of at least 10 colleges, and 

then after researching, decide 

which ones to apply to. 

3. Research

to plan for college applications 

The First United Methodist Church of Temple 

City offers the following opportunities for worship 

and fellowship in July. 

On July 3, the community is invited to join 

the First and Faith congregations for Sunday 

Morning Worship at 10 a.m. at the Temple City 

Park, next to the library. Lunch to follow. 

On July 10 through Sept. 4 Summer worship 

services will be at 9:30 a.m. For the month of August, 

the worship services will be celebrated in the 

Fireside Room instead of the Sanctuary. Whether 

a long-time resident or new to the community or 

just looking for a place to worship during the 

summer months, please feel invited. 

On Sept. 11, a Rally Sunday Worship Service 

will take place from 10 a.m. - 11 a.m. with a barbecue 

lunch from 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. The Rev. David 

Palmer and the congregation of First United

4. Get Organized 

Make a timeline with important 

deadlines. For example, 

SAT or ACT test dates and college 

application deadlines, like

5. Start Writing Now 

The personal statement is a 

challenging essay. It is important 

to get started early. The UC 

personal statement and the 

Common Application personal 

statement prompts are currently 

available online, so students 

can start now.

TCHS Class of 1966 reunion will be Oct. 22 

The 45th reunion for the Temple City High 

School Class of 1966 is set for Saturday, Oct. 22, 

at the Embassy Suites in Arcadia. Tentative plans 

call for a 6 p.m. gathering with hors d’oeuvres and 

drinks from the no-host bar as everyone gets reacquainted. 

The evening will include lots of chitchat, 

laughter and hugs. Dinner, dancing and 

more fun to follow. 

To make things more convenient for all, the 

class will be using the TCHS Alumni News site 

for the RSVPs, updates, payments, pictures and a 

way for everyone to get back in touch. The Web 

address is http://tchsalumni.org/. 

It is free to join so even those not able to attend 

the reunion may log on and register to check 

out the festivities and reach out to good friends. 

Once logged in members may click on Events near 

the upper right-hand corner, then choose Class 

of ’66 Reunion — the only one listed at the moment. 

It’s very new so there’s not much posted 

yet but it will grow as the time draws closer. 

Reunion planners have not set the final price 

for the night as yet but are doing all they can to 

keep the cost down and will announce the final 

amount as soon as possible. 

Of course, more people signing up early will 

result in lower fees. For those wishing to spend a 

night or two, there will be special group rates at 

the Embassy Suites with hopes of setting up a 

breakfast for Sunday morning. 

Class member Lani is looking into a combo or 

band for us and we need to find a reasonable photographer 

who will take both posed and candid 

shots that we can post on our site. 

Volunteers are needed to join the committee 

to handle decorations, picture name badges, light 

background music until the band starts, assistance 

at the sign-in table and whatever needs to be done 

to make the reunion memorable. 

Help is also needed from everyone by helping 

to find classmates. 

Those who have an e-mail address for someone 

from the class should forward it to contacts 

on the Web site. Everyone should do some searching 

to find more lost Rams & Rammettes. No one 

should be left out.

First United Methodist announces summer activities 

Methodist Church of Temple City extend an open 

invitation to the community to join in a new year 

of Christian fellowship and worship. Children of 

all ages are welcome. 

In June, July and August, the Pasadena District 

United Methodist Summer Camp is open 

for elementary, junior high and senior high students.

Bahooka: restaurant creates an illusion of island shipwreck 


Cross the threshold and become 

shipwrecked on a deserted 

island, or such is the illusion 

the crew at Bahooka created. 

It is more than an illusion; it 

is the inspiration and dreams of 

a group of people who have 

gathered all these castoffs so 

uniquely arranged to create an 

unusual atmosphere for your 

dining pleasure. 

A shack has been created for 

the guests, a place where you 

can enjoy delectable Polynesian 

ribs and exotic drinks. The ribs 

are marinated in a secret formula 

and slow baked in 

Polynesian ovens. 

Drinks are concocted from 

the nectar of the islands gods. 

Both food and drink are prepared 

fresh daily. The food and 

drinks will speak for themselves, 

but the surroundings 

may warrant some explanation. 

When the Bahooka was in 

the planning, the owners 

scanned the islands to gather 

much of the decor for the restaurant. 

Once a customer enters 

the Bahooka, they feel as if 

they’ve left the mainland. 

The structural bamboo in 

building has been imported 

from the Philippines and hand 

wrapped by the Bahooka natives.

free program for women 

who have completed treatment 

for breast cancer, and includes 

support, education, and exercise 

components, all in Mandarin. 

The program runs for six 

weeks, with two-hour sessions 

on Tuesday and Thursday evenings 

starting at 6 p.m. The first 

class begins on Tuesday, July 

5th. 

This free program: 

• is available to all breast cancer 

patients at least three weeks 

post-treatment, with no evidence 

of active cancer and with 

their physician’s approval

Make Your Own Music 

On Saturday, May 21, 65 members of the Advanced Orchestra and 

students in the Advanced Art class at Oak Avenue Intermediate 

School hosted 20 students with Down Syndrome and their families. 

The title of the workshop was “Make Your Own Music.” This 

event is part of the school’s “Giving Bach” program. Students made 

instruments and afterward performed together. Directing the workshop 

were teachers Richard Meyer with the orchestra and Michelle 

Lee with the art club.

TC Dodgers finish perfect Pony League season

The Temple City Pony 14U 

Dodgers team has just completed 

as perfect a season as a team can 

have. On Monday, June 6, Randy 

McCormick threw a no-hitter to 

beat SGV Pony 8-0. This no-hitter 

was the perfect way to cap off 

an unbelievable season by these 

boys, who finished undefeated, a 

perfect 24 – 0. 

Temple City Pony Dodgers 

faced 14 different tough teams 

from throughout the San Gabriel 

Valley during the season and the 

closest game was decided by 5 

runs. This talented group of boys 

worked very hard for this goal 

and they deserve all the accolades 

they receive. Once they knew 

they had won the league championship 

they could have “mailed 

it in” and not worked as hard to 

finish perfect. 

But these boys are special and 

they wanted the perfect season so 

they didn’t quit. To be around

Keeping military in our hearts and minds

The annual Blue Star summer 

barbecue for families and 

friends of Temple City’s men 

and women in the U.S. Armed 

Forces took place Friday, June 

3, hosted by the First Baptist 

Church of Temple City. The 

gymnasium and kitchen were 

decorated in red, white and blue 

with red roses and flowing 

candles that added a special 

touch for the patriotic dinner.

The featured speaker at the Blue Star gathering June 2 was Marine 

Gunnery Sgt. Brent Marston who gave an account of what life 

and work was like serving in the Marines. 

While serving in the Marines with 

VMM 162, the Golden Eagles and the 

second Osprey unit to be sent into Iraq, 

Sgt. Marston was stationed at Al Asad. 

The mission was to carry troops to

challenge with sandstorms and temperatures 

ranging from 85-139 degrees. 

In 2010, Sgt. Marston was on a small 

carrier that was headed for the Middle 

East. The first stop was Haiti, shortly after 

the earthquake, to offer assistance.

Sgt. Brent Marston 

After a few weeks he left Haiti for the Gulf of Aden. Life on the 

carrier was difficult. He worked 12-15 hours a day, seven days a 

week. He trained, maintained and was always ready. 

Sgt. Marston also gave information about the V22 Osprey. He 

had worked on this plane for 12 years. It has many advantages over 

some of the older aircraft. It is a vertical lift plane; it is much faster, 

more agile and has a much higher ceiling which keeps them out of 

range of ground fire. 

Sgt. Marston spoke about how grateful he and the others in his 

unit were for the support from home and the Blue Star Program. 

The many packages and mail meant a lot to them and lifted their 

moral, just to know that folks care.

San Gabriel Mission traces its history back to 1771 

Since its founding in 1771, San Gabriel Mission, 

located at 428 S. Mission Dr., San Gabriel, has been 

the cornerstone of the Catholic faith in the San Gabriel 

Valley and a gateway to El Pueblo de la Reina de Los 

Angeles. A thriving parish to this day, the Mission’s 

multi-ethnic community continues to be sent forth 

with compassion to witness to God’s loving and liberating 

presence. The old Mission church was built from 

1791 to 1805 of cut stone, brick, and mortar and is the 

oldest structure of its kind south of Monterey. From 

1987 to 1993, the structure was fully restored to repair 

damage from the 1987 Whittier earthquake. The retrofitting 

project netted the Mission the Los Angeles 

Conservancy Preservation Award in 1994.

Temple City Kiwanis Club honors 

outstanding TCUSD students

Each week, the Temple City Kiwanis Club 

recognizes outstanding students and their 

teachers from Cloverly, Emperor, Longden and 

the Dr. Doug Sears Learning Center. 

Kiwanis treats students and their teacher 

to lunch. Students receive a certificate, a letter 

for their parents, a bumper sticker, a gift certificate 

from The Hat restaurant and a photograph 

of them receiving their award. Their 

photo is also published in Temple City Life and 

displayed in the Temple City Unified School 

District lobby. 

The Temple City Kiwanis has been serving 

the community since 1939. Members are dedicated 

men and women who desire to make a 

difference in the quality of life for the youth of 

Longden Elementary School 

The Kiwanis Club of Temple City honored 

Aziel Delgado, Stephanie Shih and 

Julia Cheng, three outstanding students 

from Longden Elementary School on 

May 24. Attending with the students was 

Asst. Principal Robert Westgate. 

Aziel is 11 years old and in Ms. 

Jennings’ class. He enjoys reading and 

studying. Aziel said, “The best things 

about Longden are that you can wear 

anything appropriate for school, the fun 

projects, and books.” If he could change 

one thing, it would be to have a bigger 

house. Personal goals are to rebuild the 

Twin Towers, go to college, become good 

at Math, and have a good job. 

Stephanie is 11 years old and in Mrs. 

Korsavong-Yi’s class. She has a younger 

sister and enjoys drawing, singing, dancing, 

photography, swimming, and ice 

skating. Stephanie said, “The best things 

about Longden are the big campus, the

The Kiwanis Club of Temple City honored Jacob 

Legrand and Vivian Song, two outstanding students from 

Oak Avenue Intermediate School on May 31, 2011. Pictured 

with the proud students is 8 th grade teacher, Marta 

Bourjeili. 

Jacob is 13 years old and in Mr. Loyal Perry’s class. 

He has a brother and sister and enjoys art and playing 

baseball. Jacob said, “The best things about Oak Avenue 

are the Advanced Art classes taught by Ms. Lee, my 

friends, and Ms. Bourjeili, my English teacher.” If he could 

build one thing it would be a nice home for homeless 

people. Personal goals are to make varsity baseball next 

year at the high school, to achieve higher than a 3.5 GPA, 

and to become captain on his travel baseball team. 

Vivian is 14 years old and in Mr. Loyal Perry’s class. 

She has a younger brother and enjoys art, classical guitar, 

cross country, biking, classical literature, and movies. 

Vivian said, “The best things about Oak Avenue are 

the great teachers and staff, the visual arts department, 

and the environment.” The best thing that ever happened 

was becoming a part of leadership in the L.I.F.E. Club. 

She would like to start a worldwide campaign that 

spreads love and comfort to people who need assistance. 

Personal goals are to build a computer that can cure any 

type of disease or disability, to become a better person, 

to be a member of the Advanced Art class by her Freshmen 

year at TCHS, and she would love to travel the world 

for academic learning and experiences.

Julia is 12 years old and in Mr. 

Shahoian’s class. She has an older brother 

and sister and enjoys drawing, reading, 

playing the piano and cello, and volunteering. 

Julia said, “The best things about 

Longden are the Principal and Assistant 

Principal, all my teachers, and great 

friends.” Personal goals are to get the

TCHS Pep Team takes top awards 

Temple City High School’s 

Pep Team recently won five 

awards at the Sharp International 

State Championship 

competition at Knott’s Berry 

Farm. 

Under the direction of Advisor

Kyleen Hurtado and Daniel 

Huynh, the TCHS Cheer team 

won Second Place and a Showmanship 

Award. Pep Flags and 

Song both received First Place 

trophies in their division and 

earned the “State Champions” 

title.

awards,” said elated Pep advisor,
