S. UJAGAR SINGH GILL REMEMBERED<br />
AASA (Asian American Seniors Association) organized a<br />
memorial for departed Sardar Ujagar Singh Gill on January<br />
30 th , 2011 at Palatine Public Library to a house full of<br />
people. Sardar Gill was 87 years old when he passed away<br />
on Nov 28th, 2010. Sardar Gill was suffering from some age<br />
related and some chronic ailments but never complained, yet<br />
stayed in full Chardhi Kla. He wasn’t shy about discussing<br />
his health issues. Room was full of many prominent<br />
members of S<strong>ik</strong>h and non S<strong>ik</strong>h communities and all<br />
said,’they learned something from Sardar Gill”. Program<br />
started at 1:30 pm and lasted un till5pm when the library<br />
closed. Every one shared their memorable association with<br />
Sardar Gill. Program was presided over by Sardarni Surjit<br />
Kaur Gill, widow of Sardar Gill and Prof.Jaginder Singh<br />
Ramdev, President AASA. Program started with a moment<br />
of silence and Ardas by Sardarni Gill. Program was<br />
conducted by Thakar S Basati.<br />
Dr.Inderbir Singh Gill, elder son of Sardar Gill welcomed<br />
the audience, thanked AASA and gave short introduction<br />
about life of Sardar Gill. Sukhmel Singh Atwal, Ex-<br />
President Punjabi Cultural Society of Chicago spoke about<br />
the support of Gill family to Punjabi Culture. Matt Flamm,<br />
Lawyer and Executive Director of Palatine Township<br />
Democratic Organization spoke about interest of Sardar Gill<br />
to learn about the Democratic values of his adopted land.<br />
Mrs. Surinder Kaur Sangha, Ex Trustee of S<strong>ik</strong>h Religious<br />
Society spoke about the fearless and selfless interest of<br />
Sardar Gill to help improve respect of Senior Citizens in<br />
community. She also read a poem about the love and respect<br />
of senior citizens.Sardar Gill has openly supported the use<br />
of benches in Gurdwaras for the comfort of people who<br />
could not sit on floor cross legged due to health problems.<br />
He kept copy of a Hukamnama from Shri Akaltakhat Sahib<br />
allowing use of benches.<br />
Dr. Baldev Singh said, “Even though he knew Gill Sahib for<br />
a short period of time, yet he learned many valuable things<br />
about S<strong>ik</strong>hi from Sardar Gill.” S. Mat Singh Dhillon,<br />
member Constitution Implementation Committee S<strong>ik</strong>h<br />
Religious Society Chicago also read a poem and appreciated<br />
the efforts of involvement of Gill family in community<br />
affairs. Bob Wolfe, close friend of Prof. Jaginder Singh<br />
Ramdev said,” Every time he saw Mr.Gill, he was always<br />
smiling”. Jeff, colleague of Ms Mandeep K Gill, conveyed<br />
his condolences on behalf of her colleagues and wished the<br />
family well during these tough times.<br />
Prof.Jaginder Singh Ramdev requested Dr. Navdeep K<br />
Sandhu, Librarian at S<strong>ik</strong>h Religious Society Palatine, to say<br />
few words. She said, “Because she is Gill also, Sardar Gill<br />
always called her his daughter.” Sardar Gill wrote 3 books.<br />
Some one came to her library and read Sardar Gill<br />
“Evolution of Khalsa, Sufferings and Successes”. He<br />
wanted to meet the author Sardar Gill to express his<br />
