5 oz.... Sgt. Maloney on annual furlough
fled the 96 degree temperatures for the more
comfortable 36 degree temperature of Door
County, Wisconsin. After being chipped from
a block of ice, he exclaimed, the swimming
was fine ... Ptlmn. Tetzlaff, O'Donnell and
Aitken are attending the pre·service detective
school ... Sgt. Raymond Skawski is attend·
ing the Police Administration Program at
Northwestern University ... Our sincere
sympathy is extended to Ptlmn. William Dever
on the death of his brother, Hugh. To Ptlmn.
John Rotchford on the loss of his beloved
mother, Mrs. Margaret Rotchford. To Detective
Charles Scalia on the death of his
brother, John. To Ptlmn. Ray Switalski on the
death of his sister, Mrs. Blanche O'Gurek . ..
Head Janitor Denny Quill has returned to his
labors after a sojourn in the hospital and a
convalescence at home ... lieutenant
Bernard Jones and Ptlmn. Frank Naperalski
recently retired. We hope they may enjoy,
for many healthy years, the fruits of their
labors.

lOth District: The welcome mat has been
rolled out to our new Commander, James
Holzman, who has taken command on the
24th of August. All the men of the 10th District
welcome to our ranks such a dedicated
policeman and able administrator ... Our
deepest sympathies go out to Ptlmn. John
McNeely, Harry Zientek and Sgt. Don Grames
on the loss of their dads . .. If you noticed
the smile on Clerk Margaret Kenny's face
lately, it's because her daughter Mary Ann
was finally married on the 1st of August. We
are only teasing, Margaret. Good luck to the

Moses Zepeda and the missus on the arrival of
a baby boy who weighed in at 7 Ibs. 1 ounce.
Also to Ptlmn. Wayne Griffin and his miss us
on the arrival of twin girls. Watch the clothing
bill go up now, Wayne ... A fond farewell
is being sent out to Ptlmn. John Belskey
who recently retired. Best of luck, John, on
your retirement. John had quite a dance band
in his early days ... If you happen to overhear
our secretary speaking French, it's because
he spent sometime on his furlough In

9th District: District Commander Howard
Pierson recently underwent surgery for an
eye operation at Saint George's Hospital. The
Commander is now recuperating in his home
... Boys Will Be Boys: District Secretary
Robert Schott's two young athletic boys were
the unfortunate victims of leg injuries. Richard,
13, just finished shedding his plaster
cast of his right leg, when younger brother,
Patrick, 11 , fell off his bicycle and had the
unpleasant feeling of having a cast applied to
his left leg ... Honorable Mentions were accorded
to the following patrolmen for excellent
police work: leonard Banasiak, John
Paczkowski, Ernest Brueckman, Gerald Wil·
Iiams, Thomas Horton, William Randich, Richard
Poppish, John Kelleher, Chester Zubrzycki,
Joseph Curtin, Joseph Ciez, Allan Burgert and

Warrant Officers Robert Pevitts and Robert
Bovenizer are averaging 500% on apprehensions.

8th District: The 8th District Bowling League
had started the 1st week with a bang. After
hearing all summer long about 600 series,
none was attained. There were a few 500
series and also 3 casualties, "Medical Roll."
Well, it's better than last years' openingwe
had 7 men that hit the medical roll then.
Boy, are we in condition! ... Ray Collins has
half of a ball team-five boys. They certainly
made themselves proud in the many Little
Leagues they played in. We have assurance
from Ray, Sr., that in 5 years, he'll field a
100% Collins team. Let's get going, boy ...
One of our better crossing guards, Cecelia
Shea, passed away. She will long be remembered
by her many friends ... Our county
midwife, John Goles, has hit the medical roll.
John, if you keep this up, the 27 births you
brag about will be surpassed ... Walter Kluka
has also gone on medical roll. The men wish
you a speedy recovery and a fast return to
work ... Condolence on the passing of Ray
ludwig's mother and Tom McGeegan's sister
in Ireland ... Recent transfer was Ptlmn.
Stapleton to the 3rd district. Taking over in
his place is Bernard Urycki ... We have 2
future detectives, Charles lee and Hoeflinger,
now in training. Lee is leaning towards
Homicide and Hoeflinger wants Vice-right
up his alley . . . Ray McNally had quite a
chase. Remember, Ray, there are 20 tickets
in a book and you only issued 18 to this individual.

7th District: We open on a sad note-the
death of retired Ptlmn. Francis Valkenberg.
Many at "7" can recall Frank's days in plain
clothes car # 43. Two of his sons shall carry
on in the Department, Francis at the 12th and
John here at "7". John proudly wears his
dad's old star, # 2108 ... Johnny-Come­
Latelys: Cadets John laughrans and Alfred
Pirolli seem to be on the ball. We do wish
they follow thru and become two of the "Finest
in Blue" ... There is something missing
on the day watch, and we believe it to be
the pleasant smile of our civilian typist
Thelma Jones, now on vacation ... After 29
years (all spent at 7th) of loyal and faithful
services, our beloved lock-up keeper, John J.
Zupert, turned in his star and ticket book.
(Hear that, Pete A. Naughton), ah, summons
book. The skipper saw to it that John had a
nice going-away dinner here at "7" . .. We
all salute Capt. John Mulchrone and wish
him luck in his promotion to Directorship of
the V.C.D. The men here at "7" will never
forget the classes the captain set up and conducted
in the court room for all of us wouldbe
sergeants. Some of us pupils placed high
on the list (right near that man's signature
from the Civil Service Board) . . . We tip
our hats to Ptlmn. Milton Blake, formerly of
"7," now with Human Relations Section, for
his fine work in the area of "7" ... Also the
Youth Officers of Area # 3j surely dedicated
men.

on the loss of his sister, and R_
Sobczynski on the passing of his father . ..
Congratulations to Gary Partin, "the Georgia
peach." He's a father again for the sixth
timej it's a baby girl named Laura Anne. Also,
Steve Matkovich's wife had a baby girl named
Lisa Marie ... Our hats are off to Bob Rydberg
and leroy Sheppard who are doing a
terrific job keeping the business section clear
of winos and teen-age gangs. They are also
among the top in the district in traffic enforcements
... Does anyone know what DW
stands for? That is the new nickname that
they placed on Dave "D-W" laughlin, and
from what I hear, I think that it fits him to a
T . . . Donald "Bumps" Malkowski is using
his head on the job. Recently he knocked a
door open with his head. His hair ain't
curley; it's the bump on his head ... Congratulations
to J. Bastie, J. Murillo and K.
"hill-william" Hayes who received a Department
Commendation for the apprehension of
a felon who was wanted for armed robbery
and aggravated battery. They recovered $2,­
331.60 USC and a gun that was used in the
crime ... Well, miracles never cease. James
"lad" McGreal is going to detectives' school
and will be leaving the 4th. Well, I won't have
to worry about him stealing my jokes anymore.
