WAIS TM
Wide Area Interoperability System
Benefits
 Dispatch capabilities allow
operators to monitor or communicate
directly with system
users.
 Provides an easily scalable
wide-area interoperability communications
platform for critical
incident command and control.
 Allows efficient use of existing
network resources with commercial-off-the-shelf
(COTS)
equipment, using proven Radio
over IP (RoIP) and Voice over IP
(VoIP) technology.
 Allows disparate radio systems
to be connected locally, regionally,
statewide, or in a crossnation
network.
 Provides password-protected
remote access from anywhere
on the network.
 The WAIS Controller’s userfriendly
interface clearly presents
the state of the system and
allows operators to build talk
groups swiftly.
WAIS Overview
WAIS is an expandable interoperability
solution that links
multiple communication
devices through any IP network:
LAN, WAN, or the
Internet. A WAIS may range
from just a few sites to an
entire statewide system or larger,
incorporating both fixed
sites and mobile platforms
with network access. A PC
application called the WAIS
Controller provides system
control and can be installed at
any number of points on the
network; each may control the
entire system or any portion of
it, using password-protected
permission sets of specific sites
and modules. As a safety feature,
system administrators can
control the entire system or
temporarily take over for
another operator from any
WAIS Controller installation.
Operators stationed at the control
points can easily form and
disband multiple-user talk
A wide area interoperability system (WAIS) interconnects
communications systems over existing network
infrastructure - allowing users of disparate
radios, telephones, satellite phones, and dispatch
centers to communicate with each other locally,
regionally, or in systems that span entire states.
groups or adjust site and module
settings. The WAIS
Controller’s new Dispatch features,
which take advantage of
the PC’s sound card, allow
operators to monitor or communicate
directly with selected
system users.
WAIS Architecture
Most WAIS end users interface
the system via the industrystandard
radio interoperability
gateway, Raytheon’s ACU-
2000IP or ACU-1000. Any
number of local, ACU-based
systems, along with operator
stations and other communications
assets, are linked to create
a WAIS. A WAIS has no
single failure point, and local
systems can continue to operate
independently during periods
of network trouble. The
number of network audio links
from each local interoperability
system (LIS) is variable,
being determined at installation
time to suit system
requirements. Single, inde-
pendent users or radio systems
not part of an LIS can join the
WAIS using Raytheon’s NXU-
2A.
WAIS Controller
The WAIS Controller manages
system resources and provides
the Graphical User Interface
(GUI) for the WAIS. It monitors
the system, keeping operators
apprised of its state in real
time. It provides an Overview,
which manages connections
among all or any subset of
sites, or the operator can
switch to the Local View when
it is necessary to focus on a
single site. The Dispatch View
is an optional feature that
allows monitoring of or direct
communication with end
users. Each site and module
has its own graphical icon,
making them easy to identify
at a glance. The WAIS
Controller comes with a large
library of icons, and custom
icons can be added.
