WAMS/EMS/DSA Synergies
State Estimation. Improved State Estimation
leads to more reliable and accurate results for
the network security applications that depend
on the results. e-terraphasorpoint 3.0 provides
phasor data to the EMS for State Estimation.
Situational Awareness for Oscillations.
e-terraphasorpoint 3.0 oscillation damping,
geographic information and alarms can be
presented in e-terravision, together with
simulation-based analysis and any other
significant alarms. The user can associate
oscillation problems with other disturbed
network conditions.
General WAMS Alarm Presentation.
e-terraphasorpoint 3.0 can generate highlevel
warnings of wide-area system conditions
of concern. It provides a great deal of flexibility
to create system-wide alarms, supplementing
more conventional EMS alarms that are difficult
to interpret under critical conditions leading
to “alarm floods”. These high-level warnings
are presented in the e-terraplatform, drawing
the operators’ attention to a system issue, and
e-terraphasorpoint 3.0 can then be used to
identify the source of the issue.
Success Stories
TRANSMISSION
Mode Power Path was used successfully after large, low frequency oscillations tripped an
existing protection scheme. 1,100 MW of load was disconnected, affecting millions and
threatening system collapse. A hydro plant influencing mode stability was identified and its
governor controller time constant reduced, improving performance significantly.
Oscillatory Stability Management was used to provide a 300MW increase in secure power
flows over a 1000MW interconnector, analyzing system dynamic behavior to allow a damping
measurement based limit, rather than a lower model-based limit with margin.
Islanding, Resynchronization & Blackstart detected islanding of a large hydro generator and
load where it was not identifiable through the EMS due to topology errors. The information
changed the operator’s course of action to address the problem, and provided visualization
of frequency and stability.
Connection of Renewables. e-terraphasorpoint 3.0 is used to identify long-term trends in the
frequency and oscillatory stability of the network as renewable energy penetration increases.

Future Directions
In the future, e-terraphasorpoint 3.0 will
support additional features to ease the tasks and
challenges of transmission network management
including:
Integrated Dispatcher Training
Environment
Alstom Grid’s integrated training environment
will allow operators to learn to use WAMS
together with the EMS for diagnosing and
resolving problems.
Dynamic Constraint Management
e-terraphasorpoint 3.0 will enable alarm limits
to adapt to thresholds derived from EMS/DSA
sources. For example, transient and voltage
stability thresholds can be integrated into
e-terraphasorpoint 3.0 for dynamic alarm
management and constraint relief.
Post-Event Analysis
Event reporting using WAMS/EMS/DSA data
with a simple unified user interface for the
various data sources, thus reducing time to
produce event reports.
Hybrid WAMS/DSA/EMS Voltage Stability
Using phasor-based stability indices and realtime
presentation, together with EMS/DSAbased
measurement of reactive reserves and
contingency analysis, voltage stability problems
can be flagged and presented in a way that
the condition can be understood and action
taken to resolve.
