Top Storylines 

• William and Mary begins play in the Red Auerbach Colonial Classic with its 

first game against St. Francis (NY) since the 1939-40 season ... In the only meeting 

between the two schools, the Tribe emerged victorious with a 32-28 win on 

the road. 

• W&M is led by first-year head coach Tony Shaver ... Shaver put together a record 

of 358-121 (.747) in an outstanding 17-year career at Division III Hampden-Sydney 

prior to joining the Tribe ... While there, he led the Tigers to eight Old Dominion 

Athletic Conference championships, 12 20-win seasons and 11 NCAA Tourna- 

ment appearances (including trips to the Final

• Shaver was well-known for his up-tempo style at

(80-65) on Dec. 20 and beat Campbell (89-70) on Dec. 22 ... The last time W&M 

had three straight 80-plus-point non-overtime contests was to open the 1976-77 

season with wins over Christopher Newport (105-51), Hampden-Sydney (92- 

67) and The Citadel (94-61). 

• The Tribe’s 91 points against Liberty was the most for W&M since defeating 

Virginia Commonwealth, 92-81, on Jan, 12, 2002 ... The 27-point margin of victory 

was the most by the Green and Gold since defeating VCU, 85-56, on Feb. 5, 

2000 ... The Tribe’s 14 three pointers made in the game tied a W&M Hall record 

first set by the Tribe on Feb. 27, 1995 against George Mason and then tied by 

VCU last season on Jan. 12. 

• Tribe senior forward Adam Hess was voted the 2003-04 Colonial Athletic Association 

Preseason Player of the Year at the league’s media day on October 29 in 

Washington, DC ... With 20.1 points per game last season, he is the conference’s 

top-returning scorer and is the only returning first team All-CAA selection.

televised this season. The Jan. 5 game at Virginia 

and the contest against George Mason on Jan. 31

W&M’s Adam Hess Voted CAA Preseason 

Player of the Year 

Senior forward Adam Hess was voted 

the 2003-04 Colonial Athletic Association’s 

Preseason Player of the Year 

by the media at the conference’s annual 

media day, held at the Washington, DC 

ESPNZone on November 29 ... Hess was 

also projected by Sporting News as the 

league’s best player ... No W&M player 

has ever been named CAA Player of the 

Year at the end of the season ... Only 

twice in history has a Tribe men’s basketball 

player been selected as any 

league’s player of the year ... Jeff Cohen 

(1961) and Tom Jasper (1971) were each 

named Southern Conference Player of 

the Year ... Hess has been unanimously 

picked to be the only player this season 

to repeat as a first team All-CAA honoree, 

including predictions by the 

conference’s coaches and media and numerous 

publications, including Athlon, 

Basketball News, Lindy’s, Sporting News, 

and Street & Smith’s.

Not only is Adam Hess one of the top

the first game of such an event since Dec.

Rookie, walk-on guard Adam Trumbower

came off the bench to score eight 

points and pull down seven rebounds ... 

The Roanoke, VA native, who played 

three seasons of high school ball at Cave 

Spring with Duke star J.J. Redick, is averaging 

7.0 points, 5.0 rebounds and 22.5 

minutes in the first two games. 

Stepping Up 

Although still early in the season, three 

W&M players are showing a marked 

improvement in their performance this 

year as their roles on the team have 

changed ... Senior forward Zeb Cope, 

junior guard Nick D’Antoni and sophomore 

guard Taylor Mokris are flourishing 

this season, each averaging more than 

12.0 points and 26.5 minutes per game 

after ending last season at less than 4.2 

points and 16.3 minutes per outing. 

High Scoring Hess 

In both games this season, the high-scoring 

games of Adam Hess have ranked 

him in the top-20 in the nation in scoring 

on that particular day ... That includes 

his 27 points on Nov. 23 against Liberty, 

the second-most points scored by one 

player that day ... Through Nov. 24, his 

average of 26.0 ppg was the third-highest 

in the country.

Guard the Line 

One area that the Tribe hopes to improve 

on this year is its defense of the threepoint 

line ... W&M significantly improved 

its performance in that area in the 

season-opener, holding Liberty to just 4- 

21 (.190) from long range ... Last season, 

W&M opponents shot .360 (250-695) 

from beyond the arc ... The 250 three 

pointers made is by far the most ever allowed 

in a season by the Tribe ... The previous 

high was 178 given up in the 2000- 

01 campaign ... Opposing teams 

outscored W&M, 750-522, from the 

three-point line, a difference of 228 

points, which was almost twice the margin 

by which the Tribe was outscored all 

of last season (119 points). 

Hess 30-Point Games 

Last season, Adam Hess set a school 

record with five 30-point games in a 

single season ... He also had two games 

in which he just missed the mark, scoring 

29 points ... With 31 points at 

Campbell on Dec. 30, 2002 and 33 points 

against Charleston Southern on Jan. 2, 

2003, he became the first W&M player 

with 30 or more points in consecutive 

games since the 1966-67 season, when 

Ron Panneton had 31 against Hampden- 

Sydney on Jan. 11, 1967 and put up 38 at 

Richmond on Jan. 14, 1967.

Taking Care of the Ball 

The Tribe is averaging just 11.5 turnovers 

in two games this season, continuing a 

trend from last year ... W&M ranked tied 

with Akron for 23rd in Division I last 

season with just 12.5 turnovers per game 

... W&M’s 349 giveaways was the secondfewest 

in a season since the stat was consistently 

kept (1975-76 season), trailing 

only the 1984 season when the Tribe had 

340 turnovers.

W&M’s season-opening win against Liberty 

marked the fifth time in the last eight 

years that the Tribe has won its first game 

of the season, despite losing its two previous 

lidlifters ... Last season the Tribe 

began the year with a 79-76 home loss to 

Fordham on Nov. 22, 2002 ... The

Back-to-Back Games 

W&M opened the 2003-04 season with 

games on consecutive days in different 

locations (Nov. 23 at home vs. Liberty 

and Nov. 24 at Radford) ... It was the first 

time W&M played on consecutive days 

in different arenas since the 1976-77 season, 

when the Tribe won at UC Santa Barbara 

(78-65) on Dec. 22, 1976, before falling 

at eighth-ranked UCLA (59-55) on 

Dec. 23. 

W&M Coaching Debuts 

Tony Shaver became the 12th of W&M’s 

30 head men’s basketball coaches to win 

his Tribe debut ... W&M’s first-time 

coaches have done well since the start of 

the 1974-75 season, with five of the seven 

winning their first game at the College, 

and the other two losing by just three 

points each ... The last time a Tribe men- 

tor had a winning record in his first season 

at W&M was Bruce Parkhill’s 16-10 

(.615) mark in the 1977-78 campaign.

On May 2, 2003, the William and 

Mary athletics department announced 

the hiring of Tony Shaver as the 30th 

men’s basketball coach in the history of 

the College. 

“Bringing a coach and person the 

caliber of a Tony Shaver into the William 

and Mary program certainly makes this 

an exciting day for the College,” said director 

of athletics Terry Driscoll at the 

time of the hire. “His resume speaks for 

itself in terms of his coaching abilities, 

but beyond that, I believe that he possesses 

all the intangible qualities that will 

make him a perfect fit for our school and 

program.” 

Shaver came to W&M after coaching 

for 17 seasons at Hampden-Sydney, compiling 

a record of 358-121 (.747). He 

turned the Tigers into a Division III national 

powerhouse, leading the men’s 

basketball team to eight Old Dominion 

Athletic Conference titles, 12 20-win seasons 

and 11 NCAA Division III Tournament 

appearances. The winningest basketball 

coach in the program’s history, he 

was named the ODAC and South Region 

Coach of the Year in 1995, 1999 and 2000, 

and was picked as the Virginia Sports Information 

Directors Division II-III Coach 

of the Year in 1997, 1999 and 2000. 

Last season, Shaver took the Tigers 

to the NCAA Division III Final Four for 

the second time in his career, as his team 

finished the season with a record of 28- 

4, tied for the second-most wins in the 

program’s history. H-SC opened the 2003 

season by winning its first 22 games and 

was ranked as high as second in the nation 

as it finished the regular season with 

a record of 23-1. 

In 1999, Shaver led H-SC to the national 

championship game, where the Tigers 

lost by one point in double-overtime 

to Wisconsin-Platteville. The team finished 

with a record of 29-3, setting a 

school record for the most wins in a 

single season. 

Together with his team’s successes 

on the court, Shaver also has a firm 

committment to his players’ success in 

the classroom. In 1999, one of his charges, 

Jack Jirak, was named the ODAC 

Scholar-Athlete of the Year and was also 

awarded the Gammon Cup as the topstudent-athlete 

at the college. Two of

and Russell Turner (1992) earned Academic 

All-America honors. A number of 

his players have been named to the Academic 

All-ODAC squad, including six 

student-athletes in 1998. 

Shaver first led the Tigers to the national 

postseason in 1988-89, just his third 

season as the team’s head coach. That 

year, H-SC won the ODAC championship, 

ending the season with a 21-8 

record. 

Prior to taking over at Hampden- 

Sydney for the 1986-87 campaign, Shaver 

spent 10 years as the head boys’ basketball 

coach at Episcopal High School in 

Alexandria, Virginia. He was named the 

Virginia State Private School Coach of the 

Year in 1986, and was twice picked as the 

Alexandria Coach of the Year, while winning 

73 percent of his games. 

A 1976 graduate of North Carolina, 

Shaver was a guard on the Tar Heel 

men’s basketball team from 1972-75 under 

head coach Dean Smith. Originally 

Shaver’s Coaching Career 

a walk-on, he earned a scholarship his 

rookie season, when he was awarded the 

prestigious Butch Bennett Award, presented 

to the team’s most outstanding 

freshman. 

A native of High Point, North Carolina, 

Shaver and his wife, Ann, are the 

parents of three sons: Christopher (22), a 

senior pitcher on W&M’s baseball team, 

Austin (18) and Jackson (12).

Nov. 23, 2003 • Williamsburg, VA • William and Mary Hall 

William and Mary put on a shooting clinic from behind the arc, tying 

the arena record with 14 three-pointers in a 91-64 victory over Liberty in 

the Tribe’s first game under new coach Tony Shaver. 

With the Tribe up 25-19 and just over seven minutes remaining in the 

first half, that’s when W&M began to turn it on from three-point range. 

Sophomore guard Taylor Mokris drained a three-pointer, followed by another 

trey by senior forward Adam Hess that put W&M ahead 31-19. After 

a Liberty basket, Mokris converted again from deep and two possessions 

later, senior Zeb Cope connected to make the score 37-23. Hess hit another 

three and then freshman guard Adam Trumbower converted one of his 

own to finalize the Tribe’s run and break the game open at 43-23. 

The halftime stats told the tale of the shooting percentages, as Liberty 

(0-2) was connecting on 39.3 percent of its shots from the field, including 1 

of 8 (.125) from three-point range. W&M, meanwhile, made 56.7 percent of 

its first half shots, including an incredible 9 of 13 (.692) from beyond the 

three-point arc. 

The second half was more of the same for the Tribe, as three of W&M’s 

first five field goals were three-pointers. W&M continued to impress offensively 

and played sound defensive basketball, as the lead went up to as 

many as 30 points on a few occasions before Liberty made a free throw in 

the final seconds to set the final margin of 27 points in the Tribe’s favor. 

The Tribe had a balanced offensive attack, with four players scoring 

in double figures, led by Hess. The preseason CAA Player of the Year hit 

10 of his 16 shots, including five of eight from three-point range, for 27 

points on the afternoon. He also contributed six rebounds and three assists. 

Also impressive for W&M was Cope. The senior forward played a 

team-high 35 minutes and made six field goals, including two three-pointers. 

Coming into this season, Cope had attempted four three-pointers in 

his career, making just one of them. He also added a team-high eight rebounds 

and two steals. 

Mokris was a sparkplug off of the bench for W&M, making eight of 

his 11 attempts for a career-high 19 points. He also collected a career-best 

seven rebounds.

William and Mary’s men’s basketball team lost at Radford, 89-86, at 

the Dedmon Center. 

Radford took a 14-5 lead less than four minutes into the game, but 

W&M battled back, eventually taking a 24-23 lead on a three-pointer by 

junior guard Nick D’Antoni. Tribe senior forward Adam Hess keyed the 

comeback, scoring 10 straight points for the Green and Gold. Radford again 

pulled ahead, going up by seven, 35-28, with 7:05 remaining. The Tribe 

fought back again, however, cutting the lead to one on layups by freshman 

Corey Cofield, senior Zeb Cope and sophomore Taylor Mokris\. The Highlanders 

went up 43-38 with 1:40 remaining, before a barrage of threes, two 

by D’Antoni and one by Mokris, led to W&M holding a 47-45 lead. Radford’s 

Chris Oliver hit on one of two free throws with two seconds left to cut the 

Tribe lead to 47-46 at the break. 

W&M extended its lead to nine points, 59-50, with 16:15 left in the 

second on a layup by redshirt freshman center Brian Hutt. Radford’s Whit 

Holcomb-Faye single-handedly cut the lead to two, scoring seven of his 

game-high 29 points to bring the score to 59-57 in favor of the Tribe with 

14:32 to play. Thirteen times over the next 14 minutes, the Highlanders 

would either cut the Tribe’s lead to one, or tie the score, but on each occasion 

W&M responded, until Radford’s Andre Bynum connected on a pair 

of free throws to give the home team a one-point, 87-86, lead with 32 seconds 

in the game. The Tribe was forced to foul down the stretch and Radford 

converted two of its last four free throws to secure the 89-86 win. 

Hess paced the Tribe for the second straight game with 25 points, also 

collecting seven rebounds with four assists. Cope just missed a doubledouble 

with a career-high 17 points to go with a game-high nine rebounds, 

while D’Antoni added 16 points to the Tribe cause. Freshman guard Adam 

Trumbower played well coming off the bench, scoring eight points and 

pulling down seven rebounds, including four offensive. Along with 

Holcomb-Faye’s 29 points, Chris Goodin had 17 and Olumuyiwa Popoola 

added 16 for Radford.
