See page 4 for details on the Resource Marzano Leadership
academy which focuses on sound learning and teaching.
It seems as if we say the same thing every year around this time
of year – where has the summer gone? With the extreme heat in
July and now the lack of sufficient moisture, it has been a different
kind of summer. As is always the case, we offered over 80 workshops,
seminars and conferences this summer to over 2,000 educators from
across our service region and the State.
I know you’re going to be extremely busy as the new school year begins but if you can carve out some time for
reading, I’d like to recommend a book. Its title, learning targets – helping students aim for understanding in
today’s lesson. In this book, Susan brookhart and Connie Moss contend that improving student learning and
achievement happens in the immediacy of an individual lesson – what they call “today’s lesson” – or it doesn’t
happen at all.
The key to making today’s lesson meaningful? learning targets. Written from a students’ point of view, a
learning target describes a lesson-size chunk of information and skills that students will come to know deeply.
each lesson’s learning target connects to the next lesson’s target, enabling students to master a coherent
series of challenges that ultimately lead to important curricular standards.
Drawing from the authors’ extensive research and professional learning partnerships with classrooms, schools
and school districts, this practical book:
1. Provides strategies for designing learning targets that promote higher-order thinking and foster student
goal setting, self-assessment and self-regulation.
2. Situates learning targets in a theory of action that students, teachers, principals and central-office
administrators can use to unify their effort to raise student achievement and create a culture of evidencebased,
results-oriented practice.
3. explains how to design a strong performance of understanding, an activity that produces evidence of
students’ progress toward the learning target.
4. Shows how to use learning targets to guide summative assessment and grading.
learning Targets also includes reproducible planning forms, a classroom walk through guide, a lesson-planning
process guide and guides to teacher and student self-assessment.
What students are actually doing during today’s lesson is both the source of and the yardstick for school
improvement efforts. by applying the insights in this book to your own work, you can improve your teaching
expertise and dramatically empower all students as stakeholders in their own learning.
This book is available from our Media Center. Call laVonne any day of the week, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, to check
it out. You can also purchase it from ASCD by calling (800) 933-2723. I hope you seriously consider reading
this book. It will be well worth your time.
flowers which they took home. Some of the Title One
students had the opportunity to read aloud Shel Silverstein
poems to the audience.
Moms had the opportunity to spend some quality time with
their children in a relaxed atmosphere. They were also able
to interact with other mothers and their children, while
creating fun flowers with their own children.
Young Authors/Young Artists Conference
Last Call, All Aboard!
09
By nicole koll,
Pre k-12 education administrative coordinator
Over 1300 students from 38 Central Minnesota school districts
answered the train whistle announcing the annual Young
Authors/Young Artists (YAYA) Student Conference on May 15 and
16, 2012 at the College of St. benedict’s, hosted by Resource
Training & Solutions. The two-day event featured artists in
Minnesota that have published and been recognized for children
and teen literature and songwriting. All the students had the
chance to learn how to write or tell stories through drawing,
songwriting, poetry, scrapbooking/journaling, and exploring their
imagination.
The conference began with the students having an experience
that is becoming rarer; they were introduced to and entertained
by David Malmberg, professional ventriloquist, and his closest
friends, Toby the Turtle and Simon Spencer. Malmberg’s
interaction with the students through his quick wit, antics, and
guitar playing set the mood for the day. The students left the
auditorium laughing and trying to imitate the puppets, some
even tried talking without moving their lips.
As the day went on, students could be found sitting alone or in
groups working on their pictures or finishing their journaling or
story from their sessions. For teachers, it was inspiring to see
their students excited and so absorbed in learning.
The day was an experience that most of them will not soon
forget. Comments circulated in student conversations about the
conference, such as:
The day went “pretty good, except for my hand hurt afterwards.”
“excellent! I’ve never actually been to St. benedict’s before. I learned new techniques.”
“I would love to come back!”
“I never knew learning could be so much fun!”
“It was absolutely amazing! I loved learning to put description in my writing.”
“It was one of the best field trips ever!”
“The best part of my day was learning.”
“It was unforgettable.”
“It was fun to learn new things to advance and enhance my writing.” WRITE
Next year’s Young Authors/Young Artists Conference promises to
be just as exciting with the theme, “Tales From Camp YAYA.” We
look forward to helping our districts enhance student learning in
all different areas. If your school is interested in receiving more
information about this conference, don’t hesitate to contact our
office at 320-255-3236.
INTRODUCES HEaLTHY fOOD OpTIONS
We are excited to be a leader in implementing healthy eating guidelines for our members.
11
By tammy Biery, director of administrative services
Resource is taking steps to expand our wellness program by
providing members and guests with healthy food options. Heart
disease, cancer and stroke are the top causes of death, and are
largely affected by what people eat and as well as their physical
activity level. based on the questions/comments/observations
from members and staff, we have noticed people have become
more health conscious and are trying to eat smart and move
more. We want to support our members and staff by providing
opportunities for a healthier environment. Food choices such
as fruits, vegetables, whole grain breads and pastas and low fat
dairy products are better choices for preventing many diseases.
To start this initiative, we worked with Diane Giambruno,
registered dietitian at the Centra Care Heart Center to
determine dietary guidelines to follow. We then evaluated what
we serve and met with caterers to develop menus that were
within the guidelines. The team at Resource is excited to be one
of the first organizations in the community to develop such a
program.
Starting in August 2012, activities and events such as
meetings, seminars, staff activities held at Resource Training
& Solutions will include opportunities for healthy foods and
beverages by:
east Central School District survived an intense wellness
challenge last school year. The staff who participated were
enthused and had a lot of fun.
The east Central participants tracked their progress throughout
the challenge by watching the “eagle Island of Good Health”
wall map.
During the first week of the survivor challenge, east Central
went from 150 survivors down to 38 survivors!!! Tough
competition! Way to motivate and encourage each other east
WELLNESS SURVIVOR CHaLLENGE

By anthony farag, Purchasing specialist & trainer
On August 16th I attended information sessions on the New
School Nutrition Requirements held in the Twin Cities at MDe.
In attending sessions on the Healthy Hunger Free kids Act
and the Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program. I learned of some
fundamental changes and opportunities. There are going to
be maximum limits on grains and meats. One of the learners
protested on how you deal with football players who want to
come back for seconds on hamburger. The trainer pointed
out that that will be a challenge and overall the new Nutrition
Requirements will mean “a cultural change.”
Under the old meal plan, fruits and vegetables could be
combined as a single group. No longer. You cannot substitute
a fruit for a vegetable.
Vegetables must be served daily.
The old meal plan didn’t have a whole grain requirement. The
new meal plan requires at least half of grains to be “whole
grain rich.” Whole grain rich means the majority of ingredients
are whole grain. In 2014-2015 this will change to be that All
GRAINS are whole grain rich.”
No change in milk requirements.
Again, there are maximum limits on meats and meat
alternates.
There is a plan for reducing sodium by over 50% in school
lunches that goes all the way out to 2023.
A grant program exists that is open to schools with over 50%
free and reduced lunch populations for funds to introduce
fresh fruits and vegetables in the classroom outside of
lunchtime.
aquatic facilities Operator
October 18 & 19, 2012 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. both days. (course code #9103)
bob laDuke of Signature Aquatics is partnering with Resource Training &
Solutions to provide the Aquatic Facility Operator (AFO) Workshop –
The Aquatic Facility Operator (AFO) Course is an up-to-date 5 year certification
for staff assigned to operate and manage public swimming pools
such as those located in schools. It was created by the National Park and
Recreation Association (NRPA) with a goal of making pool facilities safer
and more efficient to operate.
The AFO program became available to MN Pool Operators in the mid-1997
and is recognized by the State of Minnesota as required certification for
staff responsible for operating a public pool.
Highlights of the course include:
• Understanding how pools operate as a “system” and what components
make-up that system.
• Information on the newest technologies currently being used in the
aquatics industry.
• The AFO Manual that all participants receive is filled with excellent
information that is easy to understand and implement at your pool
site.
• A simplified testing procedure.
AFO classes are a rigorous but fun two day educational workshop. both
new and long-time Pool Operators work together during the class to become
better at the challenging task of operating a public swimming pool.
Health assistant Training
September 20, 2012 3:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. (course code #9104)
Heidi Olson, RN, MA, has practiced nursing for 34 years. In that time,
she has worked in a wide variety of settings, including a hospice, medical
clinic and correctional facility. She was a school health aide, also! Heidi
has been a staff educator and is certified to teach the Home Health Aide/
Nursing Assistant program. Heidi loves to teach and loves a good laugh.
Combining those two makes for a fun but very practical in-service.
This program focuses on the role of the school health aide. We will
include everything from first aid to allergies to seizures to knowing what to
do when you are in over your head. The participants will leave with handouts,
questions answered and a pride in what they do for the children they
serve.
The Class 5
Plan for k-12
Schools is a behavior-based energy
efficiency program that helps districts decrease
energy use and costs, engage staff and
students, and receive eNeRGY STAR recognition.
In addition to the savings, the Plan with help
districts:
Saving money and going green are two things
that all school districts are interested in. by
using the See Program on average a district will
see an 8% energy decrease within in the first
year and with that savings the program will have
paid for itself in at least 18 months.
• Demonstrate Responsibility
lower utility bills show tax payers that you are
committed to using their investment wisely.
• Improve Learning
energy efficient strategies often result in
better lighting, temperature control, acoustics
and air quality, which can translate to better
learning.
• Preserve the Environment
More than 80% of greenhouse gas emissions
are from the production, distribution, and
disposal of energy.
• Empower Students
Instilling wise energy habits in students
creates lifelong conservationists and teaches
them to care about the impact of their
actions.
• Become an Energy Star Partner
benefits include enhanced credibilty, visibility
and national recognition through the eNeRGY
STAR program.
• Build Self-Sufficiency
Shifting everyone in the district toward energy
efficient choices ensures that good practices
remain in place and continue generating
savings month after month, year after year.
QuesTIon:
What benefit will the new Federal Health Care Reform
bring to me? Can you advise how to find out more about
the new options?
Answer:
At this time, Federal Health Care Reform rules,
regulations and delivery are evolving through the
Minnesota exchange. The Minnesota exchange is being
created by a taskforce and a number of committees.
The application for the State of Minnesota to create
the exchange should be submitted to the Federal
Government by December of 2012. Here is what we
know so far:
The Patient Protection Affordability and Accountability Act
(PPACA) (also known as the Federal Health Care Reform)
includes a definition of health insurance affordability
based on an employee’s cost to participate in his/her
employer’s health plan. The current affordability test
under the PPACA is that a health plan is not affordable
if the employee cost share for single coverage exceeds
9.5% of household income. In the event the employee’s
cost for single coverage exceeds 9.5% of that employee’s
household income (and the household income is less
than 400% of the Federal Poverty level), that employee
may qualify for a subsidized health plan provided by the
new Minnesota exchange. In other words, to qualify
under the PPACA, a family of four would have to have a
household income less than 400% of the Federal Poverty
level or approximately $92,000.
even families who qualify under the PPACA will still want
to compare the cost of subsidized health insurance
through the Minnesota exchange to the cost of health
insurance through their employer to see which is lower.
Although the initial rules (based on the cost of single
coverage) were issued in May, the Federal Government
deferred the final ruling on the cost of family coverage.
More information about the new Minnesota exchange will
be provided when it becomes available on the State of
QuesTIon:
My son is going off to college soon. His college is out of
state. Will he be covered by my health plan out of state?
Answer:
Probably. To verify coverage for your son, contact
the customer service phone number for your health
insurance carrier (bCbS for Resource pool members)
located on your health insurance ID card and confirm
that you have an open access health plan and that the
doctors, clinics and hospitals where your son will attend
college participate in the health plan network. The
good news is that the vast majority of employers in the
Resource pool have open access health plans.
