AMBITION
Like a emerald necklace, the schmale Gera offers
Ilvergehoven an arrangement of unique ecological
spaces offering untold beauty and potentials to the
residents and visitors of Erfurt. Unfortunately due to
access limitations and encroachment issues, these
rich ecological spaces remain hidden from the general
public, yet seen in a sequence, these spaces formulate
a network of Secret Gardens of sorts. The hope is to
stimulate a creative but comprehensive development
strategy to encourage short-medium-long term growth
and development for derelict sites in-and-around
Ilversgehoven.
The Schmale Gera is the starting point in which to
begin the development strategy. Despite it’s various
ownerships this natural waterway provides rich potentials
for connectivity, use and enhancement. The Schmale
Gera is waiting to open up its river banks to the rich
collection of green fields, wetlands, wooded areas,
vegetable gardens, flower gardens ranging in scale,
context, and conditions. Erfurt has “a secret garden”.
This garden comes in all forms and sizes that units the
Ilversgehoven village with its Wilhelmenian Housing and
Industrial heritage.
CULTIVATING THE SECRET GARDEN
From the Schmale Gera in the south west to the
Industrial Yards in the north east, the secret gardens
are identified in the manner of ecological, horticultural,
agricultural and industrial spaces. Ilversgehoven however
is still inhabited by many derelict sites that require either
immediate attention (with little investment) or deserve
a long term development strategy to regenerate and
revitalize the district. These low investment strategies
promote new creative initiatives via agricultural
landscapes, scale, connectivity, and use to re-colonize
these underutilized areas.
GROWING AMBITION:
To encourage any future development in the area there
must be a comprehensive strategy to stimulate growth.
In combination with the enhancement initiatives along
the Schmale Gera ‘Secret Garden(s)’ also proposes
ideas to intensify some existing uses or suggest viable
alternatives. These suggestions aim to transform the
“waste lands” of Ilversgehoven into literally “productive
land”. The resulting urban landscapes are both
productive in use and public in nature. These landscapes
create fresh concepts for future investment.
FRUITS OF LABOR:
The redevelopment of Ilversgehoven can start today.
Beginning the ‘secret garden(s)’ initiative is as simple
as planting a few seeds. The immediate investment for
the re-development can literally be harvested with-in a
year. By introducing Erfurt to the current trend of “Urban-
Agriculture” we transform the site on Mittlerhausestraße
into a working landscape that performs as an industrial
garden for the general public while becoming an active
/ productive landscape for the city. These types of
initiatives can convince future investment opportunities
once the areas target new fresh & trendy user groups.
ACCOMODATING DIVERSITY:
Other initiatives may require more time to develop such
as planting trees, vineyards, or other natural ecosystems
but the interim can be easily resolved by temporary
functions like boarding animals, cultural events, or
seasonal activities. This healthy mix of new amenities
can help transform Ilversgehoven into a vibrant animated
area. The new amenities should be as complementary
as growing barley and hops next to a microbrewery, to
a centre for healthy food care and shopping. Thinking
more strategically with the proximity to the city centre, the
kindergartens and start up media businesses, it becomes
the natural place for companies to locate themselves.
