Airport Pick-up Service 

WelTec offers a free airport pick-up 

service from Wellington airport to your

At the start of each trimester there is an 

orientation programme for new international 

students. Attendance at this programme is 

compulsory and it is an excellent opportunity

a key part of the enrolment process at 

WelTec. All students coming to WelTec 

can take advantage of this free service. 

PeP provides targeted support, including;

styles, study goals, numeracy and literacy 

levels and strategies for success. 

Accommodation 

WelTec can assist you by placing you 

in the right accommodation to suit your 

needs. Wellington is a compact city 

and 10km separate the Petone and city 

campuses so it is important to plan your 

desired living situation. You can choose to 

live with other students, by yourself or with 

a New Zealand family.

A homestay is a great way to experience 

the New Zealand lifestyle, make friends

your own room and all meals are provided. 

For many international parents this is 

an ideal option for their children. We will 

ensure that we introduce you to a family 

that is right for you.

On-campus

The Britannia Park student complex is a 

three-minute walk from the WelTec Petone 

campus. Students have the option of either 

a twin-share room or a single room for 

themselves in shared apartment blocks.

Working in the capital city of New Zealand 

If you are studying for a level 5 Diploma or higher you will normally be permitted 

to work while you study. This will generally allow you to work for up to 20 hours

and to assist with your finances while you study. Just remember your academic 

programme is the most important aspect of your stay in New Zealand and care

Immigration New 

Zealand 

As soon as you receive an offer of a place 

of study at WelTec you should apply for 

a student visa through the nearest New 

Zealand High commission, embassy, 

consulate, or Trade New Zealand office 

with Immigration New Zealand (INZ) 

facilities. 

Full details of immigration requirements, 

advice on rights to employment in New 

Zealand while studying, and reporting 

requirements are available from 

Immigration New Zealand, and can be 

viewed on their website at 

www.immigration.govt.nz 

Student Visa 

Requirements 

To obtain a visa, you must have: 

� An offer of place; 

� A receipt for payment of your WelTec 

fees or a letter showing evidence of 

a scholarship; 

� evidence that you have sufficient funds 

to meet living expenses and return travel 

to your home country, or a notice of full 

scholarship that covers your living 

expenses. 

Student Visa Officer 

Once you are in New Zealand you 

can renew your student visa at WelTec 

with the Student Visa Officer. Please 

contact WelTec International to make an 

appointment. 

note: To comply with minimum academic 

standards and meet student visa 

requirements you must attend 100% 

of your classes at WelTec and show 

reasonable academic progress.

Students studying on Diploma, Degree 

and Graduate Diploma programmes 

are generally permitted to work up to 

20 hours per week during term time and 

full-time (up to 40 hours per week) over the 

summer break. On successful completion 

of a 2-year diploma or degree level 

qualification students are eligible to apply 

for a 12-month graduate job search visa.

Medical Requirements 

� If you intend to study in New Zealand 

for more than six months, you are 

required to provide a completed 

temporary x-ray certificate. 

� If you are intending to study longer 

than 12 months, you will be required to 

complete a medical and x-ray 

certificate. 

note: If you intend to stay in 

New Zealand for longer than two years 

you will also need to complete a police 

certificate. 

� Your passport must not expire during 

your course of study in New Zealand. 

Insurance 

eligibility for Health 

Services 

Most international students are not entitled 

to publicly funded health services while 

in New Zealand. If you receive medical 

treatment during your visit, you may be 

liable for the full costs of that treatment. 

Full details on entitlements to publicly 

funded health services are available 

through the Ministry of Health, and can be 

viewed on their website at 

www.moh.govt.nz. 

Medical and Travel 

Insurance 

International students (including group 

students) must have appropriate and 

current medical and travel insurance while 

in New Zealand. WelTec has arranged 

insurance cover for all international 

students enrolled at WelTec. WelTec covers 

its students through comprehensive 

Travel Insurance and the insurance cost 

is included in your WelTec programme 

fee. Once paid you are covered for health, 

travel and personal effects from your 

journey to New Zealand to the last date of 

your programme plus one week. For more

important note: If you intend to stay in 

New Zealand past the last date of your 

programme you must arrange for your own 

private insurance cover. You may be liable 

for full medical and accident costs without 

adequate insurance cover. 

Accident Insurance 

The Accident compensation corporation 

provides accident insurance for all New 

Zealand citizens, residents, and temporary 

visitors to New Zealand, but you may still 

be liable for all other medical and related 

costs. Further information can be viewed
