The Thorburn Years
hen Neil Thorburn was inaugurated as the 16th president
of Wilmington College in April, 1983, he addressed the major
challenges facing the college in the years ahead. Now, as Thorburn
approaches his retirement, it is appropriate to look back on the past
12 years to see how well those challenges have been met.
At the top of the list, Thorburn expressed the need to "...equip
students of all ages for career and leadership roles..." That
challenge was met head - on in 1984 when the college adopted new
general education requirements for all students.
"An excellent career related major like business or athletic
training is richer if built on a solid foundation in the liberal arts,"
says Thorburn.
Changing needs: In addition to strengthening the general
education requirements, Thorburn felt that "...changing conditions
in agriculture and the rapid shift from industrial employment to
communications and information - related service jobs in our
economy has created a need for higher education on the part of
numerous young people who until recently would not have sought
it."
The demand for skilled personnel in agriculture has been
addressed in numerous ways over the past dozen years. The
addition of the Barrett Academic Farm, the acquisition of additional
acreage, a new computer lab, and strong internships with companies
like Monsanto and CIBA - Geigy have combined to keep
Wilmington's agriculture major at the cutting edge. Moreover, this
year the college begins a nationwide consortium with 11 other
independent colleges and universities with similar programs.
Wilmington's students are also traveling the much - touted
information superhighway. With virtually unlimited access to
computers and world - wide networking capabilities, today' s students
not only learn the necessary job skills, but have access to information
far beyond what their counterparts had less than a decade ago.

has strengthened the curriculum for those seeking a career in
journalism, public relations, advertising, or related fields.
Perhaps the most important benchmark of academic integrity
is accreditation. This process guarantees that academic standards
and practices are met and that students are receiving a quality
education. In 1988 Wilmington was re - accredited by the North

Central Association of Schools and Colleges and was highly
praised for the academic and financial improvements that had been
made. In 1994, the college was again re - accredited by North
Central, this time for the maximum 10 year period.

reins in 1982, on - campus enrollment was slightly above the 800
mark. Over the previous decade, a combination of small entering
classes and a low retention rate had frequently translated into
enrollments of fewer than 700. In his inaugural address, Thorburn
called for more effective marketing strategies, strategies which
would be directed to high schools in southwestern Ohio and appeal
to both urban and rural students.
In the fall of 1987, a new admissions campaign for Wilmington
College was unveiled, using an unlikely lemming as a marketing
tool. The campaign not only brought the college nationwide
attention, but new students as well. On - campus enrollment grew
more than 20 percent over the next three years, and in 1991 the
student body numbered more than 900 for the first time in 18 years.
The marketing campaign continued to focus on Ohio students,
and was revamped in 1993. The results were again impressive,
with huge increases in inquiries and the largest entering class in the
history of the college in 1994.
"Over this period," says Thorburn, "we also saw a significant
increase in our retention rates. That increase is due to a number of
factors: early identification of at risk students, making sure our
students are getting the advising and assistance they need, more
frequent testing, and so on. But probably the biggest single factor
in increasing retention is to recruit the kind of students who will
adapt well to Wilmington College. I think over the past decade
we've been very successful in doing just that."
Adult students: In his calls for better marketing strategies and
strong academic programs, Thorburn did not limit his remarks to
traditional students. During that 1983 speech, the president noted
that, "Even more significant is the percentage of the population
outside the 18 - 22 year - old group who need to take advantage of
higher education in order to improve their current job skills or to
acquire new ones. We can provide that opportunity."
Perhaps the most significant example of providing that
opportunity came in the form of the Cincinnati Branch. Opened in
the fall of 1986 with an enrollment of 76, the Branch now serves
more than 400 students a semester. Again, the key was a strong

marketing strategy, backed by solid
academic offerings.
"We did not attempt to provide
traditional continuing education courses,"
says Thorburn. "Our research showed that
there were already numerous opportunities
for adults in that area. What was needed
was an opportunity for degree programs.
We started with a baccalaureate program in
business, then later expanded to accounting,
and we've been very successful. There's
absolutely no reason why enrollment at the
Branch can't reach the 600 mark within the
next few years."
In 1990 Wilmington College further
expanded its adult offerings by opening an
evening college on its main campus. From
the beginning, enrollment has hovered
around the 100 mark.
"The evening program has been very
successful for us," says Thorburn. "Clinton
County is growing, and as it grows, I think
the number of adults taking advantage of
this opportunity will continue to increase.
"What this has done, of course, is
change the basic structure of the college
over the past decade. When you add in the
approximately 500 students we reach
through our prison programs, you
have as many, if not more non -
traditional, off - campus students
than there are on - campus
students. That trend will continue
over the next decade as well."
Expanded offerings:
Thorburn's commitment to the
incarcerated students is well
documented. During his tenure,
Wilmington expanded its
offerings at the Lebanon
Correctional Institution by
shifting from an associate's
degree to a bachelor's degree
program. In 1989 the college
began offering a degree program
at the Warren Correctional
Institution and non - degree
courses at the Franklin Pre -
Release Center for Women. The
Franklin program has since been
expanded to include an associate
degree curriculum.
"Without a doubt," says
Thorburn, "we have become one of the
national leaders in correctional education.
Our administrative staff and many of our
faculty have traditionally held office in
national organizations and have been used
as consultants for other programs. Over the
past couple of years, Wilmington College
has been at the forefront of national efforts
to prevent a decrease in funding for
incarcerated students."
Unfortunately, Wilmington does not
win all of its battles, and this year the
national crime bill passed by Congress and
signed by President Clinton called for the
elimination of Federal Pell Grants for
inmates. Still, with the help of state aid,
Wilmington's programs at the three
institutions continue, and the college's
administrators remain active in attempts to
find alternative funding.
Quaker principles: Twelve years ago
Thorburn said, "I can find no better example
of our commitment to the principles of the
Quakers who founded this college in 1870.
I am committed to the enhancement of this
program and to the broader field of social
justice education at this college..." Thorburn
has kept that commitment. Moreover, he
has kept a commitment to the overall Quaker

education faculty and staff.
1992
PARTNERS IN EDUCATION, commemorating
100 years of Quaker education, is
published by the Wilmington Yearly
Meeting.

It's standing room only at commencement
day ceremonies when actress
Whoopi Goldberg addresses the Class of
1994.

philosophy which has guided the college
since its inception.
In 1984, the college hired its first
campus minister, a position which has since
been moved to full - time status. In 1990, the
college commemorated 200 years of Quaker
involvement in prisons by commissioning
the photographic works of Grace Wojda,
entitled "Behind Bars." The exhibit was
later displayed at the Smithsonian in
Washington, D.C., with a special reception
held for area alumni.
The Quaker philosophy of servant -
leader is brought to life through the college's
participation in such programs as service
learning and Habitat for Humanity. The
Peace Resource Center was remodeled and
rededicatedin 1992. That same year college
administrators and faculty collaborated with
the Yearly Meeting members to publish the
book, PARTNERS IN EDUCATION.
Perhaps the greatest tribute to the
college's Quaker heritage has been the
establishment of the Westheimer Peace
Symposium. Established in the fall of 1990
with a contribution from Charles and May
Westheimer, the annual event has been a
resounding success from day one, attracting
an audience of more than 1,000 people each
year. Through the symposium, Wilmington
College students and guests have heard
some of the most crucial issues of the day
discussed by a galaxy of international
experts. Over the past four years, people
like Helen Caldicott, Arun Gandhi, Ramsey
Clark, and Randy Forsberg have joined
forces with the Russian ambassador to the
United States, United Nations delegates,
and television and magazine correspondents
like David Hackworth and Barrie Dunsmore
on the Wilmington campus.
The Westheimer gift illustrates another
challenge President Thorburn foresaw when
he first came to Wilmington, that of adequate
funding. For a small, private college, gifts
from alumni and friends are critical to its
success. Over the past dozen years,
Wilmington has received some of its largest
gifts in history, including two individual
contributions that surpassed the $1 million
mark. In 1993, the college concluded the
first phase of its Campaign For Leadership
by announcing that it had raised $3.9 million,
the largest amount ever raised in a
Wilmington campaign.
Major gifts have also provided new
computer equipment for students, enhanced
athletic facilities, and scholarships such as
the Pearl and Burritt Hiatt Scholarships.
But it's not just students who benefit from

gifts. In 1989, for example,
a college renovation project
opened the Brady Galvin
Alumni House. The house
now stands as the centerpiece
for alumni reunions and
activities, as well as a
meeting place for various
campus groups.
When Thorburn became
president of the college, the
endowment was $2.9
million. Today that endowment
stands at $11
million.
The physical appearance
of the campus has also
been a major concern for
Thorburn. "Time and again,"
he says, "the admissions staff
tells me that the attractiveness
of our campus is a big
factor in recruiting students.
Moreover, I think it's our
responsibility to provide a
clean, attractive, and well -
maintained environment for
the students once they come
to campus."
Again, gifts from outside sources have
had much to do with the success of
maintaining a sound, attractive physical
plant. In 1984 Dayton Power & Light Co.
donated sidewalk lights across campus,
enhancing the college's appearance and
providing increased safety. A year later,
Harold and Margret Thomas donated funds
for the construction of a gazebo on the site
of the former Twin Ash residence hall.
Additional sidewalks, parking lots, and
landscaping have all been possible because
of the generosity of alumni and friends.
One of the most dramatic changes to
the physical plant came about as a result of
action by the board of trustees. In 1988 the
board adopted a Campus Master Plan which
spelled out improvements and changes that
would take place over the next 20 years.
Since that time, the plan has been
implemented on numerous occasions,
including the completion of Collett Mall,
additional parking near College Hall, three
new playing fields, and resurfaced tennis
courts.

The Clinton County YMCA was
another important addition to the campus
scene. The 4200 square foot structure,
located adjacent to Hermann Court, was
completed in 1988 and is a clear example of
what Thorburn called for in his inaugural
address when he spoke of "..the kind of
cooperation which can exist between a
college and the community of which it is a
part..."
These then, have been the Thorburn
years. Like the man himself, they have not
been flashy; they have not been flamboyant.
Rather, they have steadily addressed the
challenges he foresaw a dozen years ago.
"I'm proud that Wilmington College is
stronger than ever in its history," says
Thorburn. Academically, financially, and
spiritually, we've reclaimed our place as a
college of quality. We now represent one of
the best values for independent higher
education in Ohio."

ALUMNI NEWS
New Paint Job For Bailey
The Cincinnati Chapter workday
project proved to be another successful event
for the alumni council and the chapter planning
committee. Sixteen participants as
well as staff from the physical plant and
advancement office converged on Bailey
Hall with paint, brushes, grubby clothes,
and refreshments.
The painting lasted nearly four and
one - half hours before the group adjourned
for lunch and a football game. The group
painted the hal 1 way and five rooms. During
homecoming these five rooms were rented
to alumni.
The chapter tailgate party at homecoming
served lunch to 41 guests. Each registered
guest received a free ticket to the
football game and parking privileges in
Kettering parking lot.
Plans for a St. Patrick's Day event and
a summer picnic are currently underway.
The picnic is scheduled for Sharon Woods
in August, 1995.

Alumni Council Active
During Homecoming
Alumni Council Committees have
taken an active role in the first half of the '94 -
'95 fiscal year. The current committees are
as follows: Alumni Relations, Alumni Services,
Alumni Scholarship, Nominating &
Recruiting and Constitution.
The last meeting of council was held on
Oct. 22,1994. Presidential Search Committee
chairman, David Raizk 72 and several
other committee members joined council
for breakfast. The council was brought up to
10 Winter 1995
date on the search process and members
shared their views.
The members received a list of the
current committees listing the council members
serving on each committee. Committee
chairpersons are: Alumni Services, Phil
Calland; College Relations, Ann Marie
Elliott; Nominations & Awards, Bill
Seyfried; Constitution, Rich Heiland.

of the constitution.

Dayton
Chapter
Started
The Dayton/Springfield Chapter held
its first organizational meeting at Clark State
Community College on Nov. 3,1994. Larry
Zerkle '61 agreed to serve as chapter
president. Other committee members include
Rachelle Decker '89, Jane Engle' 72, Debbie
Gilbert '85, Susan Hyde '76, Sally Keifer
Nolan '85, Jenni Panstingel '92. Ex officio
members of the committee are Rich Heiland
'72 president of the Alumni Council, Phil
Calland '59, Chairman of Alumni Services,
and Suzanne Sharp '84, director of alumni
and community relations.
The committee will host an opening
kickoff in or around March, 1995. They are
very interested in alumni ideas for activities
and alumni participation on the planning
committee. Alumni can also serve as a
telephone network caller or mail stuffer.

Tailgate Party Is Big Draw at UD
1 he Ross, Highland, Fayette, and
Clinton County Alumni Chapter has been
busy with a tailgate party and mini kickoffs
in Hillsboro, Wilmington, and Chillicothe.
The tailgate party at the University of
Dayton served as a unique opener for the
chapter. Fifty one alumni and college staff
members gathered in the parking lot at UD
before the Wilmington football game.
The mini kickoffs served the chapter
area as informational meetings and social
gatherings to let local alumni know what

$20,000 each month to provide
power to the 16 buildings
located on campus.
Undoubtedly, the gross of that
bill accounts for the excessive
use of students' reading lamps.
activities the chapter planning committee
had been working on, as well as to find out
what local alumni would like to see from the
chapter.
Hillsboro had 36 in attendance,
Wilmington hosted 41, and 12 attended the
dinner in Chillicothe.
Volunteers from the chapter planning
committee also took part in homecoming.
Many volunteered in the alumni registration
tent, along with Alumni Council members.

Alumni Chapter
In Planning
Stage
Plans are underway to establish a
formal alumni chapter in the Columbus area,
according to alumni director, Suzanne Sharp.
The counties which will be included
are Delaware, Fairfield, Franklin, Knox,
Hall of Fame inductees and other special
guests of the colleges.
The planning committee is still
searching for volunteers from the Ross and
Fayette County areas to serve on the
committee. The committee meets every
second Monday of the month to plan
activities for the area chapter. Those
interested should contact Suzanne Sharp,
director of alumni and community relations
at 1 - 800 - 341 - 9318.

There are currently 594 Wilmington
alumni living in that geographical area.
Sharp says she hopes that the college
can have a planning committee of 12 to 15
alumni, with representation from at least
two - thirds of the counties.
There is also a need for approximately
20 - 25 network callers. Other volunteers to
chair events or to serve on event
subcommittees will be welcomed.

planning committee, as a chapter officer, a
telephone network caller, or mail stuffer

Dr. W. Floyd Faust celebrated
his 90th birthday and the 65th
anniversary of his becoming the
Pastor of the Broad Street
Church of Christ in Columbus,

the pulpit he served for 45 years.
The church was filled, including
the balconies, with many
old friends who came from great
distances to be present.

Electric Co. in 1972. He now

from teaching in 1971. She
writes poetry and is very active
in her community life. Eve and
her husband, Woodridge, live
in Georgetown, KY.

Ira G. Hawk was awarded the
annual "Service Above Self
Award" by the Rotary Club of
Bonita Springs, Fla. He is a director

Area Youth Council, Steering
Committee member of the Leadership
Council of the Bonita
Springs Chamber of Commerce,
and active in his church. He
retirement as an executive with
General Motors Corporation in
Detroit. From 1947 to 1952, he
was director of alumni affairs,
admissions and public relations
for Wilmington College, and
founded The Link, publishing
the first issue in November,
1947.

Dorothy (Elrod) and Everett
Matz have spent the last eight
years since their retirement serving
as VIPs (Volunteers in
Parks). They are members of
the Escapees, an organization of
Support & Caring, which offers
a place to park among like -
minded friends as they travel
around the country. Their home
now is a 32 - foot fifth - wheel with
a "slide - out", which they find
comfortable and convenient living,
whether stationed as VIPs
in a national park or moving
cross - country.

Smith on the death of her husband,
Raymond Smith, on Oct.
11, 1994.
1951
Dean "Oakie" Waddell was
inducted into the Wilmington
College Athletic Hall of Fame,
during the Homecoming activities
on Oct. 22. He was a lineman
on Quaker football teams
for three years and was a starting
catcher on the WC baseball
team for two years. He retired
after a 30 - year teaching and high
school coaching career and now
owns and operates the Waddell
Courier Company.
1953
Carl Barton is now delivering
Meals on Wheels to AIDS victims
through the AIDS Volunteers
of Cincinnati. He does the
same thing for area oldsters
through Cincinnati Area Senior
Services. He continues to serve
on the board of the League For
Animal Welfare and edits the
League newsletter.
Charles Hunt is now the owner
of Quality Training Enterprises.
This company designs, develops,
and delivers custom training
programs for new hardware
and software products. Charles
formed this company after taking
early retirement from NCR.

coach for their Odyssey of the
Mind team and coach of the 7th
grade girls' basketball team.

Joe B. Stewart led his
Chillicothe High School Cavaliers
to their third consecutive
Sectional tournament championship
during the 1993 - 94 basketball
season. He has led his
teams to league or tournament

Cynthia Stout was inducted

of Fame Oct. 21 and 22, begin -

and ending with a ceremony
during halftime at the Homecoming
game. She was honored

Hoop Highlights
"The Green and White Tornado", a.k.a.
the men's varsity basketball team, had one
of the best seasons ever, earning 20 wins
and losing only once, to the University of
Dayton. Senior Fred Pierson was season
high scorer with 142 points. His teammates
were Herbert Ballard, Eli Barack, Tom
Blackburn, Paul Boxwell, Gordon Moore,
J. Garner Srofe, and Kenneth Weimer.

Global Awareness
Flags from around the world were presented
to President Marble by several international
students. 14 flags, including those
of the U.S. and United Nations, were hung
in Whittier Gym as an ongoing symbol of
WC's interest in multicultural studies.
The First Americans
The third annual International Folk
Festival stayed close to home with the theme,
"American Indian life and culture." The
eight day event featured demonstrations of
Native American dances, craftwork and
music, as well as discussion groups, exhibits,
folk dancing, banquets, and the first
Ohio all - state high school chorus and symphony
concert. Music professor Rolla Foley
directed the festival which ran from Feb.
26 - Mar. 5.

Years Ago... 1965
A Helping Hand
On the weekend of January 29 - 31
twenty WC students set out on a service
mission to the Appalachian community of
Kerby Knob in eastern Kentucky. Their
goal was to assist local residents in renovating
two, one - room schoolhouses, which
used coal stoves for heat and were without
running water.
In two days, the 15 men and 5 women
put up wallboard and cleaned and painted
walls, ceilings and furniture. But they also
found time for songs and games with the
community's children and shared meals with
the residents who worked alongside.
The project was coordinated by Barbara
Caruso and Tim Sword and faculty
advisor Vernon Wills, in conjunction with
the Council of the Southern Mountains of
Berea, Kentucky. However, several campus
clubs got involved by donating clothing,
school supplies, and building materials.
Although 50 students volunteered, there
was only space for 20 participants.
My... How We've Grown!
In the spring of 1885 only 16 students
were enrolled at WC. Today's student
enrollment exceeds the 900 mark.

Hersh Earns
Education Grant
Susan Hersh, chairperson of the education
department, has earned a grant in the
amount of $19,150, to fund an innovative
program which instructs Wilmington College
students how to teach children with
mild to moderate special needs.
According to Hersh, who has taught at
Wilmington for six years, if students with
disabilities are to be fully integrated into the
mainstream classrooms, there must be a
collaborative teaching between regular education
and special education teachers.
This is especially important for teachers
who will be teaching in rural areas since
these teachers typically lack the resources
of teachers in wealthier urban and suburban
districts. The program benefits Wilmington
College students because many of its graduates
go on to teach at rural and small school
districts.

Hock Gets Top OTA Post
ois Hock, chair of Wilmington
College's theatre department, has been
named the president of the Ohio Theatre
Alliance (OTA).
OTA is based in Columbus and forms
the cornerstone of theatre organizations in
Ohio and has approximately 500 members.
The organization is open to colleges and
universities, community theatres, professional
theatres, and children's theatres.
Hock has been active in the organization
since 1977.
The organization is the fiscal agent of
the Ohio Arts Council, provides development
workshops for theatre professionals,
holds auditions for graduate programs, and
sponsors nine regional high school festivals
each year.
One of the programs for which the
organization has received national attention
is its audio description program. Since
1987, visually impaired persons have been
able to attend plays and have a trained
narrator describe non verbal action, sets,
costumes, and scenery via a portable broadcasting
system. OTA trains the professionals
and provides the service.
The organization also provides a
children's theatre conference, publishes a
guide to Ohio theatres for playwrights, and
holds an annual conference for theatre professionals.

"This is an exciting time for OTA,"
says Hock. "We just received a grant to do
long range planning, which will include
reorganizing the organization and the board
of directors. It's a big job, and it will take
up a lot of my time, but I'm looking forward
to it."
Hock has been a faculty member at
Wilmington College for the past 17 years.
In addition to her work at the college, she
has been very active in local children's
theatre groups. The Belleville, Illinois
native is a graduate of Southern Illinois
University at Edwardsville and completed
her master's work at Illinois State University.

student workers at Wilmington College did
at their swine unit. They used 2 - inch - wide
angle iron they had on hand or bought very
inexpensively. Then they went to work with
a welder.
Terry Johnson, the farm operations
manager, estimates that for each 10 - sow
farrowing room it took 40 hours of labor to
build the decks, which they made to custom
fit their flooring.

Inmates Host Career Day

_L ^ early 100 inmates at the Lebanon
Correctional Institution attended a special
career day this fall. The career day, which
was open to anyone enrolled in Wilmington's
baccaulareate degree program, was sponsored
by the institution's alumni association.
Sue Hutchens, academic coordinator at
the prison, says the alumni association was
formed last spring and the career night was
the latest in a series of activites and fund
raisers the group has sponsored since its
inception.
"The alumni association," says
Hutchens, "allows people who have graduated
from our program to continue to have
some association with the college and to
develop further skills for employment. It
allows them to give something back to the
college."
Hutchens, who serves as advisor to the
alumni group, says the organization has
between 15 and 20 active members. There
are about 30 graduates from the Wilmington
program who are still incarcerated at the
prison.
Former Lebanon inmate, Michael
Herington, founded the organization and
the career night was one of his ideas. The
idea was to bring in speakers from each of
the majors the college offers at the prison.
The students themselves recruited some of
the speakers, calling on faculty members to
talk about their specific careers or areas of
expertise.
The evening began with a general session
on graduate school, library resources,
and job interviewing. The students then
broke out into subgroups on computer science,
business administration, and human
services. A total of 15 speakers were secured
for the evening's presentations.
Hutchens says she was really pleased
with the turnout. "Attendance was good. I'd
say we had about half the total student body
attend. And everything ran very smoothly.
This was really a collaborative effort, with
the association and the college staff working
together to make it a successful endeavor."

Operation Deep Freeze
he Biology Department is
currentlyseeking donors to support the purchase
of an ultra - low temperature freezer.
The freezer will make the storage of highly
perishable molecular biology reagents possible
and provide the ability to freeze tissue
cultures of cells for long term storage among
other things. This will strengthen
Wilmington College's research capabilities
involving undergraduate research.
In 1991 the Wilmington College
Biology Department extended its graduation
requirements for biology majors to include
a research project and undergraduate thesis
based on that project. Doug Woodmansee,
assistant professor of Biology, states
"Participation in a research project makes
our graduates more competitive for jobs in
industry and for admission to graduate,

Commissioners
Wi ilmington College leader scholars
took on a project to assist Clinton County
commissioners in understanding public
opinion on three key issues this past fall.
Sixty Wilmington students surveyed
approximately 1,000 Clinton County registered
voters on a new juvenile detention
facility, curbside recycling, and the children
services levy.
The telephone survey was conducted
from Oct. 23 through Oct. 26, and the
students presented the information at the
commissioners' meeting on November 2.
"The board of commissioners is very
enthusiastic about this survey" said Clinton
County Commissioner Rick Stanforth.
"First, it represents an opportunity for county
government to form a working relationship
with these talented student leaders. And it
will also give us much - needed public input
on issues of local importance."
The project was directed by Bud Lewis,
Wilmington's director of student services
and senior student, Christian Pfeffer.

believe that the requirement strengthens the
critical thinking and communications skills
of our graduate."
The funding needed is $6,000 which
will include the cost of the freezer and
installation of a special electrical circuit to
support the freezer's electrical needs.

Early Results
Look Good For
Phonathon
. he first three phases of Phonathon have
been completed with great results. The goal
for Phonathon this year is $70,000 and with
the help of 14 student callers this fall we
have reached 68% of that goal in pledges.
The student callers spent approximately
two weeks in October and one in November
calling donors to the Annual Fund. The
students called alumni and friends of the
College and thanked them for their previous
support of the Annual Fund and asked them
to renew their commitment for this year.
The student callers also gain a great
perspective of Wilmington College by being
given the opportunity to listen to the many
memories that alumni and friends are willing
to share with the callers.
Phonathon will start again in February
with the students calling past donors to the
Annual Fund and then calling alumni who
have been out of school 10 years or less.
This is a great way to update alumni records
and to obtain new donors.
Over the years phonathon has become
one of the most successful fund raisers for
Wilmington College. Be part of that success
by participating when your phone rings.

Cheryl Louallen has been named
director of financial aid at Wilmington
College.
Raymond G. Wojda has accepted a
position at Arizona Western College.
Wojda began his new duties as director of
public relations and development on Dec.
15. He was employed at Wilmington for
the past nine years as director of college
relations.
Ed Agran, assistant professor of
history, had an article published in the
autumn issue of Kansas History. The
article was titled "William Allen White's
Small - Town America: A Literary
Prescription For Progressive Reform.
The September - October issue of the
Soccer Journal carried a lengthy article
on Bud Lewis.
Ann Moore, director of advancement
services, is completing a year as vice
president of the board of directors of the
Ohio Prospect Research Network.

Clifford Hardie, professor of English
at Wilmington College, was a major
participant this summer at a two - week
literature conference sponsored by
Virginia Commonwealth University.
Steve Spirk, women's soccer coach,
has been named Great Lakes Region, All -
Ohio, and Association of Mideast Colleges
(AMC) Coach of the Year, after leading
the Lady Quakers to a school - best 19 - 3
record and a first - ever berth in the NCAA
Division III playoffs.

Sims Honored For Teaching Excellence
Sharon Sims represented Wilmington
College on November 1 Oth when the Greater
Cincinnati Consortium of Colleges and
Jniversities honored those in the teaching
irofession.
Sims, an associate professor of physical
ducation, joined the Wilmington College
acuity in 1978 after completing her
ndergraduate work at Alderson-Broaddus

Teaching excellence is a goal
of Sims and one that she seeks to
cultivate among other faculty
members at Wilmington College.
As a long - time member of the
committee responsible for peer
evaluation of faculty, Sims has
helped set a high level of
expectations and enthusiasm for her
colleagues.
As area coordinator for health
and physical education, she has
worked with her colleagues to assure
that student learning is given the
highest priority.
In addition to teaching, Sims
has also set a personal goal of
qualifying on the Ladies Professional Golf
Association (LPGA), which she is
progressing well towards.
Students Adopt Highway
As part of the Wilmington College
ervice Learning Program, 14 students
leaded out to SR 134 S on November 19 and
eaned up atwo-mile stretch of the highway.
The project is part of Adopt A Highway,
which is sponsored by the Ohio Department
f Transportation.
To adopt a highway, an application
must be filled out for the Department of
'ransportation requesting what highway and
low many miles are wanted to clean.
According to Erin Shelton, the site
oordinator, this won't be a one day cleanup
ther. As part of the program's guidelines,
le Wilmington volunteers are committed
to picking up litter four times a year.
In order to follow the guidelines, the
group is already planning two cleanups
during the spring semester. The first will be
in February with another to follow in early
April.
"The program is good because it gives
students an awareness of the environment,"
said Shelton, a senior biology major from
Sardinia, Ohio. "Anything an individual
does to beautify an area, is doing something
which affects the whole community."
The two - mile stretch, which extends
from Wilmington to Burtonville, has a sign
recognizing Wilmington College and its
volunteers for their efforts.
"We've had groups like Quest
Environmental, fraternities and sororities,
and other individuals get involved," Shelton
said. "Who ever wants to go, is welcome."
The Clinton Solid Waste Management
District donated trash bags for the students
to use.

George Bowman Remembered
By Students
W e studied under George Bowman for
four years, from freshman English in 1959
through Fred' s senior self - directed paper on
Robinson Jeffers in 1963, and were married
by him in the Thomas R. Kelly Religious
Activities Center on June 2, 1963. The reception,
featuring a cake by Kathleen, was
held in the Bowman's home.
Dr. George was deadly serious about
the teaching of literature, and was determined
that his students would enjoy the
great authors, playwrights and poets as much
as he if they would only take the time to read
and understand them. His essay examinations
favored open - ended answers, so that
students at all levels of dedication could
readily display their relative familiarity with
the material and its impact—if any—on
their consciousness. He also took great delight
in the subleties of the English lan -

George Bowman was chairman of
the English Department when I came to
Wilmington College in the early 1960's. He
was also acting as Dean of Faculty while
Graydon Yaple was in South Asia.
George was supportive from the
beginning. Connie and I had been married
just 2 weeks when we came to Wilmington.
George, and his wife, Kathleen, went out of
their way to make us feel part of the academic
community, as well as part of the larger
community.
George had strong opinions. He was
outspoken at faculty meetings. He was sure
he knew what was in the best interest of the
college. And he was willing to take on
anyone who disagreed.
He had a running feud with a member
of the math department. They disagreed
about everything. Always. Finally, at one
memorable meeting, George invited his

guage, and the nuances available in careful
speech and writing.
Dr. George's office was never a place
to just hang out, but he was always available
to discuss anything needing discussion. He
was passionate about his courses' subject
matter, and warmly welcomed student visi -

antagonist to a duel. We all waited. Then
George added: "A duel of words, of course."
Nothing came of it. But it was certainly
one of the livelier faculty meetings of the
year. As memorable as the time Bob Halliday
responded to a long diatribe by a French
professor with this request: Would you mind
repeating that again...only this time in
English?"
Those were lively times. James Read
had just been named president of Wilmington
College. For his inauguration he invited
tors seeking enlightenment outside the clas
room. He (and Kathleen) also provided wis
and compassionate sounding - boards for stt
dents' personal matters.

best student writers in several categories
The prizes are funded from the income on
very modest endowment fund. By way c
tribute to Dr. George's influence on you
life, and in his memory, we hope that you'l

course on Russian literature, George was
enthusiastic. Not many schools this size
offer Russian literature.
You will be missed, George Bowman.
Too bad that famous Duel - of - Words never
took place at a faculty meeting. Now that
would have been memorable.

'94 Fall Roundup
FOOTBALL
Eric Noble leads five Wilmington College football players who
earned 1994 Association of Mideast Colleges (AMC) first team all -
conference honors.
Noble, a junior quarterback, threw for a school record 3,058
yards on 221 of 398 passing. Noble now owns seven school and 13
league records.
In addition, Noble passed for
575 yards, the third highest total in
NCAA Division III history, in a
Wilmington victory over Urbana.
Noble also finished the season
second in the country in total offense
with 341.3 yards per game.
Of course Noble's favorite
target was All - AMC receiver Jason
Tincher, who set single - season
school records for receptions (85)
and receiving yardage (1,298).
Other Quakers to earn first team
honors were Barry Wulf, Jonathan
Gordon, and Jeremy Clay. Named

MEN'S SOCCER
If there is one constant in the Wilmington athletic department,
it's the men's soccer program. Wilmington posted its 18th straight
winning season under head coach Bud Lewis with a 11 - 5 - 3 mark.
The Quakers captured their fourth consecutive AMC
championship and Lewis was named AMC Coach of the Year for the
third year in a row. In addition, Lewis earned his 250th career win
this season and his overall record now stands at 256 - 112 - 25.
Jason Hyre earned AMC Player of the Year honors while Jim
Oberer, Troy Clawson, Matt Meister, and Ted Morningstar earned
first team all - league honors. Dan Trencamp and Jim Ehret were
named second team.
WOMEN'S SOCCER
After posting a 19 - 2 regular - season record, the women's soccer
team earned Wilmington College's first - ever berth into the NCAA
Division III National Tournament. The Lady Quakers dropped a 1 -
0 decision at Wisconsin Stevens Point in the first - round of the
tournament to finish 19 - 3 on the year.
The turnaround in Wilmington women's soccercan be attributed
to third - year coach Steve Spirk. Over the past two seasons Spirk has
taken Wilmington from mediocrity to a national power by guiding
the Lady Quakers to a 36 - 6 record, two AMC conference
championships, and its first berth in the NCAA playoffs.
For his efforts, Spirk has been named Great Lakes Region, All -
Ohio, and AMC Coach of the Year.

SPORTS
Sophomore Stacey Williams (28 goals, eight assists) collected
every award imaginable including: first team All - American, All -
Region, All - Ohio, and AMC Player of the Year.
JoAnne Ludmann, Alicia Hartzell, Crystal Raible (eight
shutouts), Leah Knife (four goals, six assists), and Dodie Setty (10
goals, 15 assists) were named first team all - conference. Janel
Wheelock and Susan Gose were named to the second team.
CROSS COUNTRY
The highlight of the 1994 women's cross country came at the
Great Lakes Regional Meet when sophomores Nicole Tabet and
Kelly McKinley turned in the two fastest times in school history.
Tabet finished the record - setting race
with a time of 19:36. McKinley was
right behind Tabet at 19:46.
In addition to the school record,
Tabet became the first WC runner to
win the AMC conference race.
Other All - AMC performers for the
women were McKinley, Sheena Smith
and Jen Aldredge.
According to coach Jim Boland, the
men's team was much improved over
last season. Averaging the times of the
first five runners, the Quakers were
1:05 seconds faster than the times of
1993.
Leading the Quakers most of the
Kelly McKinley
season were juniors Matt Combs and
Andy Ward. Ward finished second at the AMC conference race with
Combs finishing third. The Quakers finished second overall at the
AMC meet, which was held at Defiance.
With such improvement from both teams, Boland is optimistic
about next year because everyone will be back.
VOLLEYBALL
Bill Lent, Wilmington' s second - year volleybal 1 coach is starting
to see improvement in his young team. WC finished 9 - 20 in '94 and
were much more competitive against a tough schedule.
Early on, Lent decided to work on fundamentals and not rush
the learning process. Building
from the ground up, Lent is
developing a program which will
pay off in victories down the
road.
Two Lady Quakers, Jamie
Jacobs and Heather McKinney,
earned second team all -
Bill Lent
conference honors from the
AMC this year.
Jacobs led the team in digs
and finished second in service
aces and kills. McKinney led
the team with 5.7 assists per
game.

1994 Ail - Americans
In just her second
season, Stacey Williams,
a sophomore forward, has
been named to the NCAA
Division III All - American
Team by the National
Soccer Coaches
Association of America
(NSCAA).
Williams smashed
her own single - season
scoring record with 64
points this fall. She also
broke the school mark for
goals in a season with 28.
Through the first two
seasons of her collegiate
career, Williams has
scored 117 points (52 goals
and 13 assists). She needs 20 goals and 54 points to break Jane
Tuke's career scoring records of 71 goals and 170 points.
Due in large part to Williams' scoring punch, the Lady Quakers
posted a 19 - 3 record, captured their second straight AMC conference
championship, and earned a first - ever berth into the NCAA Division
III National Tournament.
In addition to the first team All - American award, Williams has
been named All - Region, All - Ohio, All - AMC, and AMC Player of
the Year this season.
Williams, who is also an outstanding student at Wilmington,
majors in education. She is aresident of Monroe, Ohio and graduate
of Lemon - Monroe High School.
J ason Tincher, a
senior wide receiver
at Wilmington, has
been named to the
1994 NCAA Division
III All - American
Football Team.
Tincher (6 - 2,
190) posted huge
numbers for the
Quakers, including
leading the country in
receiving with 9.4
receptions per game.
He also finished
second nationally in
receiving yards per
game with 144.2.

In addition,
Tincher set Wilmington and Association of Mideast Colleges (AMC)
single - season records for receptions (85) and receiving yards (1,298).
Not only could Tincher take over a game and post big numbers
(16 catches for 244 yards vs. Defiance and 16 catches for 262 yards
vs. Urbana), but he was also consistent, catching at least five passes
in all nine games.
The 17th annual All - American Team was selected by a panel of
26 sports information directors, representing the four playoff regions
in NCAA Division III football.
Tincher, who is a resident of Bellbrook, Ohio and graduate of
Bellbrook High School, is the first Wilmington football player to
earn All - American honors since Wayne Stacy in 1990. Jeff Johnson
was the last Quaker to earn first team All - American honors in 1986.
Tincher majors in education and is scheduled for his student
teaching during the spring semester.
The Wilmington College women's
soccerteam made school history this season
when they became the first squad to qualify
for the NCAA Division III National
Playoffs.
The Lady Quakers also posted a school -
best 19 - 3 record while capturing their
second consecutive AMC conference
championship.
The last time the women's soccer team
qualified for the national playoffs was under
NAIA affiliation back in 1985 and 1987.
