Story Time with 

Winnie the Witch 

This booklet contains story time crib notes for 

Winnie the Witch and Happy Birthday,Winnie! to help you 

bring these stories to life for children in the library. 

Here are some general hints and tips about running a story time session: 

Keep the session short. 

Read the book through before the event 

so you can anticipate questions. 

Introduce the book by reading out the title 

and showing the children the cover. Tell 

them who wrote it and who did the 

illustrations. 

Relax and read with enthusiasm and 

enjoyment. You may feel self-conscious 

but the children will enjoy your animated 

voice much more than if you read in a 

fl at monotone. 

Don’t read too fast. Vary the pace. Allow 

children time to think about what is 

happening or what might happen next. 

Make sure you show the children the 

pictures. Talk about the illustrations. 

‘What is happening here?’ 

Ask them questions such as ‘What do you 

think will happen next?’ before you turn 

the page. Don’t worry if children come up 

with surprising answers. Be positive. ‘That’s 

a good idea. Let’s see what the author says.’

suggestions for questions to ask when reading 

Winnie the Witch and Happy Birthday, Winnie! 

Most important of all: have fun!

TITLE PAGE: 

• Introduce Winnie and Wilbur. 

• Ask the children what Winnie is 

carrying (a spell book).

black. What rooms can the children see?

picture? In spreads 3 to 5, see if the 

children can point out where Wilbur is.

• Draw a delicious birthday cake for Winnie on the plate. 

• Colour in the rest of the card. 

• Fold down the dotted line. 

• Write a birthday message for Winnie inside.

Use your imagination to draw a lovely design on the 

front of the card – it could be a yummy cake, Winnie in 

a special birthday outfi t, or anything else you can think 

of! You could even write a birthday poem inside!

How to make your 

Winnie bunting: 

• Cut out the bunting shape 

• Add colour to it in witchy 

colours 

• Fold the bunting shape in 

half to make a double-sided 

triangle, then place this over 

your bunting string, and glue 

the points together 

• Repeat until you have a 

length of bunting.

Make a Winnie the Witch hat! 


� Scissors 

� Colouring materials 

� Elastic 

Instructions: 

� Colour in your Winnie the Witch hat. 

� Cut carefully along the hat outline. 

� Cut along the black line on the left hand 

side of your hat to make a slit. 

� Guide the fl ap on the right hand side 

through the slit on the left hand 

side to assemble your hat. 

� Make two holes indicated by 

the two circles.

Instructions: 

� Cut out a strip of thin card, long enough to wrap around 

your head. 

� Colour in and cut out Wilbur’s face, eyes, nose, smile, and ears. 

� Glue them onto your headband. 

� Stick on pipe cleaners to make Wilbur’s whiskers.
