First Grade versus Toombul at Bill Albury Oval -
It’s the coach here putting in some overtime,
“THE LESSON”
Wynnum Manly Gunners
Newsletter.
After an unbeaten start to the season, we faced our toughest test to date in a grand final rematch against
the Toombul Bulls. With plenty of tension still looming from the GF everyone was looking forward to the
challenge, in particular one L. Waters who couldn’t wait to catch up with some old mates.
It was a very special day for me, as it was my first game as Captain of the mighty Sea Eagles, about time!
Captain, Coach, Batsman, Opening bowler and Mentor, I do it all! Anyway back to the game. It goes without
saying that I won the toss and chose to bat on our home ground. After Lukey had been mocking Rabs all
week, it was calmer when he was dismissed LBW in the first over. Never mind Luke, I will get the clipboard
out for you on Wednesday night.
Prowesy hit a few out of the screws before hitting one to point for about 15, 2 for not many. Enter the best
sledger in the game (Brad Teece) who hit some quality shots on a difficult wicket. Teece and my tenth best
student (Rabnott) put on 40 odd before they both fell caught behind in quick succession with Teece scoring
38. I was in just before lunch with Trask and the team in trouble at 4 for 60 odd. A captains knock was in
order and we made it to lunch without any more damage inflicted.
After lunch Trask and I put on a few and we looked to be gathering momentum before Cam fell caught and
bowled. Benny Mac joined me in the middle and we battled hard, I showed him how to play the sweep shot,
and a few other things on the art of batting. I have to add that I wasn’t happy when the Bulls put two out and
tried bumping me, obviously have no respect “ I AM THE PRO – I HAVNT BEEN BOUNCED OUT SINCE
STEVE GOT ME 30 YEARS AGO IN THE BACK YARD”!
Ben fell just before tea, a bright future ahead, and well batted young star. Hollywood Harry Tyler was next
and as the bird would say ‘He looks the part”. We got to tea 6 down for 100 and something; I was unbeaten
on 70 odd. Quickly after tea Harry fell and I guided one off the middle to first slip. We scrapped to 250 with
the Neck, Adolf and Mal getting a few.
Not the worst from a scratchy start and a chance to get the bulls a couple down before stumps. In a master
stroke Frysy insisted I take the new ball and I didn’t hesitate. Obviously I wasn’t talked about at Toombul
training as I took both openers off stump. (Set them up with the out swinger and then boom, off stump removed!)
And that was stumps, match poised with them 2 for 20.
We turned up on the second week to see our home deck look like the Bruce Highway, I wasn’t happy. I was
confident we could still go through them with a few early ones. With Flo back in the team I was glad I had 4
balls still remaining in the over, he had to bowl me and I didn’t let him down, nicking off Australia A batsmen
Chris Lynn early. Dolph hit a rock at the other end and now we were on top with them 4 for not many.
They put on a good partnership for the 5 th wicket but when Dolph came back on he found the edge. (They
obviously didn’t move that rock off the wicket)
After Mal helped find a ball that would swing (5 balls lost in the swamp) I came back on and cleaned up the
tail, all out for about 180.
In our second innings Prowsey smashed them and Lukey jumped on the second innings band wagon crunching
88n.o. Flo hit a few and that was stumps, 2 for 150, another good win for the Sea Eagles. Special mention
to Presto for sticking around and having a beer after the game.
We played a one day game on Sunday at Norths versus Norths, and as I am not getting paid for this I’ll be
short and sweet. They batted first and got 200, after being 1 for 120 after 20 overs it was an awesome effort
to bowl them out for 200. Well bowled Mal, Flo and especially Harry (Dad I hope you got that on camera)
Tyler who took 4 for not many.
We got them fairly comfortably in the end with Flo, Rabs and Benny Mac all getting a few. Seven from seven
and a great start to 2011, every win means a pshycho song!
That’s all from me and boys get to training on Wednesday nights, I am the Pro and you will do as I say! P.S –
Mappers I will accept my bonus in cash and I think I deserve a pay rise.
Second Grade versus Toombul at Ken Mackay Oval - Match
Number 637.
This round we had Toombul at Toombul, a ground where 1000s of runs had been scored in previous
rounds, due to a flat track amongst other possibilities. We were greeted though, surprisingly, by a green
top wicket. The wicket was hard though and when Haso won the toss and batted we weren’t too discouraged.
Discouraged we were though by the end of the first over, with the wicket doing everything at pace...
neither batsman looked comfortable and Haso went early, snicking off , but Nova stuck around, albeit
amidst a bucketload of play and misses. He and hughesy made it to the first main break at 1 for 70 or 80
or so and we felt Toombul had possibly wasted a great chance to take some bulk poles in the early morning.
Special mention to Nova and Hughesy both who endured a very tough spell for batting to lay a sound
platform for us to build a good total.
A middle order collapse after the break though got Toombul back in the game and at 8 for 160 or so it
wasn’t looking good. Fitz and Deano resisted well, and Chappy rounded up the tail with some maximums
down the ground to get the total to a fighting 230. With a small spell of bowling in the afternoon we had a
good chance to do some damage before next week. We managed one wicket, with a couple of close
shouts not going our way. Toombul 1 for 48 at stumps.
Day 2 had it all. We took the field with 9 players, Nova late from an exam and Uncle Dave late from a
medical appointment, and they had the early morning runs flowing freely!! We leaked about 40 in 5 overs
and it wasn’t looking good, but Chap and Deano pulled them back in to build some pressure. Dan Haso
helped out in the field for an hour or so which was a huge help, and after we took a couple of sharp
chances we were back in the game. A great period for us after the break saw blood in the water for
Toombul, as they slumped to 8 for 130, but some good hitting from their tail ender kept them in it.
Chappy and Deano both bowled brilliantly. Admittedly, we clanged a handful of catches in 3 overs to help
them out as they clawed to 8 for 216 and things weren’t looking good. Drinks came to the rescue, as they
so often do, and Teecey, in the first over after drinks bowled, flipper LBW, flipper LBW to have them all
out 20 short to secure a great win for the boys.
An afternoon bat is always nice on the second day and some of the lads had a nice crack, with Teecey
making 70 and a few others with starts. Overall it was a really good win, and good to be on the right side
of a tight game, in my first game in 2s!
Peace, Ryleigh.
The one dayer versus Norths on Sunday was a good chance for us to build on our win the previous day to
make it a really good weekend for the boys. We won the toss and batted on a flat track. Some good early
bowling from Norths though had us under pressure with a few early wickets with runs restricted too.
Teecey built 40 odd, Smithy with another start, but we never quite got on top of the Norths lads who, to
be fair, bowled quite well and made it difficult for us to score. Some middle to tail order hitting enabled
our score to crawl to a very modest total of 194 after 50 overs.
Our early bowling spells weren’t too flash either leaking some runs early and failing to put any pressure on
the Norths batsmen. But, as we did the day before, our bowlers managed to reel them back in to build
some pressure, and after a dubious option to take runs after a deflection off the batsman at the non
striker, the momentum seemed to swing our way as the fielders found a voice and the batsmen seemed to
lose sight of their goal and plans.
We bowled well, took poles, but most importantly at this time dried up the runs, with good spells from
both Zeller’s and Teecey taking most of the credit. We snuck away on the Norths lads i think, and before
they knew it, they needed 7 an over for last 8. Leeland came back on to finish from one end and once
Teecey bowled out, Corbin had to finish off from the other. Some great fielding and bowling helped us
restrict their batting almost beyond belief, and 13 ended up being required off the final over.
Two 2’s off the first two balls kept them in it, then a single, then wicket, but an inside edge four to fine leg
second last rock built the tension, with Norths needing 3 to tie and 4 to win. Fuzz bowled a full rock to
his correct field and we managed to keep them to two and secure a fantastic 1 run victory and a great
finish for a really good win for the 2s lads. We are back in the 4 for the first time in a while which is great,
and we will look to build on this for the next round versus the competition pace setters, Uni.
Third Grade versus Toombul at Wayne Broad Oval - Match
Number 660.
Showing up at Wayne Broad Oval saw us greeted with yet another belter so of course I lost the toss and
we were sent into the field.
Toombul’s top order struggled against some very tight bowling by our boys but their skipper showed the
way with a good 70. Levi was tight as usual and Finnis keeps showing us why he is playing Third Grade
with some smart bowling as the wicket got flatter and flatter.
The end result saw Toombul way behind the par score of 350 with a tally of 238 and us required to see
out 5 overs late in the day. I jumped on the greasy pole and Levi and Rowey suffered as a result as we
were 2 for 25 at the end of day 1 with 214 runs required the following week.
Day 2 saw the same wicket and outfield greet us so we were full of confidence as we started our chase.
The Div 2 soccer player of the year went early and Fuzzy and I put a stand. I fell at 75 and B.A went at 100.
Ryan Poole provided a good cameo as our superstar fill in with 46 and we were 5 fa 164 with still 70 odd
to get. Meanwhile Fuzzy kept batting and batting very well.
SOC came in and with Fuzzy got us all but over the line with SOC being run out with a finger tip touch to
a return drive from Fuzzy seeing him run out at the bowlers end.
Pebbles came in and groveled him way past Toombul’s tally and then added another 40 to his ever increasing
Third Grade tally taking him to the third on the all time leading run scorers list.
Corbin wasn’t angry enough and Finnis batted well at 11 for the first time in his life!
The star of the day however, was Fuzzy with a great ton. He batted brilliantly all day from early when he
pulled their opening bowler for six into the swamp until finally when he was tenth man out for 116. The
maturity shown in his batting was second to none and with three scores to start the season he should now
go well in second grade.
To finish off a great game Lepetit and SOC claimed a couple of embarrassing wickets in Toombul’s second
innings allowing us to climb into fourth place on the ladder leading into our clash with University next
round.
Fourth Grade versus Toombul at Northgate 4 - Match Number 631.
Unfortunately, it was clear from ball one that it was an important toss to have go against us as the ball took a
huge chunk out of the pitch. With the ball popping and seaming, we lost a number of wickets to find ourselves
5/48 without having done too much wrong.
Brooky and the Shark steadied for us to take us up to 80, but it was tough going with the ball still seaming
and both soon perished. The tail showed excellent fight to push the score up to a respectable score of 147 in
the conditions. Particular mention to Woodsy for a solid knock which held the tail together.
The boys were confident going into the field knowing that we had runs on the board and the pitch was still
doing a bit. The Shark, Niwa and Gal all bowled well but were unable to break through the openers. Woodsy
came on and created a number of chances including the wicket of their more streaky opener. The day finished
with us requiring 9 wickets and them requiring 100 runs.
Unfortunately, we turned up the 2nd week to see a much flatter track. We still backed ourselves, however a
few too many loose balls and the lead shrunk quickly. Smithy, Niwa, Woodsy and myself all chipped in with
wickets that got us hopeful, but in the end they passed us 7 wickets down.
In the last 24 overs of the day we cruised to 4/110 which showed how much easier it was to bat on the second
day and proved to be a case of what could have been.
The guys fought hard to stay in the game, but in the end let them off the hook in a few critical moments.
Fifth Grade versus Toombul at Ian Droney Oval - Match Number
371.
by Ben "The Schnitz" Klemm
I was casually dominating my Xbox when Boyley gave me the call. He needed a sturdy young lad to prop
up 5's second week and he felt that I was the man for the job. So off to Warehouse I trotted for week 1. A
few casual overs and some time at the crease warmed up my shoulders in preparation for carrying 5's.
Some might say I'm the David Pocock of Wynnum-Manly cricket.
After a solid week of Facebook, Xbox and 12 hour power-naps I arrived at Ian Droney Oval ready to
dominate Toombul. Young Brenton Williams had helped set the stage by taking a tidy five wickets the
previous week to bundle Toombul out for 174. Some old blokes and a bunch of kids who don't really know
me, had me well placed at 5-124 overnight. Dave Edie managed to edge his first two pills of my day to fall
for a Klemm-esque 50. Haso and Boyley mucked around against the Toombul trundlers making things look
much harder than they really were. Boyley did the right thing and got out giving everyone what they
wanted. It was "Schnitz" o'clock.
17 to win with three in hand. I gave Haso a chance to learn from me by nudging a few around, taking lazy
singles and generally teasing the Toombul bowlers. Haso got a bit of a lifter, which I would have murdered
to the boundary, bringing "Humpo" to my side. 7 to win and "The Scnitz" cruising. Instead of sealing the
deal with two shots I continued to build the excitement. "Humpo" was taking blows all over his body in a
tidy little support role. I could see the kids on the sideline totally enthralled by my innings, it was magical.
Enough was enough. My memory is a bit of a blur, but I'm pretty sure I brought up the win with a cover
drive to the boundary on one knee. Which reminds me, I must call the groundsman to let him know he has
some pickets to repair. With the job done, "Humpo" and I had a bit of fun with the Toombul lads. They
reciprocated by bringing on some old bloke to bowl some wristy straight ones. I used the opportunity to
give something back to the sport that loves me so much and gave the guy a break by poking one to slip.
They loved it, and the bowler and fieldsman will never forget that moment. "Humpo" and "Bird" had their
moment in the sun taking us to 223 for a lead of 49.
After tea we had a bit of a muck around in the field. Blokes were begging Boyley to field next to me and
the Toombul lads were all over me. They clearly couldn't concentrate, giving "Bird" an opportunity to get
some sneaky poles taking his tally to 9 for the match. Haso snared a few and before you knew it "The
Schnitz" had orchestrated a collapse in their second dig - all out for 116 and a lead of just 67.
We had a bit of a dip at the target blasting to 2/57 at the end of play off just 7 overs. Had I selfishly
jumped up the order we probably would have had four overs up our sleeve but cricket isn't all about "The
Schnitz". It was great to hear my fans cheering in the dressing rooms afterwards. Being serenaded with the
club song by 20-odd blokes was a dream come true, for all of them.
Had a few words with the selectors after the match and Mappers and Boyley agreed that it might be disruptive
if I jumped straight into 1's. Look forward to lending Haso and the lads in 2's a hand next round.
Sixth Grade versus Toombul at La Frantz Oval - Match Number
119.
The boys were pumped with the return of BIG SHOW for the first time this season. It was a great start
when Gaz won the toss and sent Toombul in to bat on a very under prepared wicket.
We were a little light on in the bowling but if you wouldn’t know that if you saw the boys bowl. It was one
of the best bowling performance as a bowling group I have seen in Sixth Grade over the last few years All
the boys stuck to the plan bowling outside off and on a good length making them come to us. It was lead by
O’Hehir 3 for 15 off 15 overs and Darcy Richardson 0 for 4 off 6 six overs. Their opening spell set the game
up for us to bowl them out for 119.
We went into bat with 30 overs left in the day and wanting to put a big dent in the score by the end of the
day which we were able to do with some great batting from Todd Dawson and Darcy Richardson. End of
day one and we only needed 50 runs for the win.
Day 2 started and it didn’t take long for us to pass Toombul’s first innings total mostly due to the fact that
Toddy was on fire smashing the ball all over the park which included some big sixes. He had some great
support from Hamilton Jones. Just after lunch we pushed the score past 200 from some good lower order
batting from Frederickson getting 33.
We were in a great place to get the outright so I threw the new ball to the veteran of the team Kenny to
spin his magic and help us get some early wickets which he did with the very first ball he bowled. But that
was all the magic we were going to get for the rest of the day as we just missed out on getting the outright
by 3 wickets.
It was a great effort from the boys and a great way to come back from the outright the round before.
Sub-Districts versus Bracken Ridge at Gibson Park Number 2.
Wow what a game!!! I must say i havent played in a game like this in a while.
Playing Bracken Ridge whom were placed in the top 4, we won the toss and elected to bowl.
We bowled superb line and length which contibuted to mulitiple maidens building pressure like we have all
season.
This resulted in Bracken Ridge all out for 58.
Star of the show Christopher Taylor taking 5/6 on debut with his off spinners.
Yanuk Watapuluwa also bowled well taking 3/20.
Chasing 58 for a first innings win we somehow found ourselves in a hole at 6/51.
The nerves started to kick in at this point but with a solid 25 from our no.8 Tommy " Tendulka" O'Connor
we won first innings and were dismissed for 88.
With a 30 run lead heading into the second innings Bracken Ridge shut up shop and attempted to block
out the day.
66 painfully slow overs later we finally had Bracken Ridge all out for 94.
Special mention to our batting wicketkeeping and now bowling all rounder Ben Crew whom after harassing
me for 2 hours for a bowl came on and took 2 for 1 off one over.
Yanuk also bowled well again taking 3/6.
With a minimum of 6 overs left in the day we came out to bat willing to have a real crack at the 65 runs
required for an outright win.
8 overs later and some clean hitting and plenty of effective suicide running between the wickets we tied the
2nd innings in a thriller with 64/4.
It was a really good match, unfortunately we didn't claim an outright win but all of our guys played really
well and we remain undefeated this season.
Warehouse versus Macgregor Maniacs at DM Henderson Park
Upper.
Round 2 saw us turn up to the Billiard table that is DM Henderson Park, to play the first of the MacGregor
sides. Following in recent tradition, a motley crew was gathered, with a few ring ins and not an 80's hair
cut in sight, to try and reverse our early season misfortune.
After Gareth called tails on a two headed coin, we were sent in to the field to do our thing. Now for the
uninitiated, our "thing" usually involves a great bowling effort followed by a batting collapse and, then some
more batting.
Well this time, as so often is the case in Warehouse competitions, one team will "have a crack", and its
either hit or miss. This is precisely what MacGregor was up to. In any other competition the lines lengths
and varieties our bowlers gave, would have scored at least some success and a good tight scoreline. Unfortunately
this time, it lead to catches flying wide of the fielders, edges grazing the stumps and any wood on
ball saw it racing like lightning to the boundary. The pick of our stocks being Ben Klemm and Lachie Hudson
whose figures hid the real story of their efforts and commitment. However after a few hours of this, it
was all over with Macgregor reaching 295 off a few less than 50 overs.
We had an hour or so to see out at the end of the day, but as happens when we hear the words "see out",
we put our own twist on it and we get "Out... See?" 3 down see you next week!!!
Week 2 saw the skipper off with a sore knee and a few others off with other commitments, but once again
our fill ins filled in, and then some. After some inspirational words from stand in skipper, we set about
trying to put their bowlers on the back foot for a change, and it almost paid off, however we were rolled
just short of the follow on, despite some batting genuisness (genuisousity??) from our tail with Steve
Badger top scoring with 27, Manpreet flowing easily into the 20's and young Lachie Hudson's crisp hitting (
theme there anyone???)
We had an hour and a half to see out on the final day... 90 minutes, 20 overs... it couldn't happen two times
in a row could it??... It did. We missed out by 15 minutes, all down for 61 and another outright loss. We
played to a plan, as coach would have it... It was just THEIR plan.
Our bowling lacks nothing but a bit of luck here and there, our fielding is great, but as Gareth puts it, we
just need to put more value on our wicket (Culpritus Maximus... Biggest culprit ). We can get this turned
around, I really believe it
