There is a need for comprehensive courses related to Biotransport Education that can be
offered at the undergraduate and graduate levels. This workshop will allow efficient exchange of
teaching ideas between diverse institutions involving complex topics of biotransport. This will
be accomplished by having experts share their own successes and failures and permitting
questions by the audience consisting of students and faculty. This workshop will broadly
disseminate successfully proven methods for teaching this interdisciplinary topic to students at
the undergraduate and graduate level; thus allowing development of more unified teaching
material such as syllabus, textbook, and course documentation. Funding provided by the
Biomedical Engineering Program of Chemical, Bioengineering, Environmental, and Transport
(CBET) Systems at the National Science Foundation.
2011 RICHARD SKALAK AWARD
ASME JOURNAL OF BIOMECHANICAL ENGINEERING
Each year the Editor-in-Chief and the editorial board members of the ASME Journal of Biomechanical
Engineering select a paper that they believe is the most meritorious of all the papers published in the
Journal in the previous calendar year. The authors of this paper are the recipients of the Richard Skalak
Award, named after an early leader within the ASME Bioengineering community. The 2011 award winners
will be announced at the conference banquet.
