BATTLEFIELD
Scenario: The 2 nd company of Task
Force Tiger (TFT) is on patrol about 12
km west of Camp Foxhole. Due to recent
ambushes in the area, a restricted
operating zone was planned and
activated to guarantee indirect fires
capability for the patrol.
Mission: Contact local leaders and
clarify situation in the area.
Current situation: The company
commander is in a meeting with the
village elder when suddenly the patrol
comes under small arms fire combined
with fire from rocket-propelledgrenades
from the northeast of the
patrol position. One soldier is imme-
diately down and lies wounded within
the range of enemy fire. Because of
his exposed position, all attempts to
bring him into a safe position fail. As
soon as his buddies try to help him,
the enemy opens fire and bullets impact
all around them, whizzing over
their heads.
BATTLEfIELD
The Task Force is equipped with the
battle management system TARANIS ®
Battlefield and uses it to successfully
deal with the situation.
Location of 2 nd company: The 2 nd
platoon reports the ambush using a
TARANIS ® Battlefield standard message.
The commander of the 1 st platoon
measures the coordinates of the en-
emy with his Laser Range Finder
and transmits this information to his
TARANIS ® Battlefield handheld computer,
where the information is automatically
used in the Call For Fire
(CFF). With no VHF communication link
to his tactical operation centre (TOC),
the platoon leader uses the satellite
communication link to send the CFF.
TOC, Camp foxhole: With the report
from the 2 nd platoon, the commander
of TFT is already aware of
the ambush and on the TOC digital
map he has a detailed overview of
the 2 nd company’s situation. In realtime
after the 1 st platoon sent its CFF,
the reported enemy is displayed on
the map. TARANIS ® Battlefield calculates
which is the most appropriate
and available weapon system as well
as the required amount of ammunition
to achieve the desired effect on
the target. The result is presented as
KEy BENEfITS Of TArANIS ®
BATTLEfIELD
} Enhanced situational awareness
} Faster decision-making process
} Intuitive & easy-to-use HMI
} Suitable for command posts
down to single soldiers
} Wide bandwidth of communication
an engagement proposal to the commander.
He accepts the proposal and
automatically the mission is assigned
to the weapon system and the information
is sent to the 1 st platoon commander.

Location of 2 nd company: The commander
of the 1 st platoon receives the
information in real-time and informs
the company about the incoming fire.
After the first round was fired in the
camp, TARANIS ® Battlefield automatically
informs him about the exact time
of impact of the first round. The rounds
impact and the enemy is defeated.
The soldiers are able to reach their
buddy and treat his wounds. During
the artillery engagement the platoon
commander used a MedEvac 9-Liner
standard message from TARANIS ®
Battlefield to request a MedEvac and
receives the information that helicopters
are already assigned to this mission
and will reach the position shortly.
KEy fEATUrES Of TArANIS ® BATTLEfIELD
TARANIS ® Battlefield can be configured
according to specific requirements.
The core system is complemented
with the appropriate modules.
Intuitive & easy-to-use hMI
The intuitive user interface with large
buttons and clear display elements
make TARANIS ® Battlefield ideal for
use in critical combat situations where
time is of the essence and the user is
under considerable stress.
flexible configuration
In today’s broad range of operational
missions a battle management system
is used across various and often
changing command levels. As it is a
highly flexible system, TARANIS ® Battlefield
overcomes this challenge: It
can be administered by the user onthe-job
and can map any hierarchical
command structure and therefore can
be used in spacious command posts in
buildings through compact armoured
vehicles to individual soldiers.
fast & secure communications
TARANIS ® Battlefield comes with a
broad variety of communication possibilities
ranging from HF up to UHF
and satellite communication. Even
with small bandwidth connections
(e.g. when using VHF radios) real-time
information exchange is still possible
between users.
Situational awareness
High-quality, up-to-the-minute, tactical
images or videos combined with
a wide range of map information are
essential for achieving situational
awareness. With TARANIS ® Battlefield
decision-makers have a real-time,
role-specific situation picture at their
fingertips based on geo-tagged data.
MODULES
} Sensor Integration
With the TARANIS® Battlefield Interface
module any sensor can be
easily integrated by using a simple
XML data exchange.
} Joint fire Support
The TARANIS ® Battlefield JFS module
can communicate via Link16
and VMF. A ballistic kernel is also
included to calculate fire commands
for different weapon systems
(e.g. howitzers, rocket launchers,
navy vessels).
} Simulation & Training
The TARANIS ® Battlefield Trainer
can be connected to the simulation
framework Virtual Battlespace 2
(VBS2 TM ) to fulfil “train as you fight”
requirements. Different command
levels can also be simulated.
} Interoperability
The TARANIS ® Battlefield Interoperability
module applies the NATO
STANAG 2245 – which, for example,
is used by the German/French
brigade to connect to the French
army – and MIP Baseline 3 for
information exchange with other
forces.
} Navigation
With the Navigation module,
TARANIS ® Battlefield can trace
and classify tracks and navigate
through predefined routes.
