Cape Classic | Programme 2012
Music has many positive effects. It accompanies our moods and thoughts, gives us
pleasure, engages and elevates our artistic sense and brings people together by allowing them
to share a common experience that even transcends the boundaries of countries and continents.
Music is capable of forging a firm bond of friendship that unites peoples and cultures.
One outstanding example is the Cape Classic festival. The festival is a bridgehead between
Germany and South Africa, between the State of Bavaria and Western Cape Province. The festival’s
concept and the intense commitment of the artists involved are also having a great impact on
South African society. It gives young people an opportunity to experience classical European
music and seeks to arouse their enthusiasm for this artistic form. The festival’s educational
activities are the source of many positive impulses.
Western Cape Province and the State of Bavaria have been working very closely together for
many years. I am very pleased that the Cape Classic festival provides an enchanting artistic
accent to add to and intensify this partnership. It not only enriches cultural life at the Cape but
is also a very special experience for the artists taking part, whose concerts and activities in the
field of musical education lead to interesting encounters with an audience that is both curious
and enthusiastic.
To the friends of classical European music and all those who would like to join them, I should
like to extend a cordial welcome to the concerts and activities at Cape Classic 2012. I thank the
artists for their commitment and I wish the festival every possible success.
