Cape Classic | Programme 2012
Music has many positive effects. It accompanies our moods and thoughts, gives us
pleasure, engages and elevates our artistic sense and brings people together by allowing them
to share a common experience that even transcends the boundaries of countries and continents.
Music is capable of forging a firm bond of friendship that unites peoples and cultures.
One outstanding example is the Cape Classic festival. The festival is a bridgehead between
Germany and South Africa, between the State of Bavaria and Western Cape Province. The festival’s
concept and the intense commitment of the artists involved are also having a great impact on
South African society. It gives young people an opportunity to experience classical European
music and seeks to arouse their enthusiasm for this artistic form. The festival’s educational
activities are the source of many positive impulses.
Western Cape Province and the State of Bavaria have been working very closely together for
many years. I am very pleased that the Cape Classic festival provides an enchanting artistic
accent to add to and intensify this partnership. It not only enriches cultural life at the Cape but
is also a very special experience for the artists taking part, whose concerts and activities in the
field of musical education lead to interesting encounters with an audience that is both curious
and enthusiastic.
To the friends of classical European music and all those who would like to join them, I should
like to extend a cordial welcome to the concerts and activities at Cape Classic 2012. I thank the
artists for their commitment and I wish the festival every possible success.
Bavarian State Minister for Federal and European Affairs
“Music gives us the power
to heal the wounds of the past...”
Since 2005, Cape Classic has been raising money for non-profit organizations and
local trusts supporting social relief projects in the Cape regions by offering a set of excellent live
concerts of classical music in South Africa each year. The proceeds of this initiative are being used to
strengthen communities in South Africa and to help young and less privileged talents to develop.
Furthermore, Cape Classic promotes the cultural exchange between different parts of the world
by giving German and other international musicians a chance to play in front of music lovers in
the Cape region. The Western Cape has had a long and fruitful partnership with Bavaria in Germany.
Last year, we celebrated 15 years of partnership during the “Bavaria meets Western Cape Expo”
in Cape Town where Cape Classic had its own stand and 20 kids from Jamestown got the chance
to show their talent singing the Bavarian anthem. Being a patron of the 2012 edition of the Cape
Classic festivals together with my German colleague Ms Emilia Müller, the Bavarian State Minister
for Federal and European Affairs, is yet another proof that artistic and cultural events allow to
connect people from all over the world.
Playing and enjoying music together gives us the power to heal the wounds of the past and to
celebrate the joy and prosperity the future presents. I therefore encourage the people of Cape
Town and the Western Cape to take part in this wonderful event.
Education is the best provision
for the journey to old age. (Aristotle)
There are many different ways to
realise a better education for children. With
the donation of funds raised by the ticket sales
of our concerts, Cape Classic supports different
social projects in the Western Cape. We believe
that children are the future of each country
and therefore we concentrate on the education
of children. In funding worthy charitable
projects, the proper education of children is
Cape Classic’s highest priority.
For the last seven years, Cape Classic has supported
the Greater Stellenbosch Development
Trust in various ways. Cape Classic transfers a
monthly stop order to a private soup kitchen,
has built an extension building with toilets, provided
school fees for sixteen orphans in 2011,
bought sixty school uniforms and seconded the
initiative of the James Sounds Project Arising
out of this project, two pupils attracted such
special attention because of their extraordinary
talents, that Cape Classic took over the
payment of their study fees at Stellenbosch
University. Plans are still going ahead to build
a children’s crèche in Rondomskrik (Swellendam)
as there is no suitable facility available for this
purpose at present.
However, education does not always entail
only study. Education is also an experience.
Cape Classic endeavours to encourage local
communities to gain access to classical music,
as we sincerely believe that such music is not
only life-enhancing but valuable. The Cape
Classic workshops and its school concerts in
Khayamandi, provide pupils with an opportunity
to explore different issues in creative
ways. These opportunities offer a unique
experience of getting to know strange and unknown
instruments and of working together
with European masters of classical music. This
support for underprivileged children also has
a transformative effect on them, which will
surely have a lasting effect. We hope that our
music will open the door to magical moments
for all of them!
With all our benefit concerts of classical
chamber music, the special events in Khayamandi
and with our donations, Cape Classic
supports the development of an exploring,
enjoying and passionate new generation in
Western Cape.
The undoubted leader of the brass
section is the French horn. But when it made
its first appearance, nobody used it indoors
because it sounded too harsh. In France,
the nobility used the horn during hunts and
made up special codes to signal each other. It
was even used by the night watch to call when
there was trouble. Even though it is called the
French horn, it started in Germany and was
only later completed as we know it today, in
France – and that is why its called a French
horn. Some French horns are really two horns
in one as they have two sets of tubing. The
player switches between the two sets of coiled
tubing by working a valve with his left thumb.
One set of tubing gives a mellow, rich, deep
tone. The other makes a higher, brighter
sound. Once the French horn became part of
the orchestra, its shape began to change. The
tube got longer, the bell was made wider and
The Magic
of Music 2012 -
The French
Horn
it now has crooks (slides) and valves. It is the
only brass instrument with a funnel-shaped
mouthpiece. If all of the tubing were uncoiled,
it would measure over 6 metres long. There
were two different kinds of horns mainly used
in the 19th century, the natural horn and the
double horn.
Great care has been taken to find extraordinary
masterpieces of well-known and lesser-known
composers for exceptional instrumental combinations,
like piano and horn, strings and
horn and voice and horn. One of the clearest
explorations to be found on the tone of the
natural horn was written by Louis-François
Dauprat, professor of horn at the Paris Conservatory.
His charming Quintet No. 1 for
horn, viola and violoncello will be presented
by Cape Classic in our Courtyard Serenade on
the 16th February, 2012.
Cape Classic | Programme 2012
Mozart wrote four concertos for French horn, principally for the use of his friend, the horn player
Ignaz Leutgeb. Two of these famous concertos, the outstanding Concerto No. 4 (15 February)
and the heart-warming Concerto No. 1 (19 February), as well as the well-known ‘Romanze’ of
his Concerto No. 3 (23 February) will certainly enchant our audiences. After a meeting in Paris
in 1778 with Giovanni Punto, who was well-known as a composer and horn player at the time,
Mozart wrote to his father: “Punto is magnifique!” The audience of Cape Classic can verify Mozart’s
opinion on 17 February.
For us, it’s nearly unbelievable that in 1800 a reviewer of a concert in Pest, Hungary, could
write: “Who is this Beethoven? I never heard this name! Of course Punto - he is well known!”
In Vienna, Beethoven composed his Horn Sonata in F major in only two days for the virtuoso
horn player Punto and with piano for the two of them. Although they had no time to practise
this piece, they had to repeat it immediately on the premiere in Vienna and, still today, it
remains as one of the finest compositions of chamber music for those two instruments! The
lyric inventions and the mobility of the horn using all technical possibilities enthuses audiences
at all times and can be admired at our concert ‘Established’ on 24 February.
A contemporary and lifelong friend of Beethoven and Haydn, Anton Reicha is now best remembered
for his substantial early contribution to the wind quintette literature and his role as a teacher -
his pupils included Franz Liszt and Hector Berlioz. At ‘Under the Stars’ (22 February) the Cape
Classic audience has the unique chance to listen to one of those quintets, about which Reicha
himself went on to say: “Encouraged by the success of this performance, I wrote eighteen more,
bringing the number to twenty-four. They created a sensation throughout Europe!” It’s plain that this
was not merely a passing sensation - to the present day and into the next century wind quintet
players will be playing the music of Reicha.
Whilst Franz Anton Hoffmeister is best known for his activities as a music publisher of many
prominent Viennese composers of the era (including Beethoven, Haydn and Mozart), in the early
1780’s he was one of Vienna’s most popular composers in his own right. To try and summarise
Hoffmeister’s contribution to 18/19th century compositions, it may be said that they are all
well-crafted but only rarely to be heard. They are certainly well worth listening to! (24 February).
Some of his works approach the ambiance of Haydn and Mozart in their lighter moods and, for
this reason alone, Hoffmeister deserves to sit near the front of all other famous composers of his
time. The French horn is a magnificent instrument with a noble and rich sound. Dip into the
universal of its sonorous chimes and velvety tones, glory in every concert at this year’s Cape Classic!
renowned conductors, including Lorin Maazel and Daniel Barenboim.
During this period, Fischer had already started his studies on old instruments,
namely the violins of the Baroque era. Fischer has consequently
become a sought after performer of Baroque era music. He performed with
“Concentus Musicus Wien” under conductor Nicholas Harnoncourt and also
with “Musica Antiqua Köln”, conducted by Reinhard Goebel. He has given
Enthusiasm for South Africa and a love for classical music have always been the
main motivations for Gabi Zahn’s vision of Cape Classic, a festival which supports
charitable projects of the Cape region through “The Magic of Music”. In the
eighties, Gabi Zahn lived in South Africa with her husband and her four children
for four years. Subsequently, in Germany where she now lives, she worked as a
journalist specialising in cultural affairs, mainly classical music, where she wrote
reviews of concerts and interviewed famous artists. Currently, she is spending all
her time on the organisation of the annual Cape Classic.
Happiness depends upon ourselves. (Aristotle)
To celebrate the wine lands of the Western Cape,
To celebrate the classical music;
To celebrate Lust of Life;
To celebrate a Feast of all Senses;
And… to make our audience happy!
These are top priorities of Cape Classic!
It is my sincere wish that you will enjoy our concerts
of this current festival season and I hope to welcome
you back in 2013 too!
