Sister Kenny Foundation
2010 Annual Report
Restoring abilities,
independence and lives
Philanthropy provides
Sister Kenny Re habilitation Institute
team members the means to be the best
while improving patient care and instilling hope
in the lives of our patients.
B
Dear Friend of the Foundation
I know firsthand of the exceptional care that Sister Kenny Rehabilitation Institute (SKRI)
provides within our community because, 10 years ago, I was the beneficiary of those services. I
experienced a hemorrhagic (“bleeding”) stroke that caused partial paralysis on my right side and
severe aphasia which significantly limited my ability to communicate. Through extensive inpatient
and outpatient therapies, I have recovered many of my abilities and continue to benefit — as many
do — from the programs, services and research of the Institute.
Over time, my relationship with SKRI has evolved from patient to Foundation board member to
board chairman. In my roles, I have personally experienced and witnessed life transformations that are
indicators that SKRI is the leading provider of medical rehabilitation services in the upper Midwest.
As the chairman of the Foundation’s Board of Directors, it is my privilege to share with you a
few of the ways that your generous support of the Foundation has contributed to SKRI’s success.
• Innovative, patient-centered rehabilitative research thrives within the Sister
Kenny Research Center. In 2010, the Foundation committed $315,000 to
support the Research Center’s initiatives to enhance the care and outcomes
of persons living with disability. The benefits of the Foundation’s continued
investment in research will soon impact persons with disabilities — locally and
globally.
• At the forefront of novel and effective treatment, the Sister Kenny Cancer
Rehabilitation and Lymphedema Program is SKRI’s newest program, providing
optimal care to persons living with or surviving cancer. This program provides
seamless care in partnership with the Virginia Piper Cancer Institute. These
efforts are furthered by research conducted within the Research Center,
as clinician scientists develop rehabilitation technologies with the goal of
providing the highest-quality and most comprehensive care to cancer patients and survivors.
• Honoring the legacy of SKRI’s founder Sister Elizabeth Kenny, nearly 400 guests, including
many polio survivors, celebrated at the Sister Kenny Children’s Gala. Sister Kenny’s Children,
a play produced by Dorie Baizley, showcased Sister Kenny’s groundbreaking contributions to
the field of rehabilitation. More than 5,000 people attended Sister Kenny’s Children during its
four-week run at St. Paul’s History Theatre.
Within this report, you will learn about the impact of your philanthropic investment on
SKRI’s innovative programs and services, inventive research, patient-focused education and
clinical professional development.
You have wisely entrusted the Sister Kenny Foundation to be a good steward of your
contribution. Through this annual report, I hope that we demonstrate to you that your gift is a
valuable investment in the lives of those with disabilities.
Education and training enhances patient
independence to ensure positive outcomes
Continuing education and professional development have been hallmarks of the success of Sister
Kenny Rehabilitation Institute (SKRI) over the years. The Sister Kenny Foundation supports this
organizational priority by funding advanced clinical team member training, continuing education and
specialty certification for its team members. Furthermore, investment in patient education and training
that enables patients to achieve greater independence and function is a priority of the Foundation.
Established through funding from the Sister Kenny Foundation, Sister Kenny Grad School
is an education series for people with spinal cord injuries or strokes. Each session involves a program
expert who explores issues related to the survivors’ condition or recovery while teaching lifelong
adjustment skills.
Group discussion incorporated into each session leads to networking opportunities for participants.
“The opportunity to learn from others dealing with similar challenges and opportunities
is unequalled,” noted Cheryl Smith, stroke survivor and current peer visitor. “My educational
experience and volunteer involvement with other stroke survivors has led to meaningful and lasting
relationships that may not have been possible through general social connections,” added Smith.
A continued investment in the knowledge base of clinicians is also important. A high percentage
of Sister Kenny physical therapists hold specialty certifications in one of seven therapeutic areas.
These professionals have demonstrated advanced clinical knowledge
and skills in specialty areas such as geriatrics, orthopedics or neurology.
Brian LeLoup, PT, NCS, manager, Rehabilitation Services,
is one of many physical therapists who has directly benefited from
Foundation funding. “The Foundation’s grant helped me fund the
expenses associated with my neurology specialty certification. The
additional knowledge that I have acquired and reaffirmed, along
with my increased skill level, has improved my effectiveness as
a therapist,” said LeLoup. “The benefits of this certification now
extend to my role as a manager,” he added.
The need for continued professional education is critically
important as demands for specialization increase in the competitive
health care marketplace. In addition, health care protocols and
technology are constantly changing. It is essential that team
members stay current on emerging best practices to make the most efficient and cost-effective
choices to benefit patients and improve their outcomes.
“Continuing education drives better care because clinicians have the most current tools at
their disposal,” LeLoup stated. “It has allowed our clinicians to become better at what they do.
Also, continuing education provides us with an important recruiting tool to attract high-quality
applicants, helps with the retention of current employees, and, most importantly, improves the care
we give to patients.”
Regardless of the audience, the ultimate goal of all Sister Kenny educational programs is to help
each patient restore independence and ability, supporting a successful return to home and community.
Sister Kenny Research Center makes strides
in patient-centered technologies
Sister Elizabeth Kenny was a pioneer and innovator whose quest for excellence served as
a guiding principle in the establishment of the Sister Kenny Research Center. Sister Kenny
Foundation has been a constant partner with the Research Center as it has steadily expanded
its capacity with facilities and equipment, conducted and published research, and raised its
international profile as a leader in the rehabilitation research field.
The Foundation continues to be a significant champion of Research Center resources and
initiatives, helping improve patient care as well as rehabilitation interventions and technologies
developed by Sister Kenny clinicians.
Mary Radomski, PhD, OTR/L, occupational therapist, leads several initiatives as a clinical
scientist. In 2010, she conducted a foundation-funded study of stroke survivors that analyzed and
assessed factors contributing to their adherence to after-care rehabilitation recommendations.
“With our findings, we hope to build a basis for future processes that will improve patient outcomes
and minimize the risk of repeat hospitalizations,” she explained.
Working with funding from the Foundation and the U.S. Surgeon General, Radomski and
Assistant Scientist Maggie Weightman, PhD, PT, are designing rehabilitation assessments to
evaluate critical vulnerabilities of military personnel that would interfere with their successful
return to duty following a concussion or mild traumatic brain injury. Radomski and Weightman are
leading the team to develop a Mild Traumatic Brain Injury Toolkit that documents occupational
and physical therapy best practices for soldiers.
Radomski, a 32-year employee of Sister Kenny Rehabilitation Institute (SKRI), is grateful to
the Foundation for its generous support of research. “When you invest in research, you advance
far beyond the status quo,” she noted. “It sends a positive message to patients that the Institute is
always looking for the next best thing to help them.”
Research Center Director Lars Oddsson, PhD, concurs. “We really encourage clinicians to
engage in research and publish their findings. Foundation funding is critical to protect the time
necessary for researchers to prepare their publications. Publishing research findings is a long
and tedious, but necessary, process,” Oddsson explained. As a result of Foundation funding,
the Research Center has seen an increase in the number of articles published in peer-reviewed
publications, which is an important step in creating a culture of research and innovation, while
elevating its reputation at an international level.
The onsite Research Center creates a climate of richer engagement among team members and
gives the SKRI an academic touch that excites and empowers employees.
Philanthropy also ramps up technology development and translation initiatives such as
RxFunction, Inc., a technology company within the Research Center. The onsite Research Center
ensures that patients benefit from the use of evidence-based practices. “What it means for patients
is that there is continual development of procedures, treatments and technologies,” said Oddsson,
adding that patients are an essential member of the research team as the ultimate “end user.”
“The Research Center helps create a richer environment in which to work,” added Physicianin-chief
Karl Sandin, MD, MPH. “There is a qualitative excitement you can’t measure that makes
working at the Institute professionally satisfying — the Research Center is a key part of that.”
4
The Foundation continues to be a significant and
very important supporter of Research Center
resources and initiatives, helping improve patient
care as well as rehabilitation interventions and
technologies developed by Sister Kenny clinicians.
5
Innovative programs and services restore abilities
and help patients return home
Gifts to the Sister Kenny Foundation have enhanced the quality and scope of Sister Kenny
Rehabilitation Institute (SKRI) programs and services. Care given by SKRI extends from critical
care to the community. Patients benefit from care in the intensive care unit, through their
hospitalization and on an outpatient basis upon their discharge. Expansion of outpatient services,
offering more services at multiple locations throughout the Twin Cities and greater Minnesota,
brings rehabilitation excellence to areas in which patients live and work.
SKRI’s programs and services continue to grow and develop in response to community need.
One such program is Cancer Rehabilitation that addresses the array of rehabilitative needs of
increasing numbers of people living with and surviving cancer.
“Cancer survivorship is on the rise and the demand for a range of rehabilitative services for
survivors is growing,” added Nancy Hutchison, MD, PT, LANA, medical director of the Cancer
Rehabilitation and Lymphedema Program. “People survive cancer, but the quality of their daily
lives may suffer. The program can have a profound impact on their quality of life.”
“For many individuals, cancer is a long-term disease,” explained Physician-in-chief Karl Sandin,
MD, MPH. “Improving fitness, strength, performance and function are each important for cancer
survivors. Our goal is to limit impairment or activity restriction through education, training and
exercise. We help patients do more than survive — we help them
thrive,” he added.
Thanks to a strong commitment by SKRI leaders and clinicians,
as well as Foundation support, the Sister Kenny Cancer Rehabilitation
and Lymphedema Program has gained international recognition for
innovation and quality.
Many patients helped by SKRI are dealing with existing conditions
or injuries. Yet, more so today, SKRI is focused on injury prevention.
In our communities, there is greater familiarity with injury risk to
young athletes. In the U.S. today, concussions are one of the most
commonly reported injuries in children and adolescents who participate
in sports or recreational activities. Concussions are serious
medical problems with potentially permanent consequences. Sister
Kenny Sports and Physical Therapy Center has partnered with area
high schools to bring the ImPACT Concussion Assessment to athletes, helping them, their parents,
coaches and doctors make better and safer decisions about the optimal time to return to play.
Through the support of the Foundation, SKRI expanded the Prevent Injury and Enhance
Performance Program, an evidence-based program designed to prevent tearing of the anterior cruciate
ligament in teenage female athletes. Making treatment and prevention programs accessible and
convenient helps patients preserve or more quickly and successfully restore abilities and independence.
“Sister Kenny Foundation is supportive and connected to nearly everything the Institute does,”
added Institute Director Pat Tarnowski, PT, MBA, SCS. “The Foundation gives us a bridge to
greater resources to help enhance prevention and treatment options — through new equipment or
protocols. The Foundation is instrumental in helping us achieve our mission of making lives work.”
6
7
Through the support of the Foundation, SKRI
programs and services have been enhanced,
including the expansion of outpatient services,
bringing rehabiliation excellence to areas in which
patients live and work.
