sleep only in a blue room. Yet when the light goes out, a bit of magic is stirred
up. Pale blue moonlight swirls into her bedroom window. Then the night swirls
out, around the moon and into the universe, leaving Alice fast asleep in a most
celestial blue room.
Giant Meatball
robert WeinstocK
Amerry meatball is rolling a path of destruction through a small town. He
rolls over pets, petunias, and the library—where he refuses to shush. When
he rolls over the mayor herself, the townspeople know it’s time. Time to invite
Sly humor abounds in this charming, offbeat story that will appeal to
anyone who’s ever faced a bully—and, of course, to spaghetti fans of all ages.
A little rabbit faces one very bad dream
Little Rabbit and the Night Mare
Kate Klise n Illustrated by M. sarah Klise
One night, while Little Rabbit is sleeping, a very scary creature appears in his
dream. Little Rabbit is so worried about the “night mare” that he can’t eat
or sleep—and he certainly can’t work on his school report that’s due at the end
of the week. He makes signs. He builds traps. But nothing keeps that night mare
away. . . until Little Rabbit dreams up a brave and brilliant solution.
Kate and Sarah Klise have created a heart-meltingly sweet story that will
empower kids everywhere to face their fears.
Snoring Beauty
bruce hale n Illustrated by hoWard Fine
Everyone knows the story of Sleeping Beauty: A handsome prince rescues a
beautiful princess from a wicked fairy’s terrible sleeping spell.
This story is just like the original. Except for the sarcastic frog narrator, the
garlic-scented fairy, and—oh yeah—the princess in this book not only sleeps and
snores . . . she’s also been turned into a hot-pink and purple dragon!
Certain to charm and delight fairy tale fans across the land, this raucous
retelling is anything but a snoozer.
A Couple of Boys
Have the Best Week Ever
Marla Frazee
When James and Eamon go to a week of Nature Camp and stay at Eamon’s
grandparents’ house, it turns out that their free time spent staying inside,
eating waffles, and playing video games is way more interesting than nature. But
sometimes things work out best when they don’t go exactly as planned.
In this moving and funny celebration of young boys, childhood friendships,
and the power of the imagination, Marla Frazee captures the very essence of
summer vacation and what it means to be a kid.
For anyone who’s feared losing a best friend
My Last Best Friend
Julie Bowe
As Ida May begins fourth grade, she is determined never to make another
best friend—because her last best friend moved away. This is a doable plan
at first. Thanks to bratty, bossy Jenna Drews, who hates Ida, no one in class has
ever really noticed her before.
It’s when the sparkly Stacey Merriweather comes to her school that Ida’s
plan goes awry. Ida reaches out despite her fear but doesn’t say hello—instead
she writes Stacey anonymous notes. Soon their friendship develops without Ida
having to reveal her real identity . . . until she has no choice. And that’s when the
true friendship begins.
Includes a teaser to the sequel, My New Best Friend.
Juliet’s Moon
Ann rinAldi
War is turning Juliet Bradshaw’s world upside down. Her brother, Seth,
rides with William Quantrill’s renegade Confederate army, but he’s helpless
when the Yankees arrest Juliet along with the wives and sisters of Quantrill’s
is one of a handful of survivors after the building collapses, killing most of the
young girls inside.
When she’s reunited with her brother, Juliet finds the life she had previously
known is gone. Surrounded by secrets, lies, murder, and chaos, she must determine
just how far she will go to protect the people and things she holds dear.
moon, setting off a tailspin of horrific climate changes. Now this harrowing
companion novel examines the same events as they unfold in New York City,
revealed through the eyes of seventeen-year-old Puerto Rican Alex Morales.
When Alex’s parents disappear in the aftermath of tidal waves, he must care for
his two younger sisters, even as Manhattan becomes a deadly wasteland, and
food and aid dwindle.
With haunting themes of family, faith, personal change, and courage, this
powerful novel explores how a young man takes on unimaginable responsibilities.
Life As We Knew It
SuSan Beth Pfeffer
Miranda’s disbelief turns to fear in a split second when an asteroid knocks
the moon closer to the earth. How should her family prepare for the future
when worldwide tsunamis wipe out the coasts, earthquakes rock the continents,
and volcanic ash blocks out the sun? As summer turns to Arctic winter, Miranda,
her two brothers, and their mother retreat to the unexpected safe haven of their
sunroom, where they subsist on stockpiled food and limited water in the warmth
of a wood-burning stove. In her journal, Miranda records the events of each
desperate day while she and her family struggle to hold on to their most
precious resource—hope.
Two compelling novels in the Noble Warriors sequence
Noman
Book Three of the Noble Warriors
The safe haven of the Noble Warriors has been demolished and the Nomana
soon includes Morning Star and the Wildman. Yet Seeker, who is obsessed
with his increasingly perilous journey to kill the last savanter, finds his mission
placing him at odds with this new leader. As loyalties and friendships and faith
are tested, all three heroes must question: Who can be trusted? And what can
be believed?
Part adventure-fantasy, part love story, and part reflection on the themes of
Sixty Poems
CharLeS SiMiC
Here are sixty of Charles Simic’s best-known poems,
collected to celebrate his appointment as fifteenth
Poet Laureate of the United States.
CHARLeS SiMiC is widely recognized as one of the most important American
poets of our time. He received the Pulitzer Prize in 1990 for The World Doesn’t
End and was appointed the fifteenth Poet Laureate of the United States in
August 2007. He lives in New Hampshire.
Lavinia
urSuLa K. Le Guin
In The Aeneid, Vergil’s hero fights to claim the king’s
daughter, Lavinia, with whom he is destined to found
an empire. Lavinia herself never speaks a word in the
poem. Now, Ursula K. Le Guin gives Lavinia a voice in a
novel that takes us to the half-wild world of ancient Italy,
when Rome was a muddy village near seven hills.
URSULA K. Le GUin is the author of numerous short stories, essays, volumes of
poetry, books for young adults, and novels. Among her honors are a National
Book Award, five Hugo and five Nebula Awards, the Kafka Award, a Pushcart
Prize, and the Howard Vursell Award of the American Academy of Arts and
Letters. She lives in Portland, Oregon.
