CHAPTER TEN<br />

IN HER REARVIEW MIRROR, John Fallon looked so alone<br />

standing there backed only by snow and the deep green<br />

of the forest, Fiona had to swallow to ease the pressure<br />

in her chest.<br />

He wanted to be alone, she reminded herself. He’d<br />

bought Thunder Mountain Lodge because of the solitude<br />

it offered. It was silly for her to feel sad for him<br />

when he’d probably do a little jig the minute they were<br />

out of sight and he had his peace and quiet back again.<br />

Still, as she drove down the freshly plowed mountain<br />

pass, she couldn’t shake the memory of him watching<br />

them go, unmoving until she could no longer see him<br />

in the mirror.<br />

If he’d been glad to see them go, wouldn’t he have<br />

turned away as soon as they’d climbed into the van and<br />

she had started up the engine? Her heart cramped.<br />

Would he have kissed her with such desperation if he’d<br />

wanted to reclaim his solitude?<br />

She tried to remember the man he was when they<br />

first arrived, spare with words and sometimes curt with<br />

her or the kids to the point of rudeness. Somehow, she<br />

couldn’t quite conjure him up. Instead she remembered
