Chapter One<br />

For a doctor dedicated to heal<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> human body, he<br />

certa<strong>in</strong>ly knew how to punish his own. Jake Dalton<br />

rotated his shoulders and tried to ignore <strong>the</strong> aches and<br />

pa<strong>in</strong>s of <strong>the</strong> adrenal<strong>in</strong>e crash that always hit him once<br />

<strong>the</strong> thrill of deliver<strong>in</strong>g a baby passed.<br />

He had been runn<strong>in</strong>g at full speed for twenty-two<br />

hours straight. As he drove <strong>the</strong> last few miles toward<br />

home at 2:00 a.m., he was grimly aware that he had a<br />

very narrow w<strong>in</strong>dow of about four hours to try to sleep,<br />

if he wanted to drive back to <strong>the</strong> hospital <strong>in</strong> Idaho Falls<br />

to check on his brand-new patient and <strong>the</strong> newborn baby<br />

girl’s mo<strong>the</strong>r and make it back here to P<strong>in</strong>e Gulch before<br />

his cl<strong>in</strong>ic opened.<br />
