coffee and walked outside with <strong>the</strong> awkward roll<strong>in</strong>g<br />

gait she hadn’t been able to conquer when wear<strong>in</strong>g her<br />

pros<strong>the</strong>sis.<br />

The morn<strong>in</strong>g air was sweet and clear, rich with new<br />

growth, and she paused for a moment on <strong>the</strong> front porch<br />

to savor it.<br />

Noth<strong>in</strong>g <strong>com</strong>pared to a Rocky Mounta<strong>in</strong> morn<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong><br />

spr<strong>in</strong>gtime. She had <strong>com</strong>e to love <strong>the</strong> wild primitiveness<br />

of <strong>the</strong> desert around Phoenix <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> dozen years she’d<br />

lived <strong>the</strong>re, but this was a different k<strong>in</strong>d of beauty.<br />

The Tetons were still covered with snow—some of<br />

it would be year-round—but here at lower elevations everyth<strong>in</strong>g<br />

was green and lush. Her mo<strong>the</strong>r’s fruit trees<br />

were covered <strong>in</strong> white blossoms that sent <strong>the</strong>ir sweet,<br />

seductive scent <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> air and <strong>the</strong> flower beds bloomed<br />

with color—masses of spr<strong>in</strong>g blossoms <strong>in</strong> reds and<br />

yellows and p<strong>in</strong>ks.<br />

The Luna <strong>in</strong> spr<strong>in</strong>g was <strong>the</strong> most beautiful place on<br />

earth. Why had she forgotten that over <strong>the</strong> years? She<br />

stood for a long time watch<strong>in</strong>g birds flit around <strong>the</strong><br />

gardens and <strong>the</strong> breeze rustle <strong>the</strong> new, pale-green leaves<br />

of <strong>the</strong> cottonwood trees along <strong>the</strong> creek.<br />

Feel<strong>in</strong>g a tentative peace that had been miss<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>side<br />

her for months, she limped down <strong>the</strong> stairs <strong>in</strong> search of<br />

her mo<strong>the</strong>r.<br />

There was no sign of Viviana on <strong>the</strong> side of <strong>the</strong> house<br />

or <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> back where <strong>the</strong> vegetable beds were tilled and<br />

ready for plant<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

Maggie frowned. So much for be<strong>in</strong>g coddled. She<br />

didn’t want her mo<strong>the</strong>r to feel like she had to babysit<br />

her, but she couldn’t help feel<strong>in</strong>g a little abandoned.
