She woke from dreams of scream<strong>in</strong>g, dark-eyed children<br />

and explod<strong>in</strong>g streets and bone-numb<strong>in</strong>g terror to sooth<strong>in</strong>g<br />

lavender walls and <strong>the</strong> <strong>com</strong>fort<strong>in</strong>g scent of home.<br />

Sunsh<strong>in</strong>e streamed <strong>in</strong> through <strong>the</strong> lace curta<strong>in</strong>s,<br />

creat<strong>in</strong>g delicate filigree patterns on <strong>the</strong> floor, and she<br />

watched <strong>the</strong>m shift and slide for several moments while<br />

<strong>the</strong> worst of <strong>the</strong> dreams and her morn<strong>in</strong>g pa<strong>in</strong> both faded<br />

to a dull roar.<br />

Doctors at Walter Reed used to ask if her pa<strong>in</strong> seemed<br />

worse first th<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> morn<strong>in</strong>g or right before bed. She<br />

couldn’t tell much difference. It was always <strong>the</strong>re, a<br />

constant miserable presence dogg<strong>in</strong>g her like a grim<br />

black shadow.<br />
