RAEANNE THAYNE<br />

veered back onto <strong>the</strong> highway, unwill<strong>in</strong>g to admit defeat<br />

by giv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> so close to her dest<strong>in</strong>ation.<br />

Maybe she hadn’t fully considered <strong>the</strong> implications<br />

of her stubbornness, though. It was thoughtless to show<br />

up <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> middle of <strong>the</strong> night. She was go<strong>in</strong>g to scare<br />

Viviana half to death, barg<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> like this.<br />

She knew her mo<strong>the</strong>r always kept a spare key on <strong>the</strong><br />

porch somewhere. Maybe she could slip <strong>in</strong> quietly without<br />

wak<strong>in</strong>g her and just deal with everyth<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> morn<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

She grabbed her duffel off <strong>the</strong> passenger seat and<br />

began <strong>the</strong> <strong>com</strong>plicated maneuver for climb<strong>in</strong>g out of <strong>the</strong><br />

grabb<strong>in</strong>g hold of <strong>the</strong> rail<strong>in</strong>g so hard her f<strong>in</strong>gers ached.<br />

The spare key wasn’t under <strong>the</strong> cushion of ei<strong>the</strong>r of<br />

could remember, but she lifted one of <strong>the</strong> ceramic<br />

planters and found it <strong>the</strong>re.<br />

As quietly as possible she unlocked <strong>the</strong> door and<br />

closed it beh<strong>in</strong>d her with only a t<strong>in</strong>y snick.<br />

Inside, <strong>the</strong> house smelled of c<strong>in</strong>namon coffee and<br />

corn tortillas and <strong>the</strong> fa<strong>in</strong>t scent of Viviana’s favorite<br />

W<strong>in</strong>dsong perfume. Once upon a time that W<strong>in</strong>dsong
