With every s<strong>in</strong>gle fiber of her soul, she wanted to be<br />

able to slip away and leave <strong>the</strong>m to it, if only so she<br />

could start <strong>the</strong> effort of purg<strong>in</strong>g this image from her<br />

m<strong>in</strong>d, as well as <strong>the</strong> one she had just seen of Jake f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g<br />

such joy <strong>in</strong> his niece and nephews.<br />

She started to ease back <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> house, but <strong>the</strong> door<br />

squeaked as she tried to close it, and <strong>the</strong> two figures on<br />

<strong>the</strong> porch jerked apart as if spr<strong>in</strong>g-loaded.<br />

Her mo<strong>the</strong>r—usually so perfectly groomed—looked<br />

as if her lipstick had been devoured, and her hair was<br />

as tousled and disheveled as if she’d been stand<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> a<br />

w<strong>in</strong>d tunnel.<br />

Tío Guillermo wasn’t much better. Most of her<br />

mo<strong>the</strong>r’s lipstick appeared to be smeared on him, and
