184 DANCING IN THE MOONLIGHT<br />
romantic. For a few moments, she stood alone <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
kitchen, listen<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> music and sway<strong>in</strong>g a little.<br />
She pressed a hand to her chest, to <strong>the</strong> little ache <strong>in</strong><br />
her heart <strong>the</strong>re, for all <strong>the</strong> slow dances she would have<br />
to sit out <strong>the</strong> rest of her life.<br />
Enough self-pity, she told herself sternly, and went<br />
off <strong>in</strong> search of her mo<strong>the</strong>r.<br />
She walked through <strong>the</strong> ranch house, surprised by<br />
how warm and <strong>com</strong>fortable <strong>the</strong> place seemed. A family<br />
lived here, she thought. Not <strong>the</strong> den of vipers she’d<br />
always wanted to imag<strong>in</strong>e. A family that loved each<br />
o<strong>the</strong>r, at least judg<strong>in</strong>g by <strong>the</strong> photos l<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> walls of<br />
<strong>the</strong> hallway from <strong>the</strong> kitchen to <strong>the</strong> ma<strong>in</strong> liv<strong>in</strong>g area of<br />
<strong>the</strong> house.<br />
She moved slowly past <strong>the</strong> gallery, see<strong>in</strong>g Daltons <strong>in</strong><br />
all k<strong>in</strong>ds of situations.<br />
She saw Seth <strong>in</strong> one, handsome and <strong>com</strong>pell<strong>in</strong>g, with<br />
one arm slung around Marjorie and <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r around<br />
Qu<strong>in</strong>n Montgomery.<br />
In ano<strong>the</strong>r, she saw Wade and Carol<strong>in</strong>e caught <strong>in</strong> a<br />
candid pose as <strong>the</strong>y leaned on a fence rail<strong>in</strong>g overlook<strong>in</strong>g<br />
some of <strong>the</strong> ranch horses. She paused at that one,<br />
struck by <strong>the</strong> tenderness <strong>in</strong> Wade’s harsh features as he<br />
looked at his lovely wife.<br />
The one that had her stop stock-still was of Jake<br />
roughhous<strong>in</strong>g with three children who must be Wade’s<br />
from his first marriage. He had one little boy on his<br />
shoulders, ano<strong>the</strong>r younger one <strong>in</strong> one arm and a pretty<br />
little dark-haired girl hang<strong>in</strong>g on <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r arm, and he<br />
was gr<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g as if he would ra<strong>the</strong>r be right <strong>the</strong>re with<br />
those children than anywhere else on earth.
