Feel<strong>in</strong>g dusty and disheveled and about eight years<br />

old, she wanted to storm out <strong>in</strong> a huff and leave <strong>the</strong>m to<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir jolly friendl<strong>in</strong>ess but she wasn’t quite certa<strong>in</strong> she<br />

trusted her leg to hold her.<br />

She had to be content with fold<strong>in</strong>g her arms across<br />

her chest and glar<strong>in</strong>g at both of <strong>the</strong>m.<br />

She was fur<strong>the</strong>r dismayed when Jake smiled at her<br />

with a strange, almost tender expression.<br />

“Good night, <strong>the</strong>n. See you tomorrow. Six-thirty sharp.”<br />

Before she knew what he <strong>in</strong>tended, he stepped<br />

forward and planted a hard, fierce kiss on her mouth,<br />

right <strong>the</strong>re <strong>in</strong> front of her mo<strong>the</strong>r.<br />

Just when she was beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g to feel light-headed, he<br />

stepped back, shoved on his Stetson and sauntered out<br />

of <strong>the</strong> room. She could swear as he walked out of <strong>the</strong><br />

house she could hear him whistl<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>the</strong> bastard.<br />

She shifted her gaze to her mo<strong>the</strong>r and found Viviana<br />

beam<strong>in</strong>g at her. Damn. Just what she needed, for Viviana<br />

to take that kiss as permission to fill her m<strong>in</strong>d with all<br />

k<strong>in</strong>ds of unreasonable th<strong>in</strong>gs.<br />

“He is taken with you.” Viviana’s eyes sparkled.<br />

“He’s only hang<strong>in</strong>g around out of pity,” she voiced<br />

out loud what her heart had been tell<strong>in</strong>g her all along.<br />

Viviana frowned, plant<strong>in</strong>g hands on her petite hips.<br />

“Stop it! This is not true.”<br />

“Why else would he develop this sudden <strong>in</strong>terest?”<br />

“Not sudden. You just never see it before.”<br />

She paused <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> middle of roll<strong>in</strong>g up her pant leg<br />

so she could get rid of <strong>the</strong> pros<strong>the</strong>sis. “See what?”
