At last she slid under <strong>the</strong> cool and wel<strong>com</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />
lavender quilt <strong>in</strong> her bedroom, everyth<strong>in</strong>g ach<strong>in</strong>g.<br />
Despite her physical exhaustion, sleep seemed far away<br />
as she lay <strong>in</strong> her narrow childhood bed gaz<strong>in</strong>g at <strong>the</strong> softpastel<br />
walls and listen<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> ra<strong>in</strong> outside <strong>the</strong> w<strong>in</strong>dow.<br />
She couldn’t seem to force her m<strong>in</strong>d away from Jake<br />
and <strong>the</strong> afternoon and even<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> his <strong>com</strong>pany.<br />
How would she ever face him aga<strong>in</strong>? Bad enough<br />
she’d responded to his kiss aga<strong>in</strong> with an eagerness that<br />
mortified her. She <strong>the</strong>n <strong>com</strong>pounded <strong>the</strong> humiliation by<br />
blubber<strong>in</strong>g all over him.<br />
And as if all that wasn’t enough, she’d fallen asleep<br />
on <strong>the</strong> man. Literally. She must have fallen asleep <strong>in</strong> his<br />
arms. She could remember him hold<strong>in</strong>g her dur<strong>in</strong>g her<br />
storm of tears, and <strong>the</strong>n everyth<strong>in</strong>g seemed a vast blank<br />
until she woke and found her mo<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong>re.<br />
Well, it had taken <strong>the</strong> most embarrass<strong>in</strong>g even<strong>in</strong>g of<br />
her life, but maybe she’d f<strong>in</strong>ally ac<strong>com</strong>plished her goal<br />
of keep<strong>in</strong>g him away from her. She couldn’t imag<strong>in</strong>e he<br />
would want anyth<strong>in</strong>g more to do with her after tonight’s<br />
turbulent mood sw<strong>in</strong>gs.<br />
What sane man would?<br />
She was relieved, she told herself. If he left on his<br />
own, she wouldn’t have to keep try<strong>in</strong>g to bolster her<br />
sagg<strong>in</strong>g determ<strong>in</strong>ation to push him away. Heaven<br />
knows, she certa<strong>in</strong>ly wasn’t succeed<strong>in</strong>g very well <strong>in</strong><br />
that department on her own. When she was with him,<br />
she couldn’t seem to remember all <strong>the</strong> reasons she<br />
should stay away.<br />
She had wanted him to kiss her aga<strong>in</strong>. She pressed a<br />
hand to her stomach, remember<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> slow heat churn<strong>in</strong>g
