“It’s not arrogance to watch out for a patient and<br />

make sure she doesn’t overdo th<strong>in</strong>gs. And before you<br />

tell me aga<strong>in</strong> that you’re not my patient, how about<br />

watch<strong>in</strong>g out for a friend? Am I allowed to do that?”<br />

She opened her mouth to tell him she absolutely<br />

wasn’t his friend, ei<strong>the</strong>r, and had no desire to be but <strong>the</strong><br />

words clogged <strong>in</strong> her throat. They sounded sulky and<br />

rude and also didn’t r<strong>in</strong>g true.<br />

S<strong>in</strong>ce her return to P<strong>in</strong>e Gulch, <strong>in</strong> a strange, twisted<br />

way, he had be<strong>com</strong>e a friend of sorts.<br />

Friends with a Dalton? The concept shook her but she<br />

couldn’t dismiss it <strong>com</strong>pletely. Friends had been <strong>in</strong> short<br />

supply <strong>the</strong>se last few months. She had a few loyal ones<br />

from <strong>the</strong> Army who visited her at Walter Reed to keep<br />

her spirits up dur<strong>in</strong>g rehab, and a couple o<strong>the</strong>r amputees<br />

she’d be<strong>com</strong>e friendly with dur<strong>in</strong>g treatment.<br />

She had kept most o<strong>the</strong>rs at arm’s length, unable to<br />

bear <strong>the</strong>ir pity. After Clay’s defection, it had be<strong>com</strong>e<br />

second nature to shut people out.<br />

Jake didn’t make that easy. And, Dalton or not, <strong>in</strong> his<br />

overbear<strong>in</strong>g way he had been k<strong>in</strong>d to her s<strong>in</strong>ce she<br />

returned to P<strong>in</strong>e Gulch. She had repaid his k<strong>in</strong>dness<br />

with sarcasm and meanness at every turn.<br />

Maybe it was <strong>the</strong> exhaustion or <strong>the</strong> natural out<strong>com</strong>e<br />

of spend<strong>in</strong>g all day <strong>in</strong> his <strong>com</strong>pany, but she was tired of<br />

be<strong>in</strong>g bitchy with him. More than anyth<strong>in</strong>g, she<br />

suddenly craved an even<strong>in</strong>g of quiet conversation and
