104 DANCING IN THE MOONLIGHT<br />
He had kissed her, though.<br />
If he wasn’t <strong>in</strong>terested <strong>in</strong> her, why had he kissed her,<br />
that puzzl<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>in</strong>tense kiss she couldn’t get out of her<br />
head?<br />
In <strong>the</strong> four days s<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>the</strong>ir heated embrace, <strong>the</strong><br />
memory of kiss<strong>in</strong>g him seemed to whisper <strong>in</strong>to her<br />
m<strong>in</strong>d a hundred times a day. The scent of him, <strong>the</strong> taste<br />
of him, <strong>the</strong> strength and <strong>com</strong>fort <strong>in</strong> those arms hold<strong>in</strong>g<br />
her close.<br />
She couldn’t seem to get her bra<strong>in</strong> around it. She had<br />
tried to analyze it from every possible angle and she still<br />
couldn’t figure out what might have <strong>com</strong>pelled him to<br />
kiss her like that.<br />
“If you like him,” Celia said, yank<strong>in</strong>g her from that<br />
sunny afternoon and back <strong>in</strong>to Jake Dalton’s <strong>com</strong>fortable<br />
exam room, “you should do someth<strong>in</strong>g about it<br />
before some o<strong>the</strong>r lucky chica <strong>com</strong>es along.”<br />
Some o<strong>the</strong>r chica with two feet, no doubt, and a<br />
healthy, well-adjusted psyche.<br />
She was saved from hav<strong>in</strong>g to respond by <strong>the</strong> return<br />
of Jake and Raquel to <strong>the</strong> room.<br />
As she translated his f<strong>in</strong>al <strong>in</strong>structions for <strong>the</strong> girl’s<br />
follow-up care, Maggie determ<strong>in</strong>ed aga<strong>in</strong> that she had<br />
to figure out a way to put a stop to this ridiculous arrangement<br />
her mo<strong>the</strong>r had suckered her <strong>in</strong>to.<br />
She wasn’t sure what was worse—deal<strong>in</strong>g with him<br />
at <strong>the</strong> ranch, <strong>in</strong> his faded jeans and th<strong>in</strong> cotton tractor<br />
T-shirts, or watch<strong>in</strong>g him <strong>in</strong>teract with his patients, and<br />
<strong>the</strong> consideration and <strong>com</strong>passion that seemed an<br />
<strong>in</strong>herent part of him.<br />
Right now both situations seemed <strong>in</strong>tolerable.
