Dr. Joerg Mayer, associate pr<strong>of</strong>essor in the department <strong>of</strong><br />

Small Animal Medicine and Surgery, successfully passed<br />

all requirements for the European College <strong>of</strong> Zoological<br />

Medicine and is now a European Veterinary Specialist in<br />

Zoological Medicine (Small mammal).<br />

Dr. John E. Oliver Jr., pr<strong>of</strong>essor emeritus in the<br />

departments <strong>of</strong> Physiology and Pharmacology and Small<br />

Animal Medicine and Surgery, was selected as the 2011<br />

winner <strong>of</strong> the ACVIM Distinguished Service Award.<br />

Drs. Uriel Blas-Machado and Nicole Nemeth’s first<br />

author papers were published in the November 2011<br />

issue <strong>of</strong> Veterinary Pathology. Dr. Blas-Machado’s paper,<br />

“Pathogenesis <strong>of</strong> a Bovine Enterovirus-1 Isolate in<br />

Experimentally Infected Calves,” was co-authored by Drs.<br />

Corrie Brown, Steve Harvey, Jerry Saliki, Susan Sanchez,<br />

Amelia Woolums and research pr<strong>of</strong>essional Jian Zhang.<br />

The cover <strong>of</strong> the journal was a photomicrograph from<br />

Dr. Nemeth’s paper, “Clinical and Pathologic Response <strong>of</strong><br />

American Crows (Corvus brachyrhynchos) and Fish Crows<br />

(C. ossifragus) to Experimental West Nile Virus Infection.”<br />

Dr. James Moore was named a <strong>2012</strong> Josiah Meigs<br />

Distinguished Teaching<br />

and graduate levels. Dr. Moore<br />

Dr. Susan Sanchez, a pr<strong>of</strong>essor in the department<br />

<strong>of</strong> Infectious Diseases, was named a 2011-<strong>2012</strong><br />

Administrative Fellow. Dr. Sanchez was also awarded a<br />

five-year, $212,480 National Institutes <strong>of</strong> Health grant to<br />

fund the <strong>Georgia</strong> Veterinary Scholars program, which she<br />

directs at the CVM.<br />

Drs. Sonia Hernandez, <strong>of</strong> the Southeastern Cooperative<br />

Wildlife Disease Study, and Maria Viveiros, <strong>of</strong> the<br />

department <strong>of</strong> Physiology and Pharmacology, were<br />

selected as inaugural participants in the UGA Teaching<br />

Academy Fellowship Program. The program supports<br />

Dr. Ray Kaplan, pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong><br />

parasitology in the department <strong>of</strong><br />

Infectious Diseases, has been awarded<br />

board certification as a charter<br />

diplomate certified in parasitology<br />

from the American College <strong>of</strong><br />

Veterinary Microbiologists.<br />

Dr. Jessica Lawrence, <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Kaplan<br />

department <strong>of</strong> Small Animal Medicine<br />

and Surgery, will receive funding from<br />

the Morris Animal Foundation to study potential therapy<br />

for feline vaccine-associated cancers.<br />

Dr. Margie Lee (MS ’88; PhD ’90), a pr<strong>of</strong>essor in the<br />

department <strong>of</strong> Population Health, was elected to the<br />

AVMA Council on Biologic and therapeutic Agents<br />

(COBTA), representing Microbiology. Her term ends in<br />

July 2014.<br />

Dr. Michael Yabsley (PhD ’04), <strong>of</strong> the Southeastern<br />

Cooperative Wildlife Disease Study, was selected for the<br />

CURO Undergraduate Research Mentoring Faculty Award<br />

at the Early Career level for <strong>2012</strong>; he was also recognized<br />

by the UGA Student Government Association as an<br />

outstanding undergraduate instructor.<br />

Dr. Gary Baxter (MS ’88), director<br />

<strong>of</strong> the Veterinary Teaching Hospital<br />

and a pr<strong>of</strong>essor in the department<br />

<strong>of</strong> Large Animal Medicine, served<br />

as editor <strong>of</strong> the 6th edition <strong>of</strong><br />

Adams and Stashak’s Lameness in<br />

Horses, considered to be the “Bible”<br />

<strong>of</strong> equine lameness. He also served<br />

as editor <strong>of</strong> the new Manual <strong>of</strong><br />

Equine Lameness.<br />

Dr. Spencer Johnston, who heads the department <strong>of</strong><br />

Small Animal Medicine and Surgery, served as co-editor<br />

<strong>of</strong> the new Veterinary Surgery: Small Animal which focuses<br />

on surgical principles and procedures. Faculty in the<br />
