Shelter Medicine at UGA
Shelter medicine is a growing specialty in veterinary
medicine and students at UGA have been showing
interest in such a program for several years. A studentrun
Shelter Medicine Symposium has been held annually
at the CVM since 2009. These seminars allow shelter
medicine professionals, DVMs and students to hear
from speakers in various areas of shelter medicine. In
addition, they are free and open to the local animal
sheltering community, providing a forum to spread new
information and exchange ideas. For more information
on the annual Shelter Medicine Symposium, contact
Heather Tucker at hntucker@uga.edu
Dr. Janet Martin joined the CVM in 2011, and
is the faculty adviser for the Shelter Medicine club.
Martin researched other schools with similar programs,
then she spoke with numerous members of the CVM
community, both faculty and students, to gauge the
interest level and was met with great enthusiasm. Martin
says that she is greatly encouraged by the excitement
and interest students have shown, and is looking
forward to creating many more opportunities for
them to enhance their understanding of their roles as
veterinarians in the community.
