Cardiology Service Features Expanded<br />

Procedures<br />

The Cardiology Service at the UGA<br />

Veterinary Teaching Hospital (UGA<br />

VTH) now <strong>of</strong>fers several interventional<br />

procedures for congenital heart disease.<br />

These procedures have been made<br />

possible by the addition <strong>of</strong> a new<br />

fluoroscopy imaging system introduced to<br />

the hospital in 2011.<br />

The new procedures include:<br />

Balloon Valvuloplasty (BVP)<br />

Patent Ductus Arteriosus (PDA)<br />

Occlusion<br />

Heartworm Extraction<br />

Pacemaker Implantation<br />

Electrical Cardioversion<br />

The introduction <strong>of</strong> these procedures<br />

positions the UGA VTH as <strong>Georgia</strong>’s most<br />

comprehensive small animal cardiology<br />

care center.<br />

Emergency & Critical Care Service Now<br />

Offers Continuous Renal Replacement<br />

Therapy (CRRT)<br />

The UGA VTH is now the only veterinary<br />

hospital in <strong>Georgia</strong> <strong>of</strong>fering Continuous<br />

Renal Replacement Therapy (CRRT), or<br />

hem<strong>of</strong>iltration/hemodialysis services, with<br />

its recent purchase <strong>of</strong> a Gambro Prisma.<br />

CRRT is primarily used to treat acute<br />

renal failure that is unresponsive to<br />

traditional treatment, especially when<br />

accompanied by oliguria/anuria or fluid<br />

overload.<br />

The new services are administered by<br />

the VTH’s two critical care doctors, Dr.<br />

Amie Koenig and Dr. Benjamin Brainard,<br />

along with the VTH’s staff <strong>of</strong> veterinary<br />

technicians and critical care residents. Dr.<br />

Koenig is board-certified in emergency/<br />

critical care and internal medicine; Dr.<br />

Brainard is board-certified in emergency/<br />

critical care and anesthesia.<br />

Returns!<br />

After a hiatus, the VTH’s popular Picture<br />

Your Pet Photo Contest is returning. Any<br />

VTH or Community Practice Clinic (CPC)<br />

client is invited to submit their pet’s photo,<br />

along with a brief written description.<br />

Photos will be accepted through August<br />

31 and winners will be announced<br />

October 1. The winning pictures will be<br />

displayed in the VTH.<br />
