Alabama Consolidated Coal CBt, Iron Co.
Following is a statement regarding the affairs
of the Alabama Consolidated Coal & Iron Co.,
which has just passed from Eouthern to Northern
control:
The company was incorporated under the laws
of New Jersey in 1899, and owns and operates
several iron and coal properties in the neighborhood
of Birmingham. Ala. The company's output
per annum is from 150,000 to 180,000 tons, its output
of coke from 250.000 to 275,000 tons and its
output of coal from 600,000 to 650,000 tons. The
acreage of the company's properties is as follows:
Ore lands 10,460 acres; coal lands 35,950 acres and
timber lands 15.749 acres.
Since its organization the conipany has spent
$1,400,000 for improvements designed to increase
the capacity of its plants and reduce the cost of its
products. Of this expenditure. $500,000 was supplied
by a bond issue, and the balance was taken
out of earnings. The development policy of the
company has resulted in the following changes in
the four years since it was organized:

STRIKES IN FRANCE DURING 1903.
There were 567 strikes in France in 1903 against
512 in 1902. In 416 cases in 1903 the strikers were
organized. Ten unions were organized during
strikes, and three were dissolved in consequence
of strikes. The strikers were successful in 122
cases, involving 12,526 men; 222 strikes were settled
by adjustment, involving 89,736 men; 223
strikes, involving 20.889 men. failed; 10 strikes
lasted more than one hundred days.
In 231 cases of strikes occasioned by demands
for increased wages. 28.508 men lost 531,318 days
of labor, or wages to the amount of $355,626, equal
to $12.47 per capita. After three hundred days of
work, the gross profit accruing to these strikers
would be $418,613, or a net profit of $2.21 for each
striker.
Connellsville Coke Field Purchase.
What is said to be the last strip of Connellsville
coking coal has been taken over by the H. C. Frick
Coal & Coke Co. It embraces 1,000 acres near
Uniontown, North and South Union and George
townships. These holdings belonged to J. V.
Thompson, of Uniontown. Another strip of coal
land containing 83 acres, located in the Klondike
region, and the undivided interest in the Sharon
Coke Co., also held by Mr. Thompson, were purchased
by the Frick company. Included in the
deal were 100 coke ovens. The purchase price
was approximately $900,000. The H. C. Frick
Coal & Coke Co. now holds 42,000 acres of unworked
purely Connellsville coking coal. Besides
this the company owns nearly 25,000 acres
of coal land in the Klondike region.
