The core shown in the accompanying photograph was cut at Willis Branch, Fayette county,
W. Va. It measures 7 feet 2 inches in diameter and was taken from a depth of over 650 feet
from the surface. The drill that cut this core, without using black diamonds, was a Davis Calyx,
which uses chilled shot, fed through the drill rods. Owing to its construction it can penetrate
any formation either hard or soft.
CALENDARS.
Intrinsic beauty and artistic merit in the typography
and illustration of commercial literature
is no novelty, but this year's holiday productions
and particularly the calendars received by THE
COAL TRADE BULLETIN, deserve credit for superior
excellence. Lack of space prevents the individual
acknowledgment of all the handsome calendars
received.
An especially handsome and elaborate calendar
is that of the Pittsburgh Coal Co. The calendar
itself, which comprises only a small part of the
production, covers two-thirds of the front page
and is surrounded by an ornamental border showing
the flags of all nations. The second leaf contains
an up-to-date map of Pennsylvania and a
large amount of statistical information. The two
remaining sheets carry separate maps of the
United States and its possessions and of the
world, together with valuable tables of statistics
and general information.
The Morgan-Gardner Electric Co. of Chicago, has
issued a calendar the groundwork of which is
from the painting of the Old Mill at Bray. It is
in black and white and is extremely pleasing in
effect.
The calendar of the Wagner-Palmros Co. of
Fairmont, W. Va., is an artistic production in
colors, the conception of which reflects credit on
the designer.
An odd but attractive Christmas card is that
issued by the New Pittsburgh Coal Co. It accompanied
a circular announcing the original billing
places of genuine thick-vein Hocking coal, and
guaranteeing the genuineness of any coal billed by
the company or its agencies.
It is announced at Birmingham, England, that
Japanese agents have arranged nine more contracts
for Welsh coal, aggregating 30,000 tons, for
shipment during January. The agents have also
inquired for a similar quantity for shipment by
the end of March, it is said.
