ACREAGE MINED.—During the year there were
excavated 3,967.9 acres of coal.
In the past eight years the mines of the state
have depleted the coal deposits by 22,316.2 acres
as shown below:
Total acreage for the eight years from 1897 is
as follows:
1897 1,733.9 Acres.
1898 2,184.5
1899 2,361.2
1900 2,638.8
1901 2,854.6
1902 3,353
1903 3,222.3
1904 3,967.9
Total 22,316.2 Acres.
ACCIDENTS IN MINES.—During the year there
have been no great disasters at the mines in the
state, a statement which it is a great pleasure
to be able to make. There were, however, a number
of accidents, which are always incident to
the operation of coal mines. A very large percentage
of the accidents were due directly to
carelessness on the part of the persons injured
or killed. A personal investigation into a number
of fatal accidents would almost lead to the
belief that they were deliberate suicides. By
causes the fatalities were: by falls of roof, 95;
explosions of gas, 3; mine cars, 22; and by all
other causes, 20; a total of 140 fatalities.
Of the 140 fatal accidents, 123 occurred within
and 17 without the mines, and of 211 non-fatalities,
191 were inside and 20 outside of the mines.
For each 295 persons employed within the
mines of the state in 1904, one employe lost his
life by accident, or for each 1,000 employes inside
3.38 persons were killed by accident, this being
1.44 less than in 1903.
The greatest number of accidents are caused
by falls of roof within the mines, and until
greater care is exercised within the mines there
will be no abatement in the number of fatalities
from this cause.
