New Theory On Coal Formation.
In a lecture, recently, before the employes of
the Lehigh Valley Coal Co., J. Bennett Smith
stated that it was his belief that coal was formed
from a vegetable which grew on the water and
then sank to the bottom. This process, he said,
went on year after year, each succeeding layer of
vegetable formation adding to the thickness of the
seams of coal. He accounted for the difference
in the coal in different parts of the country by
stating that in certain localities this mass of
vegetable matter was subject to immense pressure
and great heat, so that the volatile matter was
driven out of it, this leaving what is now known
as anthracite coal. In other parts of the coal
fields the pressure and heat were not so great and
in these parts the volatile matter still remains and
forms bituminous coal.
