Indictments In Harwick Mine Case.
True bills were returned on March 14 by the
Allegheny county, Pa., grand jury, charging Mine
Inspector F. W. Cunningham and Superintendent
Wilfred Sowden, of the Harwick coal mine, with
involuntary manslaughter. Bills charging both
men with murder were ignored. The indictments
grew out of the explosions in the Harwick mine
on January 25, 1904, in which 187 men lost their
lives. It is alleged that the accident was the
result of an explosion caused by a blow-out shot;
that the explosion ignited gas and coal dust in
the mine, which were allowed to remain there
because of ice stopping the mine ventilation, and
that this ice had stopped the ventilation on account
of the negligence of Mine Foreman George
Brown, Fire Boss Joseph Bordon and the defendants.
Inspector Cunningham is involved because
the Harwick mine is located in his district.
