It is estimated by experts that the area of Ameri
can coal fields, at present open to mining, is more
than five times as great as that of the coal fields
of England, France. Germany and Belgium; the
great coal producing countries of Europe. While
practically all the available coal areas of those
countries have been opened to mining, ours have
scarcely been estimated. When we consider that
coal is one of the great motive powers in the
manufacturing world it is evident that this immense
wealth of coal will be of such an advantage
to the United States as to be beyond any man's
calculation.
The Fentress Coal & Coke Co., recently organized
with Gen. John T. Wilder, pension agent of
Knoxville. Tenn., is preparing to make extensive
developments at Wilder, Tenn.. on the Tennessee
Central railroad. The company owns 10,000 acres
of land at Wilder and will open several mines
with a capacity of 25 cars a day. The company
is also preparing to develop the timber property
of that region, large amounts of timber being
owned by the Fentress Coal & Coke Co.
'I'he Lambert shaft of the H. C. Frick Coke Co.
claims to hold the record for the fastest hoisting
of coal from a vertical shaft that has yet been
done in the Pittsburgh district. Recently in a half
day's operation 575 mine cars were raised from a
depth of 600 feet or at a rate of more than 100
mine cars an hour. During the time the record
was being made the hoisting machinery was
blocked twice for the space of ten minutes each
time.
A meeting of the stockholders of the Bessemer
Coal & Coke Co. has been called for December 30,
to vote on resolutions passed by the board of
directors to change the general offices of the company
from Johnstown. Pa., to Pittsburgh, and to
increase the concern's indebtedness from $50,000 to
$200,000; also to authorize a bond issue of $200,000.
The A. R. Budd coal mines at Webster, Pa., have
been sold to the Youghiogheny & Ohio Coal Co., of
Pittsburgh. The consideration is said to have
been in the neighborhood of $250,OOo. The property
contains 350 acres of coal with a frontage on
the Monongahela river of 2,100 feet. The capacity
of the working mines is said to be 1.000 tons daily.
An action has been brought by the Clyde Coal
Co. to recover $62,094.55 from the Pittsburgh &
Lake Erie Railway Co. for alleged violation of
an agreement. The statement filed asserts that
the Clyde Conipany has lost the amount asked for
by failure of the railroad to remove its coal from
Bunola, on the Monongahela river.
Arturo Longega, William Beckman, the latter
of Parral, Ariz., and others have just acquired
title to 25,000 acres of coal land 25 miles West of
Salinas, Coahuila, Mex., and the development of
the property at once is planned. Considerable
machinery, including engines, boilers and hoists,
are on the ground.
The Merchant's Coal Co., of West Virginia, called
a meeting of stockholders for November 30 at its
main office in Baltimore to consider a resolution
providing for enlarging the corporate powers of
the organization and authorizing it to hold and
own additional land in West Virginia.
The Boyle Coal Co. has sold its mines and holdings
at Hilliards, on the Pittsburgh, Bessemer &
Lake Erie railroad to a company composed of
Harry and James Hamilton, of Hilliards; Row
and Miller, of Uniontown, and others. The consideration
is $18,000.
Massillon (O.) coal operators have advanced the
price of 114-inch screen coal from $2 to $2.25 a
ton at the mine. The new rate will become effective
December 1. Prices of other grades of coal
have been increased in proportion.
