Slaves and Character Levels: <strong>The</strong> prices given above<br />
as base cost for slaves do not reflect the additional cost<br />
of purchasing a slave with multiple character levels. <strong>The</strong><br />
value of a slave with character levels is immediately<br />
obvious if the slave is to be used as a gladiator or as a<br />
soldier, but they are equally valuable in other uses as well.<br />
For example, a concubine or domestic servant with a few<br />
levels in the fighter class can also function as a bodyguard.<br />
Consequently, a slave is more expensive if he has multiple<br />
character levels at the time of purchase. For every character<br />
level a slave possesses beyond the first, the cost of the slave<br />
increases by 25 percent. This is calculated over again at<br />
each level, meaning that the increase of 25 percent will be<br />
higher at each successive level.<br />
Galtharis na’Dwurn had come to the bustling slave<br />
market to purchase three slaves for three entirely<br />
different purposes. He planned an expansion on his<br />
home, for which he required a slave with knowledge of<br />

for sale this day. He purchased a trained deep gnome<br />
with ranks in Knowledge (engineering and architecture)<br />
for 300 gp (50 gp base cost + 100% base (50 gp) for<br />
a skilled gnome + 200% base cost as modified by the<br />
slave’s skills (200 gp) for a trained slave). He then<br />
purchased an untrained and unskilled ogre with three<br />
levels in the barbarian class for 546 gp (350 gp base cost<br />
+ 25 percent (87 gp) for the second character level + 25<br />
percent (109 gp) for the third character level). Finally,<br />
he purchased a female drow up for auction who had<br />
ranks in Profession (courtesan), four levels of rogue,<br />
and had been trained for a hefty price of 3,291 gp (500<br />
gp base cost + 50% base (250 gp) for a skilled drow +<br />
cost for a skilled drow slave with four character levels<br />
(713 gp) + 125% (1828 gp) for training). Pleased with<br />
his purchases, Gatharis left the bazaar.
