When a spellcaster creates an acid wave, he sprays a huge<br />

volume of acid from his mouth, proceeding outward from<br />

himself in a cone. This cone deals 1d6 points of acid<br />

damage per level of the caster (maximum 15d6) to every<br />

creature within the area.<br />

<strong>The</strong> acid wave can destroy and consume inanimate objects<br />

in its path as well. If the damage caused to an interposing<br />

barrier destroys or melts the barrier, the acid wave may<br />

continue beyond the barrier if the area permits; otherwise it<br />

stops at the barrier just as any other spell effect does.<br />

Material Component: A tiny drop of acid the spellcaster<br />

must place on his tongue before vomiting forth the acid<br />

wave. This drop of acid causes 1 hit point of damage to<br />

the caster.<br />

Spell Resistance: No<br />

This spell is used by the drow for equal parts engineering<br />

and defense. It creates a modified wall of force that adheres<br />

to a solid surface (for example, the roof of a cave). Unlike<br />

wall of force, however, buttress conforms to the contours of<br />

any surface it is cast on.<br />

As an engineering tool, buttress is primarily used to support<br />

unstable roofs and walls in the caverns where the drow<br />

make their homes, preventing a partial or total collapse.<br />

<strong>The</strong> drow also use it, whenever possible, in an area where<br />

they are certain a battle is soon to take place, freeing them<br />

to use their most destructive spells without worrying about<br />

half the Underdeep collapsing on their heads from a cave-in.<br />

As a defensive measure, buttress is applied to all ceilings,<br />

walls and floors in major drow cities. <strong>The</strong> Underdeep is<br />

home to many creatures that can dig easily through solid<br />

rock, bypassing all fortifications. <strong>The</strong> buttress forms a<br />

barrier against these creatures.<br />

Buttress can be made permanent with a permanency spell,<br />

which is, indeed, it most common use.<br />

Compression is just what it sounds like, a crushing attack.<br />

<strong>The</strong> air about the target becomes as hard as steel and closes<br />

in around the victim, constricting him and holding him fast.<br />

A successful Reflex saving throw allows the victim to slip<br />

out of the trap before he is caught.<br />

<strong>The</strong> air changes from transparent to misty, and it is possible<br />

to carve the victim out of the field. <strong>The</strong> mist has a hardness<br />

of 10 and 60 hit points.<br />

<strong>The</strong> compression spell inflicts 1d10 points of damage<br />

per round, and makes spells with somatic components<br />

impossible to cast. This cocoon of hardened air is not<br />

airtight, and any creature capable of assuming gaseous<br />

form or shrinking to tiny size can escape it.<br />

Material Component: A sealed tube, which is smashed<br />

when the spell is cast.<br />
