sigh, turn and drift in the other direction, as though some<br />

great beast was breathing in and out.<br />

By now, hopes of ever returning to the surface had begun to<br />

seem like a fool’s dream and faith in the Allfather, so strong<br />

among the Pol’Tah only a few years earlier, had begun to<br />

fray under the constant trials and troubles afflicting the<br />

Pol’Tah. By the thinnest of margins, the Pol’Tah chose<br />

to remain here in these caverns, rather than brave their<br />

way past the shangu and thousands of other dangers in yet<br />

another fruitless drive towards the surface. <strong>The</strong> strange,<br />

breath-like pulse of the air led them to name the area Drez<br />

Khelim, or Earth Heart.<br />

<strong>Of</strong> course, it was not the drow’s depth beneath the earth<br />

that caused the voices of the Allfather and other elven gods<br />

to grow faint to their ears then vanish entirely. Rather,<br />

it was the drow’s unwitting descent into evil that caused<br />

their old gods to turn away, and other beings to take notice.<br />

Though all but forgotten by the other drow, the Pol’Tah<br />

had not been forgotten at all by the new gods of the drow.<br />

As the last of the Pol’Tah faithful offered up prayers to the<br />

Allfather, Kez’Skul the Trickster responded in the aspect<br />

of a bright flame that spread life-giving warmth and light
