OF SLUDGES


BELLMER KUFFERATH Machinery develops <strong>and</strong> sells plant <strong>and</strong> equipment <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>dewatering</strong>, <strong>thickening</strong> <strong>and</strong><br />

sorting <strong>of</strong> solids. The different AKUPRESS® product lines, part <strong>of</strong> which are patented, have made BELLMER<br />

KUFFERATH Machinery a leading manufacturer <strong>of</strong> screw presses suitable <strong>for</strong> <strong>dewatering</strong> structured, fi brous<br />

materials <strong>and</strong> <strong>sludges</strong>.<br />

DEWATERING AND THICKENING OF SLUDGES<br />

Fur<strong>the</strong>r development <strong>and</strong> downstream<br />

<strong>dewatering</strong> <strong>of</strong> slugdes represent a<br />

fundamental process both from an<br />

economical <strong>and</strong> ecological viewpoint,<br />

especially even in <strong>the</strong> pulp <strong>and</strong> paper<br />

industry dealing with large quantities <strong>of</strong><br />

sludge.<br />

The principal objectives <strong>of</strong> downstream<br />

sludge <strong>dewatering</strong> may be:<br />

- Reduction <strong>of</strong> volume <strong>and</strong> weight to<br />

minimize transport <strong>and</strong> l<strong>and</strong>fill<br />

charges<br />

- Highest possible dry content <strong>and</strong><br />

thus higher upper heating value to<br />

achieve constant <strong>and</strong> ecological<br />

incineration<br />

With <strong>the</strong> AKUPRESS® BX-H <strong>and</strong> BX-M<br />

screw press lines BELLMER KUFFERATH<br />

Machinery <strong>of</strong>fers a range <strong>of</strong> products<br />

able to dewater structured <strong>sludges</strong>, i.e.<br />

<strong>sludges</strong> with sufficient shear resistance,<br />

to optimum dry contents.<br />

For low inlet consistencies <strong>the</strong> AKSE® S<br />

disc thickener is used as pre-<strong>thickening</strong><br />

unit.<br />

AKUPRESS® BX-M/BX-H SCREW PRESSES<br />

AKUPRESS® BX-H <strong>and</strong> BX-M screw presses<br />

dewater structured <strong>sludges</strong> from a dry<br />

content <strong>of</strong> 6-16% to 40-70% <strong>and</strong> meet<br />

<strong>the</strong> requirements on sludge <strong>dewatering</strong><br />

at best.<br />

AKSE® S DISC THICKENER<br />

AKSE® S disc thickeners dewater <strong>sludges</strong><br />

from a dry content <strong>of</strong> 0.5-6% to 8-16%.<br />

AKSE® S can be used as individual units<br />

or particularly as pre-thickener, e.g.<br />

upstream <strong>of</strong> screw presses. In this case<br />

<strong>the</strong>y assure both <strong>the</strong> operation <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

economic efficiency <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> screw press at<br />

low solids contents in <strong>the</strong> inlet.<br />

FLOCCULATION, FLOCCULATION REACTOR<br />

Sludges are basically dewatered by adding<br />

AKUPRESS® BX-H<br />

AKUPRESS® BX-H is a screw press designed to dewater <strong>sludges</strong> to dry contentsbetween<br />

50-70%. Both design <strong>and</strong> function are based upon <strong>the</strong> patented <strong>and</strong><br />

well-tried concept <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> AKUPRESS® X line.<br />

The essential distinguishing characteristic about this press type is fact that <strong>the</strong> length<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> pressing zone can be adapted to <strong>the</strong> properties <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> sludge to be dewatered.<br />

The throttling action takes place at <strong>the</strong> press outlet between <strong>the</strong> spiral-free area <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> screw <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> screen basket.<br />

The torque <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> screw is controlled <strong>and</strong> adapted by changing <strong>the</strong> pressing zone<br />

length during operation.<br />

On <strong>the</strong> one h<strong>and</strong>, this conceptual design allows to reach extremely highest torques<br />

<strong>and</strong> thus also high dry contents. On <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r h<strong>and</strong>, <strong>the</strong> torque can be controlled,<br />

with <strong>the</strong> dry content being set in a narrow defined range.<br />

AKUPRESS® BX-M<br />

While <strong>the</strong> conceptual design draws upon <strong>the</strong> AKUPRESS BX-H line in many parts,<br />

<strong>the</strong> torque has espacially been adapted to <strong>the</strong> minor dem<strong>and</strong>s in terms <strong>of</strong> dryness,<br />

resulting hence in a low-cost solution. The patented torque control system has been<br />

adapted from <strong>the</strong> AKUPRESS BX-H.<br />

Both AKUPRESS® BX-H <strong>and</strong> BX-M are <strong>of</strong>fered each in five sizes with screw diameters<br />

ranging from 250 to 1,400 mm. They are available as short or long version in order<br />

to cope with <strong>the</strong> entire spectrum <strong>of</strong> <strong>dewatering</strong> <strong>and</strong> dry contents at <strong>the</strong> press inlet.<br />

Both AKUPRESS® BX-H <strong>and</strong> BX-M st<strong>and</strong> out due to <strong>the</strong>ir simple maintenance requirements,<br />

e.g. thanks to <strong>the</strong>ir proven <strong>and</strong> tested interchangeable screen basket system<br />

or <strong>the</strong> flange journals, <strong>the</strong> screw shaft can easily be changed without opening <strong>the</strong><br />

bearings.


SLUDGE DEWATERING SYSTEMS<br />

In addition to <strong>the</strong> optimised individual components we are able to supply a<br />

comprehensive range <strong>of</strong> machinery <strong>and</strong> equipment that includes complete turnkey<br />

<strong>systems</strong> toge<strong>the</strong>r with all relevant process control technology, conveying <strong>systems</strong><br />

<strong>and</strong> catwalks.<br />

The process control technology can ei<strong>the</strong>r be supplied with an own visualisation<br />

<strong>and</strong> operation surface (WinCC) or ra<strong>the</strong>r be linked with central process control<br />

<strong>systems</strong> via bus lines.<br />

The st<strong>and</strong>ard conveying <strong>systems</strong> used are spiral-free screw conveyors with <strong>the</strong><br />

following benefits:<br />

- Closed construction, absolutely free from dirt<br />

- Even great lengths without additional bearings<br />

- Vertical conveying possible<br />

Apart from <strong>the</strong> supply <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se <strong>systems</strong> special engineering services, including<br />

sludge analyses, pilot plant trials, installation plans,flow <strong>and</strong> control schemes<br />

<strong>and</strong> a complete technical documentation, are provided.<br />

FR FLOCCULATION REACTOR<br />

The FR flocculation reactor is a recipient with flow direction from bottom<br />

to top that is equipped with a specially designed agitator.<br />

Its essential features are:<br />

- High turbulence at <strong>the</strong> point where <strong>the</strong> flocculant is added, <strong>the</strong>n<br />

decreasing turbulence <strong>and</strong> <strong>for</strong>mation <strong>of</strong> flocks<br />

- Open top to examine <strong>and</strong> optimise <strong>the</strong> flocks<br />

- Homogeneous distribution on sundry processes<br />

The flocculation reactor is available in five sizes ranging from 10 to 400 m 3 /h.<br />

AKSE® S<br />

CONSTRUCTION AND FUNCTION<br />

The sludge to be thickened is directed into <strong>the</strong> gap <strong>for</strong>med by two mesh<br />

covered discs. These two discs <strong>for</strong>m a pair <strong>and</strong> are fixed on a central shaft<br />

rotating concentrically in a vat. The sludge drains through <strong>the</strong> mesh <strong>and</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> thickened material is conveyed by <strong>the</strong> rotation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> discs to <strong>the</strong> side<br />

opposite <strong>the</strong> inlet, here <strong>the</strong> thickened stock is thrown out <strong>and</strong> removed via<br />

a discharge chute.<br />

AKSE® S can be supplied with discs <strong>of</strong> 1.75 m or 3.00 m diameter, with <strong>the</strong><br />

shaft allowing to carry up to 10 pairs <strong>of</strong> discs per unit. Small units having a<br />

filter surface <strong>of</strong> 4 m 2 <strong>and</strong> also large-scale thickeners <strong>of</strong> 220 m 2 filter surface<br />

are based upon <strong>the</strong> same operating principle.<br />
