Population Projections
A population projection for a stable age
distribution of the one horned rhinoceros
in captivity in Indian zoos was generated
using PM2000. It was assumed that for
ensuring a genetically viable and
demographically stable population an
increase in the population from the
current 47 specimens to 100 over the
next 10 years would be required. For a
stable population a steady decline is
observed in figure 6 while the actual population shows an exponential increase over
the next 10 years and then stabilizes at 100 individuals for the next 40 years. Details
of the number of individuals required for a stable population are presented in table
13. The first row # Born – represents the number of births required each year to
achieve a stable population.
