Life tables
The life table of male and female one horned rhinoceros in captivity in India are
presented in table 11. The mortality rate (Qx) for males and females peak in the first
year of life. Additional peaks are observed once again in the 21 st , 29 th and 33 rd years
in males and 21 st , 27 th , 33 rd , 34 th , 36 th and 40 th year in females. Fecundity (Mx) in
males peaks in the 10 th year and in females in the 11 th , 14 th and 17 th year of life.
Special care must be taken in young calves to reduce the mortality rates in the 1 st
year of life. For breeding purposes attempts must be made to use the peak
reproductive time in the lifespan of the captive individuals.
