Census<br />
The current captive<br />
population of one <strong>horned</strong><br />
rhinos in <strong>Indian</strong> zoos dates<br />
back to 1944 when the first<br />
specimen, a female was<br />
brought into captivity. The<br />
first male entered the captive<br />
population in 1952 and the<br />
first captive birth was<br />
recorded in 1960, by 1969<br />
there were 24 animals in<br />

In 1979 the total population had risen to 42<br />
individuals of which 13 were born in<br />
captivity. The present population of rhinos is<br />
33 in <strong>Indian</strong> zoos and a total of 47 out of<br />
which 14 specimens were lost to follow up<br />
due to their transfer outside the country.<br />
