Rustic Knotty Alder is the natural choice when you’re 

looking for a door with a relaxed, yet distinctive appearance. The 

open, solid knots found in knotty alder vary in size, shape and color, 

giving each piece its own individual pattern. 

Select Knotty Alder is a medium density hardwood with 

an even grain appearance. Its natural consistency and beautiful 

color give it the appeal of cherry, maple or birch. Can be finished to 

resemble more expensive fine-grained species. 

Fir has a straight grain and fine texture which allows for a reflective 

smoothness that retains its light color overtime. One of the most 

distinctive-looking woods, providing a rich visual quality and clean 

look. One of the most versatile softwood species on the market today. 

Cherry is valued for its rich, deep reddish brown color and 

exceptional character. Its interesting grain and smooth texture give it 

extraordinary finishing qualities. 

Meranti is a tropical hardwood with ribbon striped interlocking 

grain and coarse texture. Popular among architects and designers 

because of its high luster and good machining properties. 

Maple is a light, bright, attractive and classic hardwood that 

accentuates the light of any room, both brightening the room while 

making it appear more expansive. Its uniform color and fine grain 

make it highly favored for furniture, cabinet and millwork applications. 

Clear Pine is a soft wood that is usually light colored with 

pink-brown variations offering an ideal surface for stained or painted 

finishes. The vertical grain cut provides a uniform, yet elegant look to 

the door. 

Knotty Pine has a pale brown hue with occasional reddishbrown 

streaks. It has knots that vary in size from large to small. Knots 

tend to be relatively tight and smooth with cracks. Extensively used 

in timber-frame and log homes but is increasingly popular in modern 

style homes.

When our installation, care and maintenance instructions are followed, you will have many years 

of enjoyment. Please note the following for your Limited Warranty.

Storage and Handling 

• Handle doors carefully with clean hands and equipment. Do not drag doors across one another. 

• Doors should be covered and stored flat on a level surface, elevated from concrete floors, in a dry, well 

ventilated area. 

• Doors should not be subjected to abnormal or excessive changes in temperature or humidity. Do not expose 

doors to excessive heat (90 degrees F), dryness (30% RH), moisture (55% RH) or direct sunlight. 

• Doors must be allowed time to acclimate to the average existing conditions of the area prior to installation. 

• If unfinished and doors are to be stored for more than 5 days, the entire door, including all edges and bored 

holes, should be sealed to prevent moisture absorption. 

• Periodically inspect doors for wear. If doors show any signs of wear, restore according to the finish 

manufacturer’s recommendation. 

1. PREPARING THE ROUGH OPENING Are the walls straight? Are the uprights level? Is the subfloor 

clean, dry, level and solid? If you are using a height plate to bring the sill up to the level of the finished floor 

covering, be sure that it is at least as wide and long as the sill. 

2. PRE-CAULKING SUBFLOOR FOR SILL Put three heavy beads (1/2”) of non-hardening caulk on the 

subfloor or height plate. Put enough caulk at the sides to completely cover the bottom of the side jamb. Rock 

door unit directly into position. 

3. POSITION UNIT IN ROUGH OPENING Put fasteners in jambs just above the hinge positions on the hinge 

jamb. Leave fasteners sticking out a little. Assure the back side of brickmould is up against exterior sheeting. 

4. SHIM AND SECURE HINGE JAMB On hinge jamb only: Place one shim behind each hinge between the 

hinge jamb and the wall stud. Check hinge jamb for plumb and true with a 6-foot level. Drive fastener through 

each shim and remove excess shim. 

5. ENSURE CONSISTENT MARGINS Shim between the strike side jamb and wall stud near the top and 

bottom of the jamb, across from the top and bottom hinge locations. Adjust the frame so it is flush with the face 

of the door. Check the weather-strip margins and contact for good compression all around the door. Drive 

fasteners through jambs at locations of top and bottom shims and remove excess shims. 

6. APPLYING HINGE AND LOCKSET HARDWARE Remove the top screw from the jamb side of each hinge 

and replace with a #10 x 2-1/2” screw (single doors only, one screw per hinge). These screws will run through 

the hinge jamb and into the wall stud, preventing door sag. Install lockset hardware. With door closed, shim 

behind latch area. Properly shim so the slab is hung square in the frame with proper equal margins. Attach the 

strike plate with two #10 x 2-1/2” screws through the shim and into the wall stud. 

Single door units and door units with sidelites: Shim close to the mullions on the door side. Fasten through the 

thin part of the header, through the shim, into the overhead stud. Remove excess shim. 

7. ADJUST SILL AND CHECK CORNER PADS Adjust either the sill cap or the door sweep as applicable to 

ensure proper contact between sweep and cap. Verify proper installation of corner pads. The thick front end 

of the corner pad needs to be up under the weatherstrip. The corner pad should also contact the top surface of 

the sill cap. 

8. CAULK SILL Caulk should be applied to the intersection of the aluminum sill extrusion and the jamb. 

Seal front bottom edge of sill. Check on the outside and sides of the door. There should be caulk along the 

joint between the door and the sweep. 

9. WEATHERPROOF Caulk around the entire unit on weather-exposed side between brickmould and siding 

or sheathing. Caulk at joint of brickmould and jamb. Install sheet metal flashing, DuPont FlexWrap NF, or 

equivalent moisture barrier above the brickmould on the exterior of the house.

FINISHING 

Basic Stain and Clear Finish Steps 

1. Sand lightly and thoroughly clean to keep dust and debris-free. 

2. Seal and condition using wood sealer and conditioner. 

3. Apply wood stain for desired color, allow to dry and apply an additional coat of wood sealer. 

4. Sand again lightly and clean, to keep dust and debris-free. 

5. Apply two coats of top coat. 

Paint Finish 

Use a quality solvent-based primer, followed by three coats of quality water-based or oil-based paint 

recommended by the paint manufacturer to be compatible with the primer. When finishing glazed doors 

(doors with glass) apply top coats generously to bridge wood and glass. To protect against moisture, lap 

paint onto glass 1/16 of an inch. Find a well-lit painting location that is dust free, well ventilated and 

within the climate conditions recommended by the paint coat manufacturer. Avoid dark colored paint 

if the door is exposed to direct sunlight to reduce the chance of warping, veneer cracking or fading. 

Painting Technique 

Remember to use clean brushes and work in a well lit, dust-free area. 

IMPORTANT: 

1. All six sides must be sealed within 48 hours of purchasing and prior to finishing. 

2. Follow coating manufacturer’s instructions. 

MAINTAINING YOUR STILE AND RAIL DOOR 

While your stile and rail wood door has been constructed for a long, trouble-free life, periodic 

maintenance is required to keep it looking its best and to maintain your warranty. This maintenance may 

include, but is not limited to, upkeep on the exterior finish of the wood, trimming any swelling of wood 

products, as well as oiling and polishing the hardware. The amount of required maintenance depends 

on environmental conditions and degree of exposure to the environment. You can limit the amount of 

exposure to the environment by providing the required overhang for your area and door location. 

To determine if your door has adequate overhang, measure from the bottom of the door to the 

ceiling and divide that distance by two. The resulting number will be the 

minimum allowable overhang. If you have a western or southern 

exposure, you may still receive direct sunlight on the door and a larger 

overhang will be required. 

The following diagram shows how to determine the proper overhang 

for your door. 

Finish Maintenance 

Periodic maintenance of the finish, including waxing with a high quality 

furniture wax, prolongs the beauty and life of your door. Regularly 

inspect your door for signs that it needs maintenance: 

• Hairline cracks in the top of the finish 

• Changes in the color of the finish 

• Changes in the texture of the finish, such as flaking or scaling 

• Dullness or chalking in the finish

Warranty 

OrePac warrants that each door purchased from the original dealer is of good material and workmanship and 

shall be free of defects which render such door(s) unserviceable or unfit for ordinary recommended use. 

ONE YEAR EXTERIOR DOOR WARRANTY 

Doors used in an exterior application (with controlled climate conditions on one side) shall carry a one year limited 

warranty from the date of purchase from the dealer. This warranty applies only to doors that have been properly 

finished, sealed and hung in a location protected from direct exposure to sun and rain, under normal conditions. 

See specific “Storage & Handling” and “Maintaining your Stile and Rail Door” documents. 

FIVE YEAR INTERIOR DOOR WARRANTY 

Doors used in an interior application (with controlled climate conditions on both sides) shall carry a five year 

limited warranty from the date of purchase from the dealer. This warranty applies only to doors that have been 

properly finished, sealed and hung. The five year warranty applies only to the original home owner and is not 

transferable. 

Characteristics Excluded from Warranties: 

The following are not defects in the workmanship or material and are not covered by this written warranty: 

1. Damage caused by failure to comply with the Storage & Handling instructions, as well as the Maintaining 

your Stile and Rail Door instructions. 

2. Warp of less then or equal to¼” in the plane of any door 3’ x 7’ or smaller. 

3. Exterior doors over 7’ tall that are not installed with a three point lock system. 

4. Defect caused by a warped or bowed jamb/frame unit, or improper installation. 

5. Natural variations in the color or texture of the wood. 

6. Failure to properly seal the door. All six sides must be sealed within 48 hours of purchasing and prior to 

finishing. 

7. Panel misalignment or shrinkage. 

8. Rail expansion due to climate conditions. 

9. Damage caused by extreme temperature build-up where a storm door is utilized. 

10. Failure to perform normal home owner’s maintenance, including maintaining the finish. 

11. The performance or appearance of finishes applied. 

Limitation of Liability 

The liability of OrePac is expressly limited to the replacement or repair of the door or a refund, in full, of the 

original purchase price. OrePac shall not be liable for any special, consequential indirect or incidental damages 

based upon breach of express or implied warranty, breach of contract, negligence, strict tort or any loss of profits, 

loss of savings or revenue, loss of use of the door or structure in which the door is installed, cost of any substitute 

doors, claims by third parties including subsequent purchasers of OrePac’s products and injury to property. 

This warranty gives you specific legal rights and you may have other rights which vary from state to state.
