Joe Suiter, winner of the 1990
NCHA Futurity on Millie
Montana, is the first rider in
today’s first bunch. Suiter rides
the Smart Little Pistol daughter
Boons Blue Lady for the Round
and D’Angelo Partnership.
Also on tap in the first bunch
is Russ Miller riding Busy BN
Smart for Linda Chambless. Miller
won the 1992 Futurity aboard
Dox Miss N Reno.
Look for Bill Freeman in the
third bunch. The three-time
Futurity champion rides Cats
Rhett, by High Brow Cat, for
Stacy and Jaime Smitherman.
Freeman’s Futurity wins came
aboard Smart Little Senor (1988),
Smart Little Lena (1982), and
Docs Diablo (in 1979).
The Rosston, Texas trainer is
cutting’s all-time leading money
earner; a top spot in this year’s
Futurity would push his earnings
over the $5 million mark.
Freeman’s closest rival for alltime
earnings is Greg Welch with
$3.6 million.
Tommy Marvin, who scored
220 points atop Catsa Movin on
Wednesday, to tie with Ronnie
Rice, Paul Hansma and Kobie
Wood for second, thus far, rides
Smarter Than Pepto in the third

for Gail Holmes. Daughn, ranked as
cutting’s No. 5 all-time leading money
earner with $2.8 million, scored 219
points earlier in the week aboard Fancy
Blue Moon for Vicki Bass of Fort Worth.
Last year, Daughn shattered a Futurity
record scoring 229 points on Royal
Fletch.
CD Olena, with 60 entries in this
year’s event, is the sire of MK Kittylena,
performing in the fifth bunch. Owned
by Bar H Ranche, MK Kittylena is
ridden by Winston Hansma, who took
the 1994 Futurity championship on CD
Olena for Bar H Ranche. �

Hansma, Haidas CD
riding high
Paul Hansma parlayed a sticky
situation into a sweet deal earlier
this week with Haidas CD, owned
by Coleman Cattle Company. Hansma
was unable to cut the first cow that
he picked, so he cut for shape. But his
next cut didn’t pan out the way he had
hoped, either.

up and realized I didn’t have much
time,” said Hansma. “I turned around
and saw this Hereford. I thought it was
a different one, and it was (really) one
of the Herefords I didn’t care for. But I
had to come with it and cut. I worked
two cows to the buzzer and it worked
out pretty good.”
Haidas CD scored 220 points to put
him in a four-way tie for second place
in first go-round standings.
A gelded son of CD Olena, Haidas
CD is out of Haida Ho, by Haidas Little
Pep. “We gelded him a few months
after we bought him,” said Hansma. “It
wasn’t that big of a decision to make.
We didn’t pay a lot of money for him
and he isn’t outstandingly bred. But
he’s always tried. He’s a decent little
horse.”
Bowmans Fancy Mate
Steve Oehlhof turned in a
219.5-point performance on Bowmans
Fancy Mate, good for thirdplace
ranking through Thursday. The
Smart Mate daughter, out of Bowmans
Fancy Jewel, is owned by Gary and
Shannon Barker of Madill, Oklahoma.
“You never know how they’re going
to be when you drop your hand, but
luckily she just turned it up a notch,”
said Oehlhof, who had been disappointed
with his ride aboard Young
Rey Gun on Wednesday.
“The stud is phenomenal,” Oehlhof
added. “He’s the one I thought I was
going to do something on, but he was
just too fresh.”
Oehlhof purchased Bowmans Fancy
Mate last August from her breeder,
Roland Bowman because he thought
she would be a good non-pro mount for
Gary Barker. “I wasn’t even planning
on riding her,” Oehlhof explained.
“Then she just really started coming,
and just kept on getting better and
better. She’s so smart about a cow and
her stop is unbelieveable.”
Oehlhof lives in Ringling, Oklahoma
where he works for veteran
trainer Bill Riddle. “Bill’s taught me
everything I know,” said Oehlhof. “I
owe him everything.”
Bowmans Fancy Mate is out of
a full sister to Bowmans Fancy, by
Lenas Jewel Bars. “Everyone says that
(Bowmans Fancy Mate) reminds them
of Bowmans Fancy,” said Oehlhof.
Bowmans Fancy, owned by GCH
Land & Cattle Company, earned over
$285,000 and has produced earners
of nearly $300,000. Next week, she
should again make headlines, when
she goes under the gavel at Western
Bloodstock’s Preferred Breeders Sale.
