BILATERAL 6 | YATRA | JANUARY - FEBRUARY 2011 HC’S VISIT TO PRAVASI BHAWAN High Commissioner, during his recent visit to India to attend Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD) 2011, visited Pravasi Bhawan set up by the Antar Rashtriya Sahyog Parishad (ARSP). He was warmly welcomed by Shri Shashank, former Foreign Secretary and President of ARSP, Shri J.S. Sapra, former High Commissioner to T&T and Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of ARSP and several other members. High Commissioner spoke on a range of topics viz. politics, economic, culture and Diaspora. He also talked about India-T&T bilateral relations and some recent events organized by the High Commission in Trinidad and Tobago which have made a significant contribution to the growth in bilateral relations. ❖ The room in Birla House where Mahatma Gandhi spent the last 5 months of his life During his recent visit to Delhi, High Commissioner visited Gandhi Smriti which is housed in Birla House, the landmark building where Mahatma Gandhi spent the last 5 months of his life until his martyrdom on 30 January 1948. He was warmly welcomed by Mrs. Tara Gandhi Bhattacharjee, Vice Chairperson of Gandhi Smriti and High Commissioner flanked by Shri Shashank, former Foreign Secretary and President of ARSP and Shri J.S. In response to the High Commission’s request for supply of books and artefacts on Mahatma’s life, Gandhi Smriti gave a positive reply. They also proposed that the multimedia exhibition on Mahatma Gandhi put up at Gandhi Smriti commissioned by the Aditya Birla Group could be Some previous issues of Yatra-The Journey High Commissioner speaking to Sangeeta Dash, Curator of the Exhibition made available to the High Commission in its mobile version. Mahatma Gandhi spent 144 days of his life as a guest of his ardent follower and the great industrialist Shri G D Birla in his house at Albuquerque Road, now known as Tees January Marg. The old Birla House now houses Gandhi Smriti in the honour of the site of Martyrdom of Mahatma Gandhi. After the political independence of India on 15 August 1947 from foreign rule, Mahatma Gandhi was committed towards the true liberation of the people of the country. India needed a social system without exploitation of man and nature. On 30 January 1948 in the prayer ground here, the assassin’s bullets ended the physical existence of this man and made him immortal. Representing truth, compassion and non-violence, Mahatma Gandhi belongs to the entire humanity. Millions of people and the world citizens visit Gandhi Smriti for spiritual inspiration, and in search of their own life’s mission. Homage to the philosophy of Mahatma Gandhi is homage to the greatest spiritual and creative flows of man and nature of the past and the present that have kept the spark of eternal love glowing in each one of us. EVENTS ORGANIZED BY MGICC CULTURE The MGICC in collaboration with the Hindu Prachar Kendra, organized a 4-day workshop from 1-4 December 2010 on “Dandiya” – folk dance and music of Gujarat. It was a pilot project of the Hindu Prachar Kendra aimed at attracting the teenagers towards Indian culture and its rich heritage, held at the Kendra premises at Raghunanan Road, Chaguanas. The MGICC and Hindu Prachar Kendra students trained by Smt. Srimathi Madkholkar, Bharatnatyam Dance Teacher cum – performer of MGICC, gave a lively performance of Dandiya on 06 December at the concluding ceremony of the Yuva Sanskar Varg workshop organized for the teenagers. Bhardwaj, & at right Mrs. Sunita Pahuja, Second Secretaries in the Mission) Foreign Minister Dr. Suruj Rambachan delivering his address at the Republic Day Reception In commemoration of the 61st anniversary of India’s Republic Day, the High Commission of India and the MGICC held an Indian Art Exhibition depicting Madhubani Paintings by visiting National award winning Madhubani Painter Bharati Dayal and Tribal Art by Mrs. Gargi Kaul Mishra. The Exhibition was inaugurated by Hon. Nela Khan, Parliamentary Secretary, Ministry of the Arts and Multiculturalism on Monday, 17 January at Soft Box Studios Gallery, Port of Spain.
