LCDs for the Industry or industrial LCDs
More and more suppliers advertise their ability to supply the
same panels long term, to ensure they can be designed into
industrial applications. Even suppliers that as recently as one
year ago only supplied the industrial market with products
from their over production, now offer displays targeted at the
industrial market with an availability of three or four years,
ensuring they are useable for industrial applications.
The main reason for this ”change of mindset” of some of the
major consumer TFT display manufacturers will probably
never be known exactly. One very important aspect for sure is
the extreme cost pressure in the consumer market; another
one can be attributed to low volumes in TV applications where
the volumes are far behind expectations. Probably one point
should be considered as well: the very clear negative feedback
of many large customers in the industrial arena about
the extreme and fast change in display product availability and
product changes; this might have led to a change of thinking in
the head offices as well.
In spite of this, users should be very careful in selecting the
right supplier. Experience shows that suppliers that change
the markets they address very quickly and suddenly start supplying
products for the industrial market, are also normally
the first ones to change their position again if another lucrative
market opens up.
But long-term availability of a monitor display on its own,
together with some displays that are available for a couple of
years longer, do not totally define the concept for the industrial
market segment yet. One main aspect will be to define and
build up a basis of trust between supplier and customer in
conjunction with the quality level required, and keep promises
about data and product availibility. Reliable delivery schedules
and a reliable procedure for announcing any product changes
with sufficient lead time or for last time buy have to be followed.
Additional features like
■ High brightness
■ High contrast
■ Wide viewing angle
■ Compact design
■ Mechanical robustness and
■ Wide temperature range
are very important in displays designed for industrial
applications.
Of course not all small industrial Systems require these more
demanding features. Other requirements might come into
play, such as very low power consumption for handheld applications.
Sometimes even a narrow viewing angle might be
preferred, to prevent a second person reading the display, for
example.
We as the MSC Vertriebs GmbH and Gleichmann Electronics
GmbH group of companies have selected a number of display
manufacturers which will cover the requirements of industial
displays users. Our goal is not only to supply products defined
by type numbers, but to offer additional support helping you
choose the product which best fits your requirements. This
could for example include points like available input signals,
adapting this signal to a specific display, mechanical definitions,
custom changes and many additional requirements that
could be necessary for individual designs.
Our wide range of experience in supporting many display
customers, together with a very close contact to our suppliers
for many years enables us to add to your know-how. We are
notified early in the process, when our suppliers change products,
or the end of a product lifetime is close. We will keep you
informed about these product changes and help you to find
alternative solutions where necessary.
This display brochure ”Field of Vision” has been put together
by our Display Team with great care. Hopefully it will help
you solve any questions you may have with your application.
In this brochure there is only space to show a selection of the
wide range of TFT display panels using different technologies
available from our range of suppliers. We can help with your
system design, suggesting suitable display drivers, controller
cards and different types of touchscreen systems as appropriate.
We know very well that this brochure is only a starting point.
You will need more detailed product specifications and you
will have additional questions about the best solution for your
display requirements. Our technical team have been trained
by our suppliers and have all of the details ready that you
need. Please contact us - we look forward to your call – either
via your local sales contact or directly.
We will do our best to make your application a success.
MVA (Multi-Domains Vertical Alignment)
Multi-Domains are areas in a colour cell, formed
by the use of protrusions. Vertical Alignment is a
term which is somewhat misleading because the LC
molecules (in their static state) are not completely
vertically aligned due to the protrusions. When an
electrical fi eld is created by applying a voltage, the
crystals are horizontally aligned and the back light
can then pass through the various layers,
resulting in:
■ Viewing angles up to 160 degrees (vertical / horizontal)
■ Fast response time
■ High contrast ratio
SFT (Super Fine TFT)
or Inplane Switching Technology (IPS). Because of
electrode confi guration at one level the liquid crystals
align parallel to the glass plate of the cell.
Resulting in:
■ Extremely wide viewing angle (about 160° vertical/horizontal)
■ No change of colours from different
viewing angles
■ Brilliant image display from all sides
DCU-Lx
Display Control Units or graphics terminal controllers are
suitable for flat panels without integrated graphics controller
chips. The DCU-Lx supports STN/TFT display resolutions up
to 800x600 dots. It operates either in terminal mode (ESC sequence)
or in the more usable compiler mode (DAISY). There
are seven different text fonts with sizes of 6x5 up to 60x24 dots
as well as highly sophisticated drawing functions like cursor,
text, line, rectangle, circle and polygon. These functions can
be called with simple commands (ESC sequence) via RS 232
Port. The most powerful performance of the DCU-Lx is only
available in compiler mode. The complete application can be
designed on a PC with the PC development tool “DAISY”. The
resulting file is downloaded into flash memory on the DCU-Lx
and the functions can then be executed locally with a fast
response time. Next to the possibility to drive the display inverter
it is also possible to create the specific contrast voltage
for the LCD you want to connect.
NetDCUx
These Single Board Computers have extensive on board
peripherals, like LCD Interface or Interfaces for PS/2 Mouse
and Keyboard, Mini Keyboard, Touch Screen, 2(4) RS232 and
10/100Mbit Ethernet. Furthermore NetDCUs are equipped
with slots for additional memories (CF-SD). For ease of
development of a MSR system you have 21 digital/analog
I/Os available. The „flagships“ are the NetDCU4/5.2 based
on the Intel© Xscale or the AMD-Alchemy processor line.
These boards support multimedia applications due to the
implemented AC97 audio codec and the USB 1.1 interface.
The pc-card slot allows customised system expansion. As a
consequence complex applications can be implemented as an
single-board-solution. 1 ch LVDS panels may be adapted by an
adaptor board with common pinout to the graphic interface.
The NetDCU6 with onboard CAN-Master provides maximum
network flexibility. The NetDCU8 is the best choice, you want
to build up price sensitive simple systems but only requiring
lower performance hardware. The development has resulted
in an embedded PC board at a very cost effective price under
100€. NetDCUx supports the operating systems Windows
CE and Embedded Linux, which are already installed on
the internal flash. All device drivers for the peripherals are
implemented. There are starter kits of NetDCU components
available for quick and easy development.
The structure of a resistive
touch screen
Resistive touch screens
have a flexible top layer and
a rigid bottom layer separated
by insulating dots. The
inside surface of each layer
is coated with a transparent
conductive coating. When
the pressure of the touch
creates contact between the
opposing conductive layers,
the touch screen´s controller
pinpoints the position
of the touch and communicates
the coordinates back
to the host computer.
screen
A small amount of
of voltage is applied
to the four corners
of the touch screen
to generate an
electrostatic field
on the surface of
the sensor. When
a finger touches the screen, it draws a
minute amount of current to the point of
contact - a voltage drop. The x/y location
of the point of contact is calculated by
the controller and transmitted to the PC.
Dispersive Signal Technology (DST)
Products coming on-stream in 2005
Dispersive Signal Technology is a new touch technology that
recognises touch through vibrations made to the substrate.
This is quite unlike any existing technology, and allows touchscreens
to be more robust and also allows the effect of a hand
or drink resting on the surface of the screen to be ignored.
Crucially, DST also combines all the best attributes of the
established technology: exceptional light transmission, stylus
support, accuracy, signature capture and all-glass durability.
DST locates sensors in each
corner of the touchscreen, which
measure the vibrational energy.
Advanced dispersion adjustment
algorithms are then applied to the
data, allowing accurate reporting
of each touch.
This approach helps eliminate
issues with screen contaminants
and surface scratches, and also allows
a touch to be registered while
a palm and/or object is resting on
the screen’s surface. For example,
a finger, gloved hand or stylus can
initiate a touch while a person’s
palm and drink are on the surface.
The touch creates a vibration,
which radiates a bending wave
through the substrate from the
point of contact spreading out to
the edges – the resting items are
ignored as they do not generate
any vibrational energy.
DST delivers outstanding advantages
to the point of sale, gaming
and hospitality markets, by allowing
these kiosk-type terminals
to deliver a more compelling,
error-proof and damage resistant
solution.
Passive LC-Display Technologies
A liquid crystal cell typically consists of two glass sheets with
electrical conducting layers between which the liquid crystals
are stored. The applied voltage aligns the liquid crystals and
changes the direction of polarisation making the segments
visible.
For passive LC displays a variety of technologies are available.
They differ in viewing angle, colour, maximum multiplex rate
and temperature range.
The lowest-priced technology is TN which is used for segment
LCDs and alphanumeric modules. This technology suffers
from a very constricted viewing angle and a maximum multiplex
rate of 1:8.
Used mainly for alphanumeric modules and graphics modules,
the STN technology features higher multiplex rates
(>1:8) than TN and higher contrast ratio as well as a wider
viewing angle.
LCDs can be produced in positive and negative mode. In positive
mode the segment driven is darker than the background.
LCDs use ambient light and/or a backlight. In negative mode
the driven segment is brighter than the background. It is used
especially if a high contrast with backlight is required.
The following table shows the colours of the segments or dots
and the background colour of the LCD for possible modes:
Customer specific Segment LCDs,
Alphanumeric and Graphics Modules
The simplest LCD
displays are
segment LCDs,
which are usually
produced to
a custom specification.
To display
figures either 7 or 14
segments can be used.
Other information can
be displayed with special
segments – there
is virtually no limit to the
information which can be
displayed.
For greater information presentation flexibility alphanumeric
modules are used. Letters and pictures/pictograms are
displayed using a 5x7 dot matrix, which gives a very clear and
easily readable display. Because of more complex requirements,
modules use an integrated LCD controller.
In addition to many of the
standard modules, LCD
modules can also be
made to your custom
specification. This
might involve
slight changes
of the standard
circuit board
or changes to
the LCD. For
customer specific
projects
almost all of
the parameters
can be defined by
the customer.
