CENTER OF ANTIQUITY
In 17 BC, the Roman Emperor Augustus founded the city
„Augusta Treverorum“ on the banks of the Moselle River. This
makes Trier the oldest city in Germany. In the period of Late
Antiquity, the town saw a glamorous rise, becoming “Roma
Secunda” – the second Rome. Emperor Constantine, who
ascended the throne in 306 and went down in world history as
the fi rst Christian Emperor, resided in Trier. In the 4 th century
AD, Trier was one of the fi ve biggest cities in the known world
with a population of about 70,000.
Visiting the city, you will fi nd that history is present everywhere
in Trier. No other place in Germany makes Roman
times come to life with such authenticity. The Porta Nigra,
the amphitheater, the Imperial and the Barbara Thermal Baths
have been UNESCO world heritage sites since 1986. Displaying
a series of world-famous Roman treasures, the Rhineland State
Museum Trier is one of the most important archaeological
museums in Germany.

AntiquitiesCard TRIER
The buildings of the ancient Roman town and the archaeological
fi nds in the State Museum are conveniently combined in one
ticket: The AntiquitiesCard Basic entitles the holder to access
two Roman buildings and the State Museum, while holders of
the AntiquitiesCard Premium may visit four Roman Buildings,
the State Museum, the Roman Otrang Villa and the Kastel
Hermitage near Trier.
The AntiquitiesCards Basic and Premium are valid during the
calendar year of their purchase. Entry for up to four children
18 years of age or younger is included.
In addition, the AntiquitiesCard entitles to discount tickets at
the following cultural highlights: “In the realm of shadows”
(the unique spatial theatre in the State Museum), the Simeon
Monastery city museum, and the Trier Cathedral museum. The
Tourist Information Trier will grant holders of the Antiquities
Card a 10% discount on the Roman toga tours of Trier and on
the thrilling re-enactment tours in the Porta Nigra, the Imperial
Baths, the amphitheater and the Frankish Tower.

The Rhineland State Museum Trier is one of Germany’s most
important archaeological museums. It highlights the city’s
heyday era of power and glory – the times when Trier was
the administrative metropolis of the Roman province Gallia
Belgica and rose to become an Imperial Residence of the late
Roman Empire. Spectacular mosaic fl oors,
formidable sepulchral monuments and
many other treasures bear witness to
the glamour of the former Imperial
city. Also on display in the museum:

– from pre-historical times to the

Basic and Premium
The State Museum opens up a new dimension of living history
with fl oor-to-ceiling surround vision projections on largerthan-life
funerary monuments. The show takes the audience
on a 45-minute adventure in Roman Trier. Mercure, the God, is
travelling to the netherworld with grieving Albinius Asper, who
is looking for his deceased wife. Accompanied by the scheming
god, Asper meets some of the characters of Roman Trier: vain
matrons, enterprising wine merchants, ambitious hunters,
cheeky students and reckless charioteers. They live as shadows
in their own realm, awaiting the resolutions of the gods.
Meanwhile, Mercure has his own agenda: He wants Asper to
forget his wife. The voices of Christoph Maria Herbst and Peter
Striebeck give the central characters of Mercure and Albinius
Asper personality and charm.
Daily performances: 11.30 and 14.30 (except Mondays)

The spatial theatre is also available in English, French and Dutch language
